[TV] The What Anime Are You Watching Thread!

Watched Season 2 of Knights of Sidonia. It was OK. The issue with inexplicably bad framerate in parts that should have been cheap/fast to render persists, most noticeably when the camera is just showing a single person walking or talking with single digit framerates, making it look like how cartoons imitate old 8 bit walking animation, or that the speaker's mouth seems to only form one long vowel over the course of a sentence. Seriously, even Reboot did this better. But then there's mecha and particle beams at 30fps. Makes no sense.
Anime has ridiculously cheap budgets. Comparing averages, anime budgets are less than half their western counterparts. They need to be very careful with how they apportion their budgets, so for shows with action scenes, sometimes they need to cut down to the bone. Mecha shows are aimed at otaku, and otaku don't care much if some scenes look like shit so long as the action scenes bring it home.

Well, they must have had a budget of about $3.50, because the framerates were worse than trying to play DOOM on a 286.

Maybe @checkeredhat could offer some insight, but my understanding is that action scenes are crazy expensive to animate well. And while I don't know what Knights of Sidonia's budget is, for a comparison I do know that Fullmetal Alchemist had an animation budget of around $5 million for the entire 51 episode run (granted that was like a decade ago). That's less money than a single episode of Game of Thrones. And Knights of Sidonia is no Fullmetal Alchemist.

also the blu-ray ultra limited mega edition of the first FMA just dropped...for TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS...what the actual fuck.

I might not be the most connected on handheld gaming, so I could be mistaken, but it seems to me they really missed their window on an Ace Attorney anime. 5 or 7 years ago it'd have been massively propelled by the memetic mania the entire internet was caught up in.

I mean, I've never played it, but 2007-2010's internet content sure as hell made sure I knew every last little thing about it.

If anything, Professor Layton should have gotten more hype than it did. It got 7 games, a spin-off, and a movie from a world that would be a billion dollar franchise in the hands of any other company... these days all Level-5 seems to want to do with it are make shitty iOS games.

My son watched the crap out of that Professor Layton movie. I just sit here and dream of him being in Smash Bros, since my other dreams about him can never come true. [emoji14]

Thinking about watching Madoka Magica. Yes/No? I don't mean with my daughter, she's good with Slayers and Sailor Moon. :p

its the ring cycle with a side of Mephistopheles, you will also need to see the third movie to finish the arc and see the ring come full circle.

Worth watching, IMO, if only because it plays really well (in my opinion) to any audience that has some kind of nostalgia for magical girl shows.

so its literally been months since i watched anime, between busy time at work, my fathers cancer and death, dealing with his estate post that, busy time at work again, to now, I have a large LARGE pile of anime and literally no energy to get to it.

And doesn't mind seeing the entire concept of them broken in half right before your eyes.

Madoka is to Evangelion what Steven Universe is to Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan. The first deconstructs the very idea of the genre, breaking down the concept's problems and showing their true course, while the second acknowledges the problems of the genre and reconstructs it in such a way as to keep them from undermining the story.

also for the record the only reason I am shocked about fullmetal alchemist is that its the series that has already been released on dvd like 3 times since it debuted in 2004! I cant believe anybody that has the dvd sets even wants to spend that kind of money on a show that predates HD(kinda).

Now it's time for "Mick's manga of the moment!"

Dolly Kill Kill

A giant monster apocalypse manga in the heir of Attack on Titan, where giant doll monster invade Earth SLAUGHTER most of them. Its with the efforts of a young boy Iruma, and the group "Trial and Error" that humanity has a chance of taking them on.

Not an original premise, but the action scenes are REALLY good, and the monster designs and power stunts are interesting as well.

Mushi Shi

Wow. 5/5. Even if you don't like anime, you should watch this. It's just really well told, and well directed. It's essentially a supernatural anthology series with a loose frame story of a wandering expert in these spirit like beings called mushi. It doesn't really matter though, because they are plot devices capable of whatever the current story needs. The score is beautiful.

Princess Nine

so we marathoned princess nine, it started as a pretty cool anime about a girls school building a baseball team and their finding talent but as they proceeded to get into real competition it turned into BWAH I CANT PLAY BASEBALL RIGHT BECAUSE I HAVE PROBLEMS whither emotional, family, or otherwise. it was fun ill leave it at that and we made it through so that was cool.

I actually remember seeing a few episodes of this on the streaming anime service my cable company had for awhile. I enjoyed it but never got to finish it.

I really liked this series when I watched, but that was a decade ago, so my memory could be fuzzy. To me, it felt like the usual anime drama problems, but not excessively so. I thought it was a fun premise (girls playing baseball! yay!), but I don't know if I'd put it in my top 10 favorites. Maybe an honorable mention.

I am probably being unduely hard on it. I did feel like the good players who stink because they are distracted by personal problems was overplayed as it was a constant issue after the midway point even though the girls only played 4 games before the end.

This is a huge trope in Sports Anime. You're not going to find one that doesn't at least address it, even in popular works like The Prince of Tennis, Eyeshield 21, Fighting Spirit/Hajime no Ippo, Kuroko no Basket, or Tiger Mask. It's so prevalent because Japanese culture views group activities and such as more important than personal issues because you're supposed to be putting the team first. Really, the fact that it came up at all was proof the show creators were taking the entire thing seriously.

Well I saw an ep of "Yokai Watch" today, for those of you who haven't seen it imagine Pokemon...and that's pretty much it, sometimes they solve their problems with fighting, other times its with bull-crap messages, whatevs.

Yokai Watch is explicitly Pokemon, to the point that it's actually doing better than Pokemon in Japan. They are going to try and bring it to the US sometime next year and are hoping for similar success.

And I REALLY hope the third game comes over here, where they go to America and fight and befriend "Merican" Yokai, which from the samples I've seen have nothing to do with American ghost/folklore(or ANY folklore). BEHOLD THE VIEWING GLOBE!

We got ourselves a modest hodge podge of both inoffensive stereotypes and whatthehellery. Also that girl in the bathtub? PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE be a drowning victim who became a cute ghost, the parents will go NUTS!

FINAL NOTE- Rudolph has apparently gotten into some shit.
