Gas Bandit's Political Thread V: The Vampire Likes Bats

Or hell, even if not beaten, what about panic? If it had happened to my wife, her rational mind would've gone out the window and down to flailing and screaming.

If anime has taught me anything, it's that sexual harrassment/assault of women is perfectly acceptable as long as it's met with violence.

And then the guy has stink lines come from his head and he gets a bloody nose that fountains bloody out of it.

Also that Jeffco thing is right down the road from me. Crazy.

edit: No wait it's in Colorado.

This shit is happening in a school district near me and it is terrifying. Students had already planned a protest walkout, but the teachers beat them to the punch and all called in sick first.

Hundreds, if not thousands by now, of students have walked out of classes all over Jefferson County, Colorado in protest.

The school board proposal that triggered the walkout calls for instructional materials that focus on positive aspects of US history and downplay eras of civil disobedience. It would establish a committee to regularly review texts and course plans, starting with Advanced Placement history, to make sure materials “promote citizenship, patriotism, essentials and benefits of the free-market system, respect for authority and respect for individual rights” and don’t “encourage or condone civil disorder, social strife or disregard of the law.”
The first thought that came to my mind when I read this was "What is going on, are we communists now?"

Right now students believe that this proposed change is an act of censorship, and are calling for honesty in classrooms.
This approach was drawn up by Julie Williams, a school board member who campaigned for the seat as "the conservative choice."

"Students at my school plan to walk out of classes in protest of the Jeffco school board’s new proposed Advanced Placement U.S. History Curriculum Revision Committee which aims to teach students to become more ‘patriotic’ and less ‘rebellious’ by portraying the history of our country in a better light," Arvada West High School senior Jack Shefrin said in a statement.
The concept of liberty was founded on disobedience.

Student participants said their demonstration was organized by word of mouth and social media. Many waved American flags and carried signs, including messages that read “There is nothing more patriotic than protest.”
Even though this one is blurry, it is my favourite image of this protest so far.

The message is very poignant. People DID die so we could have more freedoms and more rights, and now they don't want kids to learn about it. That's messed up.
Students are also supporting teachers, and some teachers are joining the student protest as well.

Jefferson County teachers protested the school board's changes to the way teachers are compensated last week, forcing the district to shut down two schools. The changes to the AP History curriculum was proposed along with the idea to dole out teacher raises based on evaluations. The way I understood it, "if you don't teach like we want you to, you don't get your deserved raise." I believe if this is allowed to happen that in a few years we will wish for the days when our public school system was merely incompetent. Don't think we have the worst schools because we don't. Not yet. It can always get worse.

John Oliver was so wasted on the Daily Show and none of us knew it until this. I actually prefer him to Jon.

At first I thought you meant he had a drinking problem.
It's a bit formulaic, but at least it's a formula I like.
Also, I still prefer Jon. John is entertaining, yes, but Jon is more relateable/a person I can care about.

we've come to the point where people want everyone to believe that if you have a gun, you're a bad guy.
We're already at that point. In fact, we're already at the point where people want everyone to believe you're a bad guy not only when you are in possession of a gun, but also if you merely possess (i.e., own) a gun, as if only evil people would ever own guns.

As protests heat up over the possibility of true democracy in Hong Kong and unrest over political oligarchy, this appeared on the Facebook page of Chai Yan Leung. The daughter of Hong Kong chief executive CY Leung had this to say, via Boing Boing:
"The necklace on my profile pic is not a dog collar, silly!!!" she said. "This is actually a beautiful necklace bought at Lane Crawford (yes - funded by all you HK taxpayers!! So are all my beautiful shoes and dresses and clutches!! Thank you so much!!!!)". Chai Yan hit out at those taunting her saying, "Actually maybe I shouldn't say 'all you'- since most of you here are probably unemployed hence all this time obsessed with bombarding me with messages". She later said, "It's ok, your mother still loves you".

"pro life tea party christian" is like saying "racist abolitionist slave owner." He's the very definition of mainstream republican (aka "Social Conservative")... and yeah, Todd Kincannon's got some screws loose.

What they seem to be saying is, "We aren't going to take up individual cases until we vote on this nationally."

I just fear that the right-wing block of the court, which has been making some absolutely frightening and anti-freedom decisions based on party ideology will again vote against the freedoms of the citizenry.

Right so the UK General Election next year will be preceded by 3 televised debates. The first will feature David Cameron and Ed Milliband, leaders of the 2 largest political parties. Fine. The second will add Nick Clegg, leader of the third largest political party. Also fine. The third will have those 3 and Nigel Farage, leader of UKIP. Um, what?

For those not familiar with British politics Nigel Farage is an odious little man whose party advocates the kicking out (whoops, sorry, "Voluntary Repatriation") of anyone who can't trace their family tree back to the Saxon invasion of England. "But mroosc1979," I hear you cry "if he's the leader of the fourth largest party then that's only fair." Except he's not. UKIP have only 1 MP. You know who else only has 1 MP? The Green Party, the Alliance Party, Respect.

And then there's the DUP (8 MP's), the SNP (6), Sinn Fein (5), Plaid Cymru & the SDLP (3 each). None of which have been invited to be part of these debates alongside Farage, even though he's only the leader of a party which is tied with 3 others for NINTH largest. Hell, there are 3 times as many Independent (no Party affiliation) MP's as there are UKIP MP's.

For that matter Farage himself has never been elected to the UK Parliament (the UKIP MP is Douglas Carswell), so why is this political pygmy being treated like a major player?

Because his presence will weaken the credibility of the smaller parties and further solidify the positions of those at the top.

I'm assuming that's code for "not white." Is that a fair estimation?

Kinda, the leadership of the party is focused more on East Europeans, which generally means white, but because their rhetoric is generally "damn these foreigners coming over here, sponging off the state, why don't they all go back where they came from?" they often attract the people who think it's code for "not white". And they're quite happy to accept these people - at least until they say something racist in public. Like telling (British born) comedian Lenny Henry he should "go and live in a black country" at which point they kick them out while whining about how every political party has some people like that & the media is just unfairly picking on UKIP when they report on what these people are saying.

1.) Fuck that betalords shit. You're posting on 4chan. If you had ANY sort of life, you wouldn't be on 4chan.

2.) I'm not surprised that mostly men showed up. Female gamers tend to socialize mostly with other female gamers or as part of an organized group like a guild. This is because of the shit they get.

3.) Male gamers complaining about male gamers isn't a bad thing when some of them are complete fucking monsters.

4.) Misgendering happens. It's easier to deal with in real life because you have the person there and you can look at them and go "Oh right." It's much harder to remember when you are only dealing with voices.
