Video Game News and Miscellany

On the other hand, apparently Nintendo is deleting mentions of that screenshot from Miiverse ...
Honestly, I think I'd be okay without having Ridley as a fighter. There's plenty of good choices that have made it in, and Ridley seems like he would work better as an in-level threat, given his size over other characters.

I'd be fine without him, myself. I mean, we're talking about a Smash game where three of the combatants are Little Mac, Mega Man, and the Duck Hunt Dog. What else can they really do?

It's not a necessity; it'd just be cool to have him playable. Metroid franchise needs more representation. I would take an actual Metroid, but they're not really characters except for the baby, and it has a stigma now since Other M.

I don't get why everybody keeps going "but Ridley takes up 5 screens!" Original metroid Ridley was bowser-sized.
Exactly. Ridley being this Godzilla-sized beast was a product of the Prime series; his size to Samus even in Super Metroid is Bowser's ratio to Mario in the 3D Land/World games. If they wanted giant Ridley, they could just have his final smash copy Bowser's; just replace Giga Bowser with Mecha-Ripley.

Team Meat has an updated version of The Binding of Isaac on the way, along with a new and warped trailer to show it. (warning: NSFW)

Apparently one study is claiming that downloading games has a larger carbon footprint than buying the physical media... To which I call FUD.
1. It only covers PS3, and thus assumes that download of games can never happen as a background task.
2. It warns that games are growing larger, but just kind of handwaves the idea that data transmission is getting more efficient.

Also, they're seriously using a number of 1.46kWh/GB of data? BULLSHIT! Even at the cheapest industiral electricity rates in the US, that would still be $0.09, and that's a lot cheaper than the rates I found for the UK. Why is $0.09 worth of electricity for a GB of data unbelievable? Because Netflix said, back in 2012 the cost of delivering 1GB of data is less than a cent. There's no way that delivering 1GB of data could be using 9¢ worth of electricity but cost only 1¢.

They concluded that over the lifecycle of a game, most of the carbon footprint went to the electricity to play it, but that a physical distribution added 1.3 kg CO2-eq while downloading added up to 8.0 kg CO2-eq. That's ridiculous. They conclude that downloading a large game could be nearly equivalent to using a gallon of gas driving around in a car... above and beyond the carbon necessary to press the disc, ship it from Austria to the UK, then have customers drive out to get it from their local store.

But, at the same time, they admit that if someone goes out to specifically buy a game, and doesn't buy anything else, then a 20GB download is equivalent to driving there? But they only talk about that in the "sensitivity analysis" and not in their final conclusion.

Holy shit, I can't stand the FUD any longer. This is just so much bullshit. I'm done.

Wii U version of Bayonetta gets another costume:

I don't think I'll be using this one.
BAHAHA, I don't even care how terrible this skin is. I NEED. :D

Bayonetta as a Fox? I wonder if @LittleKagsin will squeesplode when she gets back from Salt Lake Comic Con... Or maybe she'll just plain old explode from the frustration of not owning a WiiU.
I immediately drooled and thought to myself 'Cosplay?'. Hey now, I've got a Wii, so I'm one step closer to owning a WiiU...just for this game.

WildStar is already squishing servers together to bolster populations.
WildStar is great. It's just a WoW game trying to compete with WoW... which is dumb. Any successful MMO today has to distinguish itself from WoW to be successful.

- The Secret World went with a different genre of storytelling, massive customization, and a unique payment plan.

- LOTRO fully embraced the F2P model, give you A LOT of game for free and giving you the option to grind out free points for anything else you might want to buy.

- EVE went the total immersion route and made a game that requires an enormous investment but pays off.

WildStar is just Sci-fi WoW.

The thing is it's not as WoW-cloney as most MMO's. The game was built with a focus to cater to the hardcore, and that drove a lot of people away at level cap. Also, like the article mentions, WS is one of the only MMOs you really can't afford to slack off while playing. Even regular combat needs your full attention or you won't survive.

Like the guy says, if they want to survive for the long haul they've got to take a long, hard look at successful f2p models so they don't end up like Warhammer Online.

More news has come out about the next Ace Attorney game.

http://gematsu.com/2014/09/sherlock-holmes-joins-great-ace-attorney

For those who haven't heard about it, the next Ace Attorney has you as Phoenix Wright's ancestor. Who will be helping him on cases? None other than Sherlock Holmes (with John Watson replaced by eight-year old doctor Iris Watson). A new element to the game will be "Joint Reasoning", in which Wright's ancestor and Holmes combine their skills to determine the truth, with the ancestor having find where Holmes' deductions have truth and where they go too far.

And my annoyance that the next game won't focus on Phoenix has now dissipated because we get to know that his satan blessed ancestor worked with Sherlocke FREAKING Holmes! AWESOME!

There is a generation that will view minecraft with nostalgia as adults. Every middle class middle school and highschool child in America knows it or has played it.

They aren't buying a game studio or a game, they are buying customers.
It's also getting a movie and everything, not a dumb purchase.

You younger kids with your COLOR GRAPHICS on your oregon trail. Back when I played it it was just text with a map and a blinking icon of an ox and wagon, all in green and black. Damn near impossible to find a screenshot of it.[DOUBLEPOST=1410364994,1410364856][/DOUBLEPOST]edit - found it
