[TV] The What Anime Are You Watching Thread!

I watched a few episodes of Trigun last night. It's almost as goofy as Slayers.
And it stays that way for the most part. Then, it starts to get serious. And then it starts to get intriguing. And then it's over.

And then you watch Trigun: Badlands Rumble, feel better, then have a fridge logic moment when you realize that Trigun is Borderlands: the Anime.

The major difference in Trigun compared to Slayers is it doesn't have eighty billion reboots and sequels. I've lost track of how many different versions of Slayers there are now.

Straight up, its probably impossible to be an American completist of the series. Sooooooooooo many light novels. By the way, why does it seem like light novels don't get translated as much as manga?

I have the same problem with Code: Lyoko. I can watch the new live action/CGI series with subs, but I'm probably never going to read the (canon!) light novels that take place between the two shows unless I learn French or Italian because they were never translated.

I feel ya man, its kinda annoying that I'm probably have to learn a whole other language because the company that was doing the light novels(at least the first ones) went under years ago and noone has picked up the copyright.

ANOTHER THING- how dumb is it that none of the Jump All-star games can make it over here? I wanna pit Kamehameha against Star Platinum dangit!

Saw the first four eps of Kill La Kill, and its freaking awesome. Its really not surprising that its made by the guys who made Gurren Lagann(a show I need to finish), with its fast paced animation great character design.

Watched the first episode of Black Lagoon. Coincidentally, right after I saw it in this thread, my husband also commented on it as we were flipping through Hulu's anime selections. So I figured what the hell. OMG that was awesome. I think if I was twenty-something again I would totally cosplay Revy.

Black Lagoon is made of refined win and awesomesauce. And it gets better as the series progresses. Roberta, when you meet her, is perhaps amongst the best characters in it. But for being a series-long action movie with STRONG John Woo influences, it is phenomenal. I can't wait for the next installment...

I got a coupon from half-price books for my birthday. made a killer find tonight for 100 dollars.

Still loving Kill La Kill, and I want Harume Nui to DIE! She's a classic "love to hate" character, and I love hating her with the passion of 100 thousand exploding sons!

And I have finished Kill La Kill...I FUCKING LOVE THIS SHOW! 1. Rukyo is so bad ass you forget how revealing her costume is 2. Amazing character designs 3. Fantastic visuals yet disturbingly believable science fiction 4. Transformation sequences that I never get tired of even if they are a cheap excuse for not using new animatino 5. The over all message of this series that you wouldn't get unless you watched all of it which I won't spoil because I am imploring all of you TO WATCH IT! WATCH IT DAMN YOUSE!

That's quite the endorsement. Maybe I will.

It's seriously one of the most fun action shows I've seen since Gurren Lagann. It's over-the-top, it's hilarious, and the fights are almost always ridiculously cool to watch (there's a couple low-budget ones). The show didn't have a huge budget, so there's definitely some QUALITY moments, but it's definitely worth the watch.

It's going to make so much fucking money. Just... gobs of it.

Also, is anyone surprised that -LOKI- has become the stand-out villain of the Marvel Universe? It's not Red Skull... it's not the Mandarin... it's fucking LOKI.

Well, to be fair, he was the main villain of the Avengers movie.

We'll see what happens if they actually get around to Thanos at some point in this series.

If they hadn't been stupid and sold the rights to mutants to Fox, it would be Magento, without a doubt.

Alternatively, if they hadn't sold Spider-man, we'd be getting a Sinister Six Vs Avengers movie.

Yes. The IP Rights to Marvel properties is all kinds of fuckified, and it's a pity. And it comes out more and more like 8 year olds squalling "NO I'M TELLING THE STORY NO I AM"

It's especially funny to see them take this route with Avengers in an effort to make it a little more accessible to the younger Japanese audience. Because regular super heroes aren't enough, they have to be summoned by cards/watches/belts/etc.

It's not even that... they just want to make a toy they can sell. So now they can sell the tops AND the action figures.

Yeah, in the end it's definitely set up for merchandise purposes, but the tone of this series is obviously for a younger, toy-hungry audience (though part of that is just Toei's animation style). Previously Madhouse produced four different series and a couple specials, which, as is typical Madhouse, were much less kid/toy friendly.

Those series (and the newer Iron Man and Hulk animated movies) were universally awful.

Just finished the ruroni kenshin/samurai x ovas. I didnt know the people who made it wanted to crush the fans underfoot so bad. My god was it depressing. Im back to working on clannad and the live action sailor moon. Sailor moon is just sentai with girls. Its fun by corny.

Was it like the end of that Full Metal Alchemist movie depressing?

Jesus dude, you're going to follow up RK with Clannad? Do you want to shrivel up into a ball of pure sadness?

Sailor Moon is the single most perfectly designed and marketed series I have ever seen.

- It's a Shonen anime because it's serialized and has heavy action. This reels in the younger boys.
- It's a Shoujo anime because of the girly female leads and heavy romance subplots. This reels in the teenage girls.
- It has tons of erotic imagery. This pulls in the teenage boys and young men.
- It has tons of comedy. This pulls in everyone else.

Because of it's huge cross demographic, they can put out a Sailor Moon branded item for just about ANYTHING and it will sell. Combine this with a somewhat compelling story, interesting characters, and great art style and you have one of the most commercially successful franchises in history. The only thing I can think of that does it better is Super Sentai and they've had almost 40 years to get that formula right.

Pretty Cure seems to be the only other franchise to get even close to this formula lately, with multiple series and movies, among other things.

The first one is only sad in that the brothers are stuck together away from family. However if the ovas are to be believed it got better.
