Halforum Minecraft Server

I see the "pocket" edition becoming the canonical edition, with the WinX version following it, and the Java one winding down.

Makes sense actually. They're probably getting more money incoming from the pocket (C++) edition right now. And really, it's a way to get everything to one codebase, as that's how the iOS and Android ones are written. I'm sure it's just another "Front end layer" on top of that for the WinX version. I see the Java one dying eventually. What that'll mean for linux/mac users, I dunno. They need to do the same as WinX and such, with a "layer" on the front for them too, with again, the same back-end codebase.

We'll see I guess. It'll be a couple of years in any case.

As long as it's as modifiable as it is now, I'm all for it. They needed to get all the versions alligned. The mods are what made the game as huge as it is though.

TOO MANY THINGS TO PLAY WITH!

The new windows 10 version is out now. I'm hoping to check it out tonight. It's not compatible with the Java version at all, which stinks but was expected. It also sounds like a mac version is in the works with a Linux one to follow.

1.9 snapshot is out too! Very early build, and lots of things aren't implemented fully or broken, but it's available. If you use it don't forget to back up your worlds first.

I'm at the point in Minecraft where nothing is new and building massive edifices is the only thing that remains. I get bored very easily in Minecraft now. I like exploring and finding new things, but it's all the same now.

I mostly play Minecraft on mini game servers now, I really like build battle, even though I'm really not fast enough at building.

Hey @papachronos, the windows 10 version does have the nether, along with brewing, enchanting, cats, etc. It's not compatible with the pe version just yet. It's going to be when .12 comes out. It's available as a beta right now for Android, and includes all of those things and more. I never really got into the pe version because it was lacking so much for survival, but this makes it a bit more tempting. There will be a bit of a redesign on the controls, below is a ss of it when I was playing with it. Jump is now on the right, and inside the directional keys is the crouch lock.

There's still no end, but this update will add quite a bit.

How hard does that make it to sneak?

--Patrick
It makes it easy. Double tapping it turns on crouch, and it stays on until you tap it again. I kinda wish it was in the full version. I would always let my finger stay from the crouch key and fall to my death.

The main thing that PE and Win10 will be missing after this update is the End, and functioning Redstone. You can gather it, and make powered rail that doesn't need a source, but no actual circuitry.

Yet. I hope.

So, I'm thinking that I'm going to have to finally shut down the server. With a kid on the way, a new addition needed, and another car payment, I think I need to cut back a bit. If my Internet was halfway decent, I would host it at my house.

It'll be at the end of the month, and I'll post the final backup and a map. If anyone has the urge to keep it going, you are welcome to.

If my upload speed was even halfway decent, I'd offer, but right now we have only one offsite person, and he keeps complaining about rubberbanding even after the server upgrade, so that makes me think our 768k up just isn't enough to handle it.
I've been toying with upgrading the Internet here, will keep y'all posted. Biggest barrier right now is that it would mean having to switch the Internet here into my name.

Well, I'm not surprised. After an initial push, it really died off. I'm going to miss that iron farm, though.[DOUBLEPOST=1440601412,1440601375][/DOUBLEPOST]I could probably host it at my house. What would that entail?

Hey now, I logged back in recently.
@figmentPez has been busy.

You have to have a decent Internet connection.
You have to have a halfway decent machine you can leave running 24/7
You have to know enough about setting up your router to forward incoming connections to it.
That's about it, really.

I could probably do that. I doubt the bandwidth hit would be that high. Ooh! And I could do funky stuff like make it day!

If you want to try it, I can get you the backup, along with the whitelist. Let me know if you have questions.

I think I'll do it. My system is on pretty much all the time. I only worry about how smooth it'll run when I'm downloading or playing other games.

All right, I'll start looking into better Internet (been meaning to anyway), but don't let this keep anyone else from volunteering.

I might be able to so something. I mean, I don't play any more, but the station has 8mbit up and there's room in the office for me to stick a machine under a desk. Only catch is I don't know if any of the machines in my graveyard are punchy enough to handle it. Most of them are dual core XP machines with 1 gig of ram. They were cheap 7 years ago.

If I hadn't just had our internal website die, I would have tried putting the MC server software up on it. Gah.

It's hard drive failure though, and I've got spare hard drives... so I might be able to make it work. It's just a matter of wrestling the thing back out of our rack and doing the repairs, which up until now, hasn't really been a priority.

I'd people are serious about taking it over, I'll keep it up another month so they have a chance to get it going. A couple things to keep in mind.

Memory is pretty important. I would say we need at least 4 gig to keep the server running smooth. The farms aussie builds are nuts, and really tax the server. Not to mention people like pez that have tons of animals.

Second is backups, especially if you host it yourself. I learned the hard way. Make sure you are backing up to remote storage somewhere, and you either watch to make sure they're going through or have some kind of notification.

You're using professional hosting, right?

Might it just be simpler to have someone else take over the payments on it?

Patreon for the Halforums MC server? I'd chip in some, even if the last time I logged in was months ago. When I want it, I want it. ;)

And for the record, I'd do it in a second if I had a decent internet connection. I have a spare machine that we use as a media server SOMETIMES that would easily handle the load as a dedicated server (only an old Q6600, but it has 8GB of RAM), but my internet is 1Mbps up and 7 down. Totally inappropriate.

$18 a month. We might not need all that any more though. The package I have has 3 gb of ram, unlimited storage on an ssd, unlimited slots, and dedicated ip.

This seems like a decent option here. If we set up a patreon and 6 people chipped in 3 bucks each a month, that'd cover it.
