I'll only cease being butthurt about it if somebody in the movie explicitly says "These new TIE designs are capable of atmospheric flight" or some such, because I've been grousing over this for at least 20 years, when some dingbat over at lucasarts got lazy in Rebel Assault and put TIE fighters in canyons and caves on tatooine.
Putting aside for the moment that EU isn't canon (and really, vast swaths of it *shouldn't* be), what game was it that had the TIE/A and the TIE/D in atmosphere? That scene of driving past the crashed ISD is pretty pants-wetting, to be sure.
