[TV] The What Anime Are You Watching Thread!

Diamond Cut Diamond

Ten years ago 9 child espers were chosen for a TV program to show off their powers, until a tragic accident on stage caused the show's cancellation. Years later, one of the cast members was killed by an assassin named "Anti" an esper hating esper with the ability to cancel out other abilities. Now the race is on to find out who Anti is, defeat him and stop the murders.

Its a pretty cool super power story, even though to this day I feel the term "Esper" should not be some all encompassing word for super power user which this and many other media do. Also, why is it that ability users in these comics almost always give some special name to their abilities? At least in Jojo's Bizarre adventure their powers have anthropomorphised bodies to give a name to, these are just freaking powers! HOWEVER- these are just nitpicks I have on the genre, still a good comic. Also the art could be more unique, but what can you do?

The japanese overuse/abuse of the term "esper" has also irritated me on a number of occasions, especially since its root - ESP, stands for "Extra Sensory Perception." IE, being able to sense things you shouldn't, not necessarily having special pseudomagical fighting powers or even telekinesis.

Agreed, what extra sense allows for someone to blast fire or levitate a truck at someone? Just call them super powers for fuck's sake.

I'd even buy "psionic," but ESP is just about knowing, not about doing.
Anything with the "Psi" suffix is good, as long as the letters aren't capitalized than I just think of tire pressure.

I like the term metahuman for its accuracy, but I feel every other American super series overuses it more than Japan uses Esper. Really ran it into the ground. Still, its more accurate than calling them mutants, which is redundant seeing as every single life form born since the down of life is a mutated version of its previous parent all the way back to the original bacteria in the ocean. Though I do give allowances to TMNT style mutations.
Esper will always relate to the summons in FFVI for me, no matter who tries to re-appropriate it.
Heh, mistranslations.

Speaking of mistranslations.

Also, what mistranslation? I can't find anything about Esper being the wrong name. Some games have called them Eidolons, but that seems to be more of a ret-con after later games were released, like GP turning back into Gil in newer releases.

I read "phantom beast" on the wiki, I guess its not so much a mistranslation as just random naming.

Says that's the literal translation of the Japanese name, but thanks to the size of the UI and the already huge amount of text in the game, I'm sure the name change was needed. Plus, Genju just doesn't sound as good.

one more time for shits and giggles, I have You're Under Arrest season 1 Volumes 1-9 up for sale, as it has become rarer so I am looking for $100 or best offer.

Hunter x Hunter

Meh. Not liking how much of a butt monkey the Leorio character is compared to the rest of the cast. And they liked the Joker so much they decided to steal him. I'm not even sure "Hisoka" isn't a pun on "Joker". All in all pretty bland so far.

Gundam Build Fighters Try is just too much fun, I don't care that it's basically one big HEY BUY GUNDAM MODELS.
You have just described every Gundam series to ever exist my friend, as well as the reason for watching....most of them....some of them, was Gundam Seed as depressing as I remember?

Anything that is Universal Century is usually really fucking depressing, but in that meaningful "This is your war fantasy, kids. Grow up" way. That said, the most watched Gundam series in Japan BY FAR was G Gundam, which basically shows that Gundam isn't the touchstone that a lot of people think it is. I'm not surprised GBFT is doing so well: it's just as stupid fun.

Nah, the majority of Gundam shows don't focus as heavily on the machines as they do the political drama and such surrounding them and whatever version of pilot they're using (Newtype, etc). Some, like G Gundam or maybe Seed/Seed Destiny, would be the exceptions. This show is set in a world where Gundam is exactly what it is for us, a brand. They play battle arenas with the models and kitbash like mad to make all sorts of awesome stuff. The blatant advertising in on par with the heyday of 80's-90's cartoons here in the States. There's a story, sure, but the main push is the fights and cool robots.

I just can't get into the mecha shows at all. The whole idea of using giant humanoid robots as war machines just seems too illogical to suspend disbelief.

No, it's still good, especially compared to some stuff that just doesn't hold up, like Tenchi Muyo.
Despite the...obvious incest(HOW DID THIS MAKE IT TO THE STATES) I still prefer it to most harem shows. At least Tenshi had a legit reason to not get with any of those chicks, they're all either crazy or related to him! Other haem shows- childhood/middle school friend. Especially Shuffle, whose premise is faulty for a number of reasons. "Our world made contact with the realm of gods and demons several years ago, but rather than be an awesome X-men style magic series we're going to focus on who is going to fuck this boring male protagonist." And who the fuck decides to marry someone, after playing with them ONCE when they were three years old?! I can buy that this world has magic, I can NOT buy that someone's parent would agree with such a ridiculous reason for courtship! I'M RATHER TOASTED! [/QUOTE]

Kinda why I prefer stuff like G Gundam and that one where the robot turns into a dragon, when its powered by magic it works.

The problem with Tenchi is the original author wasn't a part of every series, so some are still good while others aren't (or the story gets weird and confusing, in the case of the RyoOhki OVA series).

Personally I still think the two original series (OVA and Universe) and the offshoot War on Geminar are great, but that could be nostalgia bias in some way, too.

It only works because of the existence of the Minovsky Particle. Basically, governments release these things on the battlefield and it disrupts sonar, radar, thermal, and laser targeting... so you can't just use jets or long range support fire anymore. Because visual confirmation is kind of requirement in that kind of fighting (unless you drop smoke), walking robots make sense because they are all terrain and can carry heavy enough firepower to destroy entire tank squads. I mean fuck... the Leo in Gundam Wing uses a 128mm machine gun. It's firing TANK SHELLS like a machine gun. That's unimaginable firepower. Then beam weapons become a thing...

Mind you, this does nothing to explain why the pilots aren't vomiting all the time from the constant motion and vibrations. It's also a huge cop out because giant robots only make sense in this kind of battlefield.

Oh gods, Tenchi Muyo ... there was stuff we watched just because it was on.

I can't believe I'd still be awake some nights watching Yu Yu Hakusho on Toonami. It wasn't good ... but I didn't turn it off.

you shut your mouth! :3
Tenchi is a good example of how to do harem anime in my opinion, at least its better than love hina... "shudders"

here is the thing, the 90's ovas, ryo-oh-ki, GXP, and geminar are all on the same timeline. I really wish geminar would have pushed for more info on what happened to the original group, but Kenchi was to busy drowning in pussy.

HEY, yu yu hakasho is an excellent show, of all the shonen jump titles that have seeped onto american tv it has by far one of the deepest stories, not to mention we are talking about a property from the mangaka that writes hunter x hunter. I always felt like this was his answer to his wife writing Sailor Moon.

I really liked the Tenchi Muyo OVA. It was one of the series I had discovered (and actually found in a store) years before it aired on Cartoon Network. I didn't know there were other series past that until on saw them on CN, and found them less impressive. Love Hina was...eh. Not horrible for harem series, but harem series tend to be pretty "meh" to begin with.
Yu Yu Hakasho let me down, though. I loved the first 5-7 episodes, and then it became "you need to train and fighting tournaments blahblahblahDBZ" and I was done with it. I didn't realize it was a shonen when it was being advertised. I really wish it had stuck to the "ghost detective funny adventures" it seemed to start with. But I do like that it gave me Kuwabara and his "I'm the top worst student!" line.

After the demon world tournament they had adventures, and then another tournament >_>

While I feel the show should've had any other name than "Ghost Detective"(more like, ghost shooter) I still think its good. ESPECIALLY that arc where a bunch of X-men started coming out of no-where, THAT was cool.
