Thanks obama!
The ACA is what is throwing a wrench in all this, indeed. I'm slightly mystified that the owner hasn't decided to just yank our insurance entirely and leave us at the tender mercies of healthcare.gov, since we have less than 50 employees and he probably could do it and not get fined.

Probably because then, if he's not providing insurance, we might all demand raises.

But not having insurance IS a raise because premiums aren't coming out of your check!

And based on my knowledge of the area, based on American TV shows and how would they ever get anything wrong, it's all sand over oil, too.
Now, you would think this is where someone would make a joke about the US invading Texas for the oil. And of course, that'd be stupid, because Texas is already part of the US, so there's absolutely no point in the US invading, which would make such a joke entirely superfluous and juvenile. Not to mention dumb as hell.

Fortunately, I like superfluous and juvenile dumb jokes.

OH GREAT NOW THE US IS GOING TO INVADE TEXAS FOR THE OIL!!!1

I assumed this place was all desert and cactus until I moved here. Now that seems kind of silly.
Yeah, it's just west Texas that's all desert and cactus. EAST Texas is all swamp and overgrowth!

Could be worse, though.

We could be in the panhandle, where it's all a barren wasteland of scrub and rocks.

Please have the meeting in French or in English. Either is fine. Half and half where you switch mid sentence makes my brain hurt.
As you probably know already, Belgium's a bilingual country. The majority speaks Dutch, a large minority French, but historically the French-speaking were dominant.
Anyway, as a result, most Dutch-speaking learned French as a second language, while most French-speakers learned English as a second language. As a result, national meetings tend to be in French - after all, everyone speaks that, right? Of course, being forced to hold meetings etc in a foreign/second language is not conductive to being very convincing or well-spoken... As the Dutch-speaking gained power or however you want to say it, there's been a bit of a reversal - but since the French speaking, in general, don't speak a word of Dutch, we now often have meetings where either everyone will speak their own language, or everyone is obligated to switch language every other sentence, or where we're all forced o speak English, everyone's second or third language. I've seen all of those used in practice, and none of them is good.

I still am at a loss as to why my phone posted in that odd language last week[DOUBLEPOST=1444950807,1444950548][/DOUBLEPOST]

And you speak all three?[DOUBLEPOST=1444951027][/DOUBLEPOST]We had one recently where we could call in:

Entirely in English with French speakers muted and live-translated.

The reverse in French.

No live translation and you just listened in whatever language the speaker used.

We did the first because there were only two of us that were bilingual at the table. The love translator was hilarious. For the first hour he was fantastic, by the third hour, he was SO over it. We couldn't stop laughing.

Dear graduate students, please stop asking me inane questions and read the frakkin' instructions on these scholarship competitions. You're in PhD programs; the assumption is that you're intelligent. Prove it to me.

That's it, I've fucking had it. I'm fucking done. I am done with the incompetent-management tango, I am done being bitched out in front of all of the department heads by a company president that makes assumptions on half-understood information and never apologizes for his misunderstandings and mistakes (not even in private). I love most of the people that I work with, but I am done. I had a mental health day off yesterday because I was ready to walk out on Wednesday, and I'm already ready to walk out again, 2.5 hours into my day today.

Welp, I just got CC'd on an e-mail requesting "reinstatement" as an ESPN affiliate since we won't be airing Colin Cowherd after all. It's news to me we were actually cut off - I heard they were threatening to yank our affiliation, but we've still been airing ESPN content all this time, and getting the special football feeds, and receiving all the program e-mails... but I guess we were out in the cold and I just didn't know it? Gah.

I just hope our owner learns from this, that he can't just do whatever the hell he wants with no repercussions. I still don't know what the fuck he thought would happen.
