[TV] The What Anime Are You Watching Thread!

That's another one that's in the fourth season now, I think. Most will know it just for the Stardust Crusaders arc, which is what's airing now. The manga/show's story is told over centuries, each arc generally following a different generation of Joestar and Brando.
I'm actually starting out at the very beginning with the Phantom Blood arc, which is the one centered around Johnathan Joestar. Even at two episodes in, I'm really digging the overall feel, from its interesting color schemes to its visual style (which feels like it pulls more from manga than normal) to the personality of its characters.

Also, I really like the opening theme for it.

How I See Anime Girls:
Ooo... nice legs. Nice arms. Nice torso. Nice boobies. What the hell, face?!? Why is there a weird doll face on top of this more or less realistic body? Also, usually weird feet, too.
I know the feeling. Attractiveness in Anime seems to be dictated by a ratio of eyes over mouth.

I got a little bored and lost interest in the second season, but yeah s1 is a lot of fun. The author drops insane amounts of references to 70's-80's rock, especially when you get to Crusaders and the Stands are introduced.

Yeah, it was the Stardust Crusaders arc that I watched back in the day, though I did get the reader's digest version of what came earlier.

Is Mikagura School Suite good? I ask because I just find the concept of a school that gives kids super powers to fight each other's clubs...as normal curriculum odd. I hope it turns out they're training them to fight some evil thingamawhozit cos that alone is kind of a weak premise for a battle manga, at least in my opinion.

Well this Crunchyroll subscription just redeemed itself, with Inuyashiki! From the creator of Gantz comes a story about an old man who despite how much he works for his family, he gets almost no respect from them. It gets worse when one day he learns he has Cancer, making him one night walk out to collect his thoughts in a field where he sees a bright light, and the next day notices he's...different.

And that's all I'm typing, its really good and I recommend it to anyone!

Edit: Also may I remind you this is from the creator of Gantz so...expect the most logical outcome. Still good just...yeah.

I binge-watched all 12 episodes of Knights of Sidonia today. Not bad stuff. Reminds me a lot of Evangelion only without the parts I found intolerable. Also, the blatantly obvious over-reliance on CG exacerbated by the low framerate broke some of the immersion for me - especially during certain character reactions/facial expressions that looked particularly artificial. I wish they'd done more hand-drawn stuff. The scene lighting is pretty atrocious sometimes, and often the mouth movements of characters looks even worse than Reboot ever did. But, behind it all is an interesting story and layers of conflict. I hope more of this comes out to watch.

It's insanely rare to find CG in anime that doesn't look fucking awful, and unfortunately it's being used more and more to (I would think) cut production cost and time.

Strangely enough, it's a moe show that's used some of the best CG I've ever seen in a 30 minute cartoon.

There are other shows that use it more sparingly and it doesn't hurt. One of my favorites, Code Geass, was hip deep in CG but didn't have the quality problems Sidonia does (other than Clamp's noodle people designs of course). And, of course, Ghost in the Shell SAC made extensive use of it, to varying degrees of success. It was just... egregiously bad in Sidonia. Like, some of the characters looked like amateur MMD models, and sometimes I swear the frame rate dropped to single digits.

Yeah generally it's the worst when used for characters. Lately I see it mostly used for vehicles and large crowds, which makes sense but almost always sticks out thanks to poor animation.

Psycho-Pass

This one is kind of interesting, but slow. Seems to ride Ghost in the Shell's coattails a little.

Been watching Assassination Classroom. This has been a good find, with a fun idea accompanied by interesting characters and a solid sense of humor.

Also, I quite enjoy Koro Sensei.

Psycho Pass 2
Not nearly as good as 1. More focused on the tech than the first to its detriment. Still a nice Shamylan twist at the end.

Irregular at Magic High School
I have just started this one but I have to say the weird incest stuff is uncomfortable.

Oh Japan, you are really really really REALLY obsessed with cramming this fetish into your medias.

So I decided to lay off the torrenting and see how Crunchyroll is. I have to admit, it's kinda nice not to have to keep a mental list of what days to check the usual sites and sit there waiting for shitty 480p videos to download (encoding causes high res videos to leap into the 750mb+ range easily), or having shows get held ransom/held up by the rather childish fansub groups.

So I saw the episode of SAO2 where Deathgun was revealed...holy shit was that last act horrifying. Its legit scary, totally makes up for the myriad of nitpicks I have for this show.

It's too bad Is it Wrong to Try and Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? has such a stupid name, because the show's got very little harem elements and some of the best characters/animation/fight scenes of the entire season.

This is a series I've actually been wondering about, because every time I see a still frame, it doesn't seem to match the (translated) title.

Yeah, I mean he's got a couple girls that fall for him, but he's a lot like Tenchi in that he just sort of shrugs it off for other things (in this case replace Tenchi's chores with Bell dungeon-crawling).

Some fun stuff showing up this season so far.

Working! season 3, first episode was a little slow but I love the other seasons, so I'm in.

Ushio to Tora surprised me, it's a total 90's shounen throwback and I'm super excited for more.

Charlotte looks fun, random kids are born with special (but somewhat incomplete) powers. Girl can be invisible to one person at a time, one can teleport but doesn't have total control of his landings, and the MC can posses people for about 5 seconds at a time. MC is also a huge, self-centered jerk and is hilarious.

GATE looks like an interesting cross of fantasy and modern day. Titular archway shows up in a major Japanese city, connecting it to a fantasy-esque realm. Soldiers from the fantasy world invade and get driven back, Japan sends in JSDF units to find out what's going on.

Rokka no Yuusha is shaping up to be a typical fantasy shounen but we don't get a lot of these anymore so I'm giving it a shot.

There's a couple others that look interesting, but I'm going to give them one or two more episodes to decide for sure. Still a few shows that won't be premiering till this week, too.

As much as I enjoyed the first episode of DBSuper, I have to say the old voices really don't fit anymore in a lot of places. You can tell Goku's VA is getting old (she just sounds like an old lady now), and Gohan still sounds like a 10 year old (which is really weird since she's the voice of Goku and his kids). Even kid Trunks sounds like someone in their 50's trying to sounds like a child.
