Random Video Game Crap

Guy trains his Pikachu Amiibo to do nothing but spam thunder, just like human scrubs do. WHAT HAS SCIENCE DONE

I had no idea you could train an Amiibo's AI. Hell, I'm still trying to figure what value an Amiibo has for SSB4, a pick up and play type of game, just by gaining levels.

That said, I fought a lvl 9 CPU Pikachu today and it pretty much just spammed Thunder. It's hard-wired into the fucking build, enough to overtake a human host.

So I ordered my Ike and Lucario Amiibos over a week ago, and now I get an e-mail from Toys R Us telling me they cancelled that entire order.

Fuck TRU.

Why are they cancelling them?
It's been my experience that most retailers continue to sell items they don't actually have in stock, assuming they'll be able to get more. Then if they don't, they cancel the orders. I got my ass bit by that trying to buy some radios from Fry's earlier in the month.

The bitch of it is that TRU REOPENED preorders right after the canceling binge, limiting purchases to one per customer, and they were sold out again pretty much immediately after that.

Nintendo vastly underestimated the demand for these things. Maybe this will give them an incentive to produce, I dunno...MORE.

Just grabbed Little Mac at retail price from Amazon. In stock on the 21st.

Edit. Holy shit. One minute later and it's gone.

Edit 2: Also, if it was just a technical goof, and we are getting our Amiibos, then I take my previous statement back. Un-fuck TRU.

How...how do you screw up Tetris on a PS4? It's a puzzle game from the days of the original NES and Game Boy. How do you have a version with friggin' lag?
Tetris could run as a desk accessory on the original Macintosh, multitasking just fine on an 8MHz processor with only 512KB RAM.
That is ridiculous.

Apparently, if you got your TRU Amiibo preorders cancelled, you'll get an e-mail at some point that let's you reinstate that order. Okay. Looks like we can still get our goodies.

What the hell is an Amiibo?
Little figurines on a base which can interact with different Nintendo games on the Wii U. For example, when used with the new Super Smash Bros. for Wii U game, the Amiibo contains an AI which can fight in battles. It starts out at Level 1, but as it fights more, it learns how to fight better until it eventually reaches level 50.

They do more than that though. Right now, some of them can unlock weapons and mounts in Hyrule Warriors and others can unlock stuff in the new Mario Cart game. So they are kind of like Skylanders figures of Nintendo characters, except they are planned to have functionality across multiple games and do different things.

They are selling out everywhere. Nintendo is expected to make BILLIONS off of them.

From what I'm hearing, FFXV is going to have a lot of touches of FFVIII in it. I don't know if that's a good thing. Beautiful environments, emphasis on summons that you have to defeat / otherwise acquire, and a completely tacked-on magic system? Not to mention a statement, then an immediate contradiction of that statement:

Tabata: Also – I'm not sure if I can say this – in the world of XV, Noctis is the only one who can use magic.
Host: Yes.
Tabata: He's the only one with magic abilities. But as a game, having only Noctis be able to use magic doesn't really work, so we're implementing a rather unique system so that everyone in the party can use magic.

Now I remember back in FFVI on the SNES, for the first third of the game, only special characters could use actual magic - Terra, since she was half-Esper, and Celes, since she was genetically modified, as well as Kefka as a less stable experimental result, etc. In fact, it was considered freaky that Terra could use magic in that world. All the other characters had unique special abilities that made them useful to varying degrees in certain situations. Then once magicite started being accessible, allowing you to tap into the power of Espers, your characters would gradually gain magic, but you had to earn it. And you know what? That worked great. It made sense. Why shouldn't just one character be allowed to use magic? Hell, in FFX, at the start only Yuna and Lulu could use magic, and no one else could unless you modified their sphere grids to cross-train. And again, that allowed everyone to have well-developed unique abilities that made a difference with party selection.

Look, we already know that you're going to face magic-using enemies, because you always do, and I'm already willing to bet that one of the major baddies will have almost identical abilities to Noctis, because of course he does, and there will be some cliche forgotten link between the two of them, blah blah blah. So enough of the "Well, he's on the only one in the world who can use magic" bulllshit.

One odd quote: "Camping is one of the base features of XV. It's a world where time passes from morning to night, so in order to have Noctis and the others who inhabit it be more than just puppets, but living characters players can feel empathy towards, if you have them remain awake all the time, I thought it would be more effective if that was a bad thing."

*That* is how he wants to create empathy? By making you camp out every hour or so or be debuffed? Yeah, forget the "have human-like motivations for your actions" or "do things that make for a coherent, engaging story" - nope, just have them eat and sleep! Because god knows how much empathy people have for their Sims.

See, this what that guy was talking about with Squeenix. "Just do something human!"

I can exclusively reveal that the DLC will include a pooping minigame!

Even now that I have a PS4, I'm thinking FFXV is going to be a pass. Maybe it had a chance when the Kingdom Hearts guy was in charge, but they switched him off to finish KH3, then switched gears with someone else in control. It seems like an entirely different game from what Versus XIII was going to be, now that the company heads are paying more attention to it since it's going to be a number in the main series. They have no idea what they're doing. I wonder if any of them even play video games anymore.

Nomura being kicked off is probably the best thing that could have happened. That guy is seemingly a never ending delay nightmare.

It's too bad his style is so ingrained in the characters, though. It would be nice to see some that don't look/dress like GACKT.

This is kind of what happens when all of your senior staff leave the company when you refuse to let them do their own projects. It's happening all over the industry in Japan at this point; after years of watching their ideas get turned to crap, the big guys are starting their own companies like Mistwalker to make what they want to. Some of it (Blue Dragon) is pretty meh, but some of it (like Crimson Shroud) tried something new and interesting and others (Mighty No. 9) are the kind of stuff that made them great to begin with.

Konami? Capcom? Square Enix? All of these guys are in serious trouble. But the people who left their companies are doing just fine.

I need to know, if anyone does know: what purpose is there to an Amiibo in Smash Bros? I know what it does--I just don't know why you need this little AI figurine to play the game for you. It doesn't make any sense to me.

It's not playing for you, it's playing against you. You train it up and it learns to fight like you do, eventually becoming quite powerful and a decent challenge for you and your friends. It's a great way to fill in the extra slots in a match if a friend doesn't show up or you are a few short, but find the normal computer opponents lacking. They also have functionality in other games and will have more in the future.

So yeah... they only have a few uses RIGHT NOW, but we're getting more in the future and the massive sales of them so far has all but assured Nintendo that it's a good idea to use them for more stuff.

Oh yeah, I'm confident they'll be great in the future. Even with Mario Kart, you can use certain Amiibos to play dress-up. I just wasn't sure what purpose an AI stand-in had for Smash.

I think teaching one to fight like me would be giving it a poor education :(.

The purpose is to give you an excuse to buy cute Nintendo toys. Duh.

So as much as I'd like to sell some of my cards (like the current holiday cards), I can't. Remember when I lived in Maine for a year about two years ago? I had bought and sold some things on Steam while down there and since the billing address for my credit card at the time was the US, I was considered a temporary US resident. Apparently for tax purposes, that means I'm limited to selling 200 things on Steam before I have to provide some tax information (basically just proof of address). And I just hit my limit.

And of course, because of the Steam sale, I'm accumulating a lot of these holiday cards. Honestly, I wouldn't mind making the badge for it. I kind of enjoy making badges.

So, I can't sell them, but I have a number of doubles and even triples of holiday cards. Anyone wanna trade them for ones I need? Here's the ones I have extras of:
-Clementine (1 extra)
-Sparkles (2 extra)
-Tender (1 extra)
-Zippy

The ones I'm missing are Itsy, Monte, Sage, and Silver.
