[TV] The What Anime Are You Watching Thread!

Though the first series and movies are not canon, Brotherhood has the actual manga end from what I understand and it is quite a bit happier than the other versions.

3/4 of the way through clannad and main guy is what all the girls want. He picks instead the sickly, nice girl.

Attack on Titan

I'm way behind on the boat on this one, but I saw it on Netflix and decided to see what all the hooplah is all about. I'm honestly not a huge fan of anime in general because I find it's so over-the-top and ridiculously over dramatic with little subtleties. A lot of flash and little substance.

Two episodes in and I'm hooked. The concept alone is enough to keep me going.

That said, it has the same problems I have with almost all anime: the amount of unneeded dialogue really drags it down. Worse, it's not even clever or well-written dialogue (though that might be a problem with translation, I don't know). It's just dialogue for dialogue sake. Not to mention there's some really unnecessary animation for supposed "dramatic" moments, like the action blur lines for the scout telling a mother about her dead son. It would've worked so much better without the pizazz.

Still, like I said, the concept alone is more than enough to get me to keep watching for now. Though, as I skimmed down the list of episodes to see how long the first season was, I accidentally spoiled myself of a few moments, like what happens to the main character early into the show. Whoops. :/

I will say this much: the animation is fantastic.

Attack on Titan is a GREAT monster apocalypse story, one part survival and one part FIGHTING BACK! Though I will admit the main character cheats a little bit, but considering the titans are unpredictable giant kaiju I can let it slide.

Okay, so I'm watching the episode explaining Mikasa's background (ep. 7)

The absolute best moment of the episode is when she's given her trademark scarf. It's a great, quiet scene. But cripes, there's some unnecessary, drawn out moments. Like, when she's kidnapped, her kidnappers have a conversation about killing her father and then her mother and how the mother shouldn't have been killed because she had a higher worth. Fine, no problem. But then the show wastes five plus minutes doing a flashback to them attacking Mikasa's family. Why? They just explained what happened and that Mikasa was in shock. That was enough. Doing a flashback was completely unnecessary.

And then her realization that the world was a cruel place. Again, fine. But it's so drawn out, with ridiculously over-the-top animation, like her covered with lightning just before she strikes. It's far too overblown and would have worked so much better on a subtler approach.

Overall, it was still a good, character developing episode and we FINALLY see some Titans go down. But it's still that overblown excessiveness that I can't stand when it comes to anime. It's like everyone only has two emotions: quiet and reserved or REALLY LOUD AND OVEREMOTIONAL WHERE EVERYTHING MUST BE YELLING AT THE TOP OF THEIR LUNGS. No grey area or in between.

I was kinda dreading the start of the new Anime season. Lots of Card battle Animes or game adaptions.
But Season 2 of Mushishi, Harmony, Irregular at Magic High and No Game No Life and Sidonia no Kishi
quickly disspelled those doubts.

Yeah I really thought there wasn't going to be anything good this season, but I've already got like 7 shows I'm keeping tabs on right now.

Toonami's going to be airing the Attack on Titan dub.

Poor kids.
oh yeah all those kids watching their animu at midnight! :3

so I started watching Simoun, which I found while anime hunting last night, show is literally weird as heck and after 5 episodes its basically "LOOK AT ALL THESE CUTE MOE GIRLS KISS!" Thats what I have gotten out of it, I am not even sure what to think about 26 episodes of this shlock. I also found the Final Volume of Sailor Moon SuperS, I now need to find volumes 1-6, anyone have a source on it? I will pay real cash money to aquire the first run dvds! :) I had to put the word out I am looking to aquire stuff.

my god am I that old? I remember watching it in the afternoon's during the week, the late night stuff didnt start until I was in college, by which time i was buying everything they were showing.

The first anime I remember seeing on TV was probably DBZ on the "international" channels. It was in Japanese, but had Chinese or Taiwanese subs.

Other than that, it would have been Ronin Warriors/Samurai Pizza Cats, at like 6 or 7 in the morning on weekdays, along with SciFi's Saturday Anime at like 6am, showing stuff like Project A-Ko, Akira, Patlabor, Green Legend Ran and Dominion Tank Police.

I remember Simoun being pretty popular with the yuri crowd. It's not as schlocky as it appears, the story has some heft to it. That said, I ended up bailing around 1/3-1/2 the way through, so I don't know how they handled the rest of the story. I ended up wiki-ing the ending, sounded alright.

... sorry, that was my middle school era.

But I feel old too, if it makes you feel any better. :D

ok so neither of us are old apparently, what I was remembering was in 2004 when they moved to being Saturday nights only and Miguzi took over weekday afternoons. I have never had time to watch it since, Because I am sleeping by the the time it starts.

Black Lagoon is made of refined win and awesomesauce. And it gets better as the series progresses. Roberta, when you meet her, is perhaps amongst the best characters in it. But for being a series-long action movie with STRONG John Woo influences, it is phenomenal. I can't wait for the next installment...
Roberta's story was great. I really liked her and was surprised by her background. But honestly I've gotten to the part where
Eda is recognized as a CIA agent by Mr. Elvis's hitman, Russell.
I liked Eda before this, but now I am entirely intrigued.

Today I went anime hunting to the one Half-Price Books, I had yet to hit since last winter, I found this:

I think @Officer_Charon is probably going to be jelly...

Black Lagoon is one of those rare animes too where the dub is actually superior to the sub, crazy as that sounds. Favorite scene, incidentally.

For fellow Attack on Titan lovers, apparently a in-between episode was made recently that takes place during the training years. It's Jean-centered and it's hilarious, especially the edits to the opening.

Speaking of Attack on Titan, I finished the first (and only so far) season.

It's okay. Again, the ideas and action in it is very compelling. And some of the characters are interesting. Not many, but some.

But overall, it's just...eh, I don't know. I'm just not a big fan of anime in general. The last series I watched before this was Death Note and I had a lot of same problems with it.

Death Note is really the best you're going to get from serious anime, so if you had problems with that, I wouldn't expect anything to sway you.

Now silly anime, that's another thing entirely.
