Video Game News and Miscellany

Ha ha ha, the physical PC version of Metal Gear Solid 5 is literally a bluray with an 8 mb Steam installer file on it. That's it.

Jesus.

I can't actually find a place to buy it in Canada, so I assume it must be a different market.
Who buys physical copies of PC games these days, anyway?

You're SUPPOSED to buy physical copies of the games! Otherwise, you can't put them on your shelf and marvel at them, and if steam ever goes away you lose everything! Right?

People who don't have steady internet access? People with limited data caps? People who like to collect game boxes? People who don't trust Steam to be around in 10-20 years and like to play retro games on the original systems? There are a lot of reasons why people might want the physical copy.

And there it is, the Mad Max reviews are trickling out (for the like 8 total review copies WB actually gave out) and surprise surprise, the game is:

[DOUBLEPOST=1441092017,1441091575][/DOUBLEPOST]Also, the bullshit microtransactions in MGS5 seem to be worse than everyone feared. The extent of which isn't quite fully known yet but it's seeming really bad.

So, FOBs are fucking over 20 bucks a piece.

The game is full of reminders, like this:

Huh, good thing I got the game for free. Kinda wonder if the internet backlash will get high enough that they'll do a little reversal on this.

Is anybody backing this?

I saw it on Imgur, and it looks pretty cool if the video loops are any indication.

I'm disenchanted with kickstarted games, currently... I'll wait to see some post-release reviews.

But yeah, those gifs looked hella sweet.

Hadn't seen it yet, somewhat tempted to toss €20 their way...But....KS games....argh....and play time....and all that.

Aside, though, their reward tiers are a bit nuts. Personal opinion. I can see some of them, but some of the €100+ tiers are completely and utterly useless.

I'm still in it for KS games. I believe in the concept and I've gotten some actual good ones this way.
So did I, really (well, PoE), but honestly, while it's cheaper than buying full price, it's actually more expensive than waiting for the price to come down - which meansi t's not exactly financially sound for me to do.

True, but if you're only looking at it as a pre-order platform, of course it's going to lose. I see it as a way to support and promote titles that might not otherwise see the light of day. THAT is worth the wait.

I was really disappointed in Carmageddon Reincarnation, and I was the most enthusiastic backer you ever saw. The finished product was just not up to snuff.

I hope Underworld Ascendant goes better.

Also, some of my distaste for most of the steam early access titles bleeds over into kickstarter distaste too, I think.

Kickstarter isn't meant to be a way to purchase things you want. It's purpose is not to get good deals on upcoming games. That game developers often offer lower level pledges a copy of their game is both a courtesy and an incentive. The different tiers of rewards for donation aren't meant to be value-oriented, they're thank you gifts. The purpose of Kickstarter is to pledge money to fund the creation of something that (supposedly) wouldn't otherwise get funded and created.

I understand that. I suspect others expressing distaste for KS games understand that as well. What I'm saying is oftentimes KS projects sound like interesting ideas that need outside support to get made, but then turn out to be bad ideas or unsustainable ideas that were having problems getting developed for valid reasons. Sometimes the major studios and publishers are right for not producing some of the trash that comes out of Kickstarter.

So basically, Heroes of the Storm just made everybody who wants to play ranked matches solo queue, or at most, have a team of two?

Puggers FTL.

I mean, I only played it that one time with other halforumites, but even that wouldn't be possible now, if I understand this.

As someone who plays SMITE... I get it. Pre-made teams of people with voice chat are the bane of competition unless that is the norm and unleashing them on people who don't have a dedicated team is basically ensuring only connected people will rise to the top. It's the same with ranked PVP in all games: if you don't have a team you won't win. If you can't win, you won't get on a team. It's a vicious cycle that exists only to exclude other players.

If it's only in ranked games, fine, w/e. If it was in every single game type, then I think it's shenanigans.

It would seem to me to make more sense to have a separate team/guild/whatever ranking system and a player ranking system, rather than just force everyone to always play in PUGs, though.

You can still queue up in however big a party you want in quick match, which, while not officially ranked, does keep a hidden MMR value with you to match you against opponents of equal skill. This change is only to hero league, the official ranked ladder. It's also likely to change. Blizzard has been experimenting with it, and has gone from seperate solo and team hero leagues, to everything together but only 5 man pre-mades get matched with other 5-man premades, to now this.

Look... if the Rockstar Thirstcutter had just been some free DLC they threw in that wasn't super obnoxious, it would have been... well, acceptable at least. There ARE ways to do in-game advertising that aren't super annoying... Parasite Eve 2 comes to mind, with it's in-game Coca-cola healing items. It worked because why wouldn't Aya want to drink a coke after dealing with some fucking monsters? It's not like you were forced to use them (though Coke was one of the better healing items). And really, I could almost see someone using Rockstar stuff to build a car... if this was Fallout, we wouldn't think twice about someone doing the same with Nuka Cola stuff.

But this is IN YOUR FACE with ads on the loading screens. It's obnoxious.

The pc version of Arkham Knight finally got a patch, and it runs a hell of a lot better now. I was able to crank everything up to max, and it started at a buttery smooth 60 fps, whereas before it was capped at 30 and couldn't even maintain that.

It looks like those missing textures and effects from the ps4 version have also been restored. It looks damn good now.

So, apparently Jerry of Penny Arcade called out outlets that gave Mad Max a bad score in the most absurdly dopey way possible. Basically decrying anyone who doesn't fall in line with Metacritic because.....reasons?

It's honestly batshit insane.

What the fuck? Man, they defend, tooth and nail, mediocre triple A games all the time, but this is seriously batshit insane.
