[TV] The What Anime Are You Watching Thread!

Also I KNOW they ripped that balloon monster's design off from somewhere, this series is a steaming pile of unoriginality, and I LOVE it! BRING ON THE CRAP!

Finally got around to watching Paprika. That was different. I did not see the Tokita and Atsuko twist coming at all.
It was actually pretty obvious to me.

Paprika's hair is a mix of Tokita's messy curls and Atsuko's straightness, as well as having a bit of his redness. She's supposed to look like the child of Tokita and Atsuko. Why would Atsuko's avatar look like that if she didn't have feelings for the only guy with reddish hair in the movie?

Also, the movie is WAY better than the book, which is incredibly homophobic.

Gate

Interesting if old premise. The political intrigue layer on top is nice, though I cannot help but dislike the US being a villain. A very likable protagonist. I especially like how he has all of these military qualifications that he kind of fell into by accident, and not really through skill (though I keep expecting the truth to come out that he's a badass Clark Kenting us all). Looking forward to seeing more.

We get a lot of this in anime because a lot of Japanese people (and South Korean for that matter) don't appreciate hosting a US Military base on their soil, especially when it seems like the US soldiers seem to be nigh immune to prosecution for what they do on liberty. The Atomic bomb thing is... mostly in the past at this point, generally because we've helped rebuild what was destroyed and have been honest and trustworthy allies since, but the Japanese psyche is quite anti-war at this point. They really don't want real soldiers running around.

Of course, Abe is trying to slowly alter that psyche by changing the history books and such, in order to make it possible to change the constitution to have an ACTUAL standing military again.

I thought his hair was brown. I knew he cared for her, but she seems so formal/sterile/cold that her feelings didn't hit me until it was really obvious. I did know that Paprika was an unexpressed version of herself because of the personality differences,
but this also tells me I didn't watch closely enough. I'm going to have to watch it again when I'm not also holding a conversation.

One-Punch Man

In which our hero has found that overwhelming strength is... really, really BORING.

For him. Watching the bad guys freak out when their buddies get taken out with the titular one punch (while our protagonist can barely muster the energy to blink) is funny as all get out.

I've seen some scenes of this. It looks really good.

finished Mermaids Forest what a weird, screwy show. it reminded me of something like highlander/kung-fu plus body horror and treatise of human nature.

Professor Layton and the Last Diva

Damn good Layton story, and its nice seeing the animation without being all pixely and weird. Still have trouble getting used to Luke's new voice but whatevs.

Started reading Black Clover, a sorcery manga where the main character is said to have NO magic potential so logically he'll become Jesus, and wants to be king of the pira-I MEAN-sorcery emperor. Yeah that's the ticket, TOTALLY original! In all serious, it don't look that orful , and it has a FRIENDLY rivalry in it, which is damned refreshing.

Since I got the game, I decided to give the Yokai Watch a look.

It's not stellar writing or anything, but I'll give the show credit; it's damn energetic. Not in the way of Kill la Kill, but stuff is constantly moving in this, and the conversations cram the scene too. It's cute. I'm honestly surprised that with Nintendo trying to downplay the ghost angle, Disney's dub went ahead and said "yeah, they're totally ghosts, they used to be alive and now they're dead," then follows with a scene of a cat that was hit by a car possessing people so it could fight cars. I guess for some reason I expected Disney to go the 4Kids route considering Nintendo of America's position, but nope, they're fine with it.

Not sure if I'm going to keep watching right now. I have no idea how much of the game's story I'll spoil for myself if I do.

This show will spoil the game's story, the same way the Pokemon show spoiled the game's story.

I see Hulu has new episodes of Fairy Tail. I forgot how much this artist likes boobs.
He really really is, one of the reasons why I barely keep up with it. Don't get me wrong its better than most Shonen shows, but it is such a HODGE PODGE of tropes at times. Last story I read was where
one of the guild members pitted the other guild members against each other to test their strength and I was like -JESUS H MORNINGSTAR- aren't there REAL bad guys you can be fighting? Like, that Zaref guy, why aren't we focusing on stopping him? Why are we making a pointless fucking detour to the real plot with the good guys fighting each other because lightning boy is fucking nuts?!

I tried watching Fairy Tail (because redhead with boobs, naturally) but really I couldn't get into it. After a few episodes I stopped... it just feels so... generic? Like it's a story I've read (or show I've watched) a hundred times in a hundred places.

It kind is yeah, the character quirks and designs can keep me interested but holy CRAP is this series trope heavy. Its not like One Piece which focuses on various social constructs and philosophies while interweaving crazy action between it, its almost all action all the time.

I don't know why something like Dragon Ball can do straight up action better than most modern shonen stories I've read, but they lack a certain spark.

I like it. The story is rather generic shonen, but aren't they all? I got into it because Natsu was appealing in that unlike most shonen protagonists, he's intelligent. That little change makes a big difference on the story.

Seven Deadly Sins

Here's my bar graph of the quality of this anime's writing:

it's like the writer sold his soul to the devil for one really good episode.

I saw this on Netflix and thought the art was awful. Really Netflix... this is what you choose to dump money on? Why not something that already has a proven audience? You could have funded a season of something like Deadman Wonderland or The Big O and anime fans everywhere would be praising your name.

started trying to get through Strike Witches, I have no idea what I am watching but after a few episodes it seems cute.
