Minor victory thread

I never did get around to mentioning this, but I will now.

After returning from AZ at the end of last month from vacation, I had to do some "data protection" training (online, of course) when I came back to work. One of the things it mentioned in passing was the importance of having the most up-to-date version of your operating system.

This got me thinking as I was playing around with my woefully out-of-date iPod Touch that perhaps I should consider upgrading.

After some peeking around, I finally got an iPad mini from Wallyworld.

And I can say with certainty that I am definitely a happy camper for it.

Well, you'll want to update it to 8.1.1, then. It's supposed to help responsiveness with those older iPads.
(an iPad Mini is just the same as an iPad 2 inside, only physically smaller)

I did that this morning. [emoji12]

The only thing I don't care for is the lack of auto capitalization like there was on my iPod touch.

Oh, btw, I'm replying to this thread using Tapatalk. So there.

Are you meaning that it's not capitalizing words like "Sunday" or words like people's names or such? The new system has to be taught what you typically use caps on and will learn from your usage.

No; it used to automatically capitalize the start of a new sentence. It doesn't anymore.

I do like the bigger keyboard on the iPad mini, though. And the portfolio cover that I got for it does a great job as a stand.

Aut0-capitalization is a feature which has to be enabled (Settings -> General -> Keyboards -> Auto-Capitalization), but I have noticed that it does not always auto-capitalize, though so far it has only failed to do so when I was using dictation. Also, while you're in that settings page, you might as well add the emoji keyboard.

I am officially a substitute. Got my first background check done and was given a quick rundown of how things work. Right now I'm on the list to sub for the teacher's assistants, but I plan to add myself to the regular teacher sub list once I am more comfortable.

So...any suggestions since I've never subbed or taught a class? This would be for preschool through 4th grade, btw.

I never had much of a connection to animals. Make no mistake--I think they're cute. I enjoy watching them, but I never had this 'they're my family/they're like people' feeling. I'd never made a connection with an animal like the ones I make with people. My mother is very practical. When a pet died, she showed us sympathy but obviously didn't care that much. My dad has severe allergies and therefore can't get far enough away from most animals.

But this tortoise in my classroom is my pal now. I sound crazy to myself when I say I've had special moments with this goofy reptile. It's strange, but it's also nice. I feel like I understand an aspect of people now that I never did before.

I'm starting to feel like I'm really making progress getting better at making videos with Adobe Premiere. I've been dabbling with windows movie maker for most of the year, and only recently stepped up to "big boy toys." Here's my latest effort, which is the teaser trailer for season 2 of Halforums Academy 2 - which is something you all should probably check out if you haven't already because it's entertaining as hell and basically stars your fellow halforumites. :D

You're doing a great job. I've always preferred cutting film together in Premiere. I never let go of my "personal" copy from college and I use it for most of my stuff. It's a great program.

I have used both iMovie and Premiere, but will admit that stepping up to Final Cut Pro and Shake was a HUUUUUUUUGE step up in terms of what I was then able to do, at the cost of having thousands of new options, buttons, sliders, and windows to wade through to try and get it to do what I wanted.

Yeah. Windows movie maker, for all its limitations, had single-click solutions for things that now take me 15 clicks, 3 sliders and some right-click menu navigation.

But I never could have made the video I just linked in WMM, not in a million years.

Windows Movie Maker & iMovie (up through iMovie '06, at least) are great for "I have all these pieces and I want to put them together with some audio" with some nice canned transitions and minor adjustments, and that's great for who it's for.
But when you step up to Premiere/Final Cut, you step WAAAAAY up.

No, mr bond, I expect you you to react to laser neurological stimulation.
Well, that'll be for the next project. Today was, "No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to...wait, why the hell am I monologuing you? You're dead. I've already dissected out your brain, flash-frozen it, and am now using science lasers to chop out hunks of it. Man, this is WAY more efficient than giving my victory speech BEFORE he's dead!"

Also, I may or may not have lasered a smiley face into a non-essential (well, for our study at least) portion of the brain.

I successfully untangled a messy Slinky.

Why is this only in the minor victory thread? Because I handed it back and it was hopelessly snarled again in less than 10 minutes.

So I threw it away.

You bend it back, but it just goes slack
Everyone knows it's Slinky!
