I just watched the Firefly episode "The Message" where Mal and Zoey's old war buddy ships his "dead" body to them. I had a fridge logic moment.
If the dirty cop wasn't fooled the first time Tracey "died" to throw off his pursuit, why would he believe and stop pursuing when he gets a cursory glance from below at a "shot" Tracey lying "dying" on the catwalk above him for 10 seconds before being ushered back out the door? Why didn't he think it was a rather transparent and desperate attempt to fake Tracey's death again? It's not like a gunshot wound would be hard to fake, especially if it's only seen from afar and below. Why didn't he just go back to his ship and shoot Serenity?
