Video Game News and Miscellany

Holy shit that MP gameplay footage that came out today for Doom was baaad.
"Remember when we made Doom 4, and it was slow and awkward and lost all of the fast, frenetic feeling of the original that everyone loved? Well here's more of that!"

The announcer doesn't fit at all, either. Feels like some boring AI or something instead of a bloodthirsty crazy man like the older arena shooters.

My problem is that it has a sloppy feel.

Whatever; the game's a rental anyway. There are too many solid games coming out this year for me to drop $60 on Doom.

You know, that's a perfectly good reason for a game to fail: that it's okay, but not worth what's being asked to play it. Possibly going F2P would help it, maybe not. But the fact is, not every game is worth spending money on, especially when there's an amplitude of choices but a limit on money and time.

I'm personally starting to wonder if the MMO genre has just had its day and is winding down. There might never be a "wowkiller" because people aren't as interested in that genre as they used to be. I know I, for one, have come to prefer smaller, more story driven multiplayer experiences with people I know to being one of ten thousand random douchenozzle "chosen ones" pinballing around in medieval disneyland waiting for my turn to ride Pirates of the NamedMobSpawnCamp.

Well, somebody has to P even if it's F. Apparently not enough did.
I think the issue stemmed from people not playing/paying much before the change, either. Some games that use the cash shops/ingame-money-for-gametime thing have been doing well (WoW, obviously, but also Blade and Soul), but if you're already hemorrhaging money, employees and sub numbers even a f2p model can't save you forever. Hell, people still pay for EverQuest xpacs year after year, even though it's f2p, but WS just didn't have the installed base to handle a new payment model.

Speaking of EQ, EQNext is officially cancelled.

I Am Setsuna, from Tokyo RPG Factory. Due out in summer, I think.

Very old-school feel, but the graphics and music are gorgeous. Definitely interested.

e: Oh, and it's confirmed for both PS4 and PC.

How far ahead is that in production? It looks nice but combat feels off.

Oh,and System Shock 1 remake has a pre-alpha gameplay trailer... it's impressive... though the combat looks like it needs some work.

That video's from September of last year, which I didn't notice when I posted. I think the game's already out in JP. Here's the first 90 minutes, skip to about 10m30s to get some combat basics:

e: Be sure subtitles are on, there's translations for the dialogue and tutorial stuff.

Yeah I had no idea who they were before this. Now I know they make REALLY shitty games.

I don't know what these people hope to accomplish, especially on the "company impersonation" front. All Jim has to do is contact the ACTUAL company that was being impersonated and ask them if they have ever threatened legal action against ether of these two brothers. If the answer is yes then he has all he needs to fight that charge.

Yeah, I don't get why they're listing that as one of the false accusations. They were very clearly found out to be using other company names in order to release games on Steam. Especially now, when they're listing several games in Greenlight that were originally posted in Greenlight under those other company names.

I am now subscribed to this Jim Sterling person as a result of this video (and the related ones) so... Yay?
Welcome, brother. *bows* Thank God for Jim fucking Sterling, son.[DOUBLEPOST=1458169324,1458169244][/DOUBLEPOST]Also, I've posted this before, but if you have the time, I highly recommend Jim's interview with Robert Romino of Digital Homicide. It's painfully uncomfortable to listen to, especially some of the ridiculous leaps in logic that Robert makes.
