Video Game News and Miscellany

Oh jeez, what they do isn't random censoring to begin with, it's called localizing.
Localizing is changing colloquialisms that would make no sense in English, or adding in pop culture references that make sense to a non-Japanese market.

Censoring is altering outfits, game features and art books because boobs are scary.[DOUBLEPOST=1458357509,1458357396][/DOUBLEPOST]
It sounds like for this sidequest, no matter what you chose, the game treated it as the wrong choice or at least a regrettable mistake. And that's bullshit.
And yeah I guess the idea was no matter which side you chose, the end of the quest had your party thinking they made the wrong decision, which is kind of odd.

The Japanese version of Fallout 3 had a quest changed, removing the option to detonate the Megaton nuke. This was, presumably, out of sensitivity to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I'd say this is an example of good censorship in localization.

Yeah, sorry they slightly desexualized a child and removed the SUPER creepy face petting simulation from a war game.

They did because boobs are scary and not because they don't have to appeal to pedophiles to sell games that aren't mobile outside of Japan.

But Frank!

Xenoblade Chronicles X spoilers (which no one should care about because the story is terrible)
She wasn't a child! She was just a robot built to look exactly like the child whose consciousness was placed inside her, and that makes it totally okay and not pedo-shit!

That's the sort of moonlogic that gives us Poison from Final Fight:

"Wait, maybe it's not cool that the heroes repeatedly beat up a street hooker looking woman."
"What if she's actually a male to female transsexual? Is it acceptable for the players to repeatedly beat her unconscious then?"
"Yes, I see nothing wrong with that."
"Excellent. Now, bring out the loli-bots so we may celebrate, my fellow moon people!"

But God forbid they change any of it when bringing it west, else the GameFAQs anti-censorship brigade gets on the boo hoo choo choo.

EDIT: Not saying Cynicism is acting that way; he's just stating disagreement. The kind of tantrums I've seen on the 3DS GameFAQs board over Nintendo's localizing is a form of wretched shit we don't have on this forum since Mav left.

Or how about that ancient dragon in human form in FE:A, eh? EH?

I totally get aging up characters, and I was pretty surprised to see Nowi for the first time in what's practically lingerie. In cases like that and the Xenoblade character, changing the age or costume a little makes sense.

I dunno, I think it's just the idea of things like concept art being removed from books that really bothers me more than anything. The rest has been happening long enough in some way or another that it's just part of playing games in NA and isn't a big deal, I suppose.

My body is (literally) ready for this. Maybe I crippled myself on purpose.

(Side note, as I posted this in the Random Video Game Crap thread as well)

Dark Souls 3, without ANY discounts, is cheaper than the Fallout 4 season pass.

That is fucking bonkers.

I've heard prices are really nuts in Canada in general. Friends of mine wanted to re-sub to FFXIV but in Canadian dollary-doos it's like 22 bucks a month as opposed to the 15 we pay here.

That's fine from conversion rate standards. I'm just saying some nebulous DLC pass being more expensive than a game like Dark Souls is crazy to me.

Funny enough when the Canadian dollar was better than the American one, I don't recall receiving any rebates.

This would be more noteworthy if he didn't hate everything that wasn't Portal. ;)
I don't like the Division. I didn't even buy it, it was a gift from a friend because he wanted to play together, so I was all for it. Free game! It's just kinda boring.

My brother's pretty hooked on it, but then he was also hooked on Destiny. I think he just enjoys the shooter-RPG-loot treadmill games.
I actually liked Destiny, though I only played it after they had already released The Taken King, which I understand fixed a lot of the problems that people had with the game at launch. I can enjoy a looter shooter if the gameplay is fun, and Destiny at least had fun skills and weapons and a variety of enemy types to fight. The Division's weapons all feel the same, because there's only so many ways you can portray different types of machine gun, and the enemies are all just dudes with guns. But having everything look like realistic near future military stuff (albeit a military run by beanie wearing hobos) would work if the gameplay matched. But the RPGness of it throws all of that out the window when all of the enemies, who are also beanie wearing hobos, are complete bullet sponges that you need to unload clip after clip into before they go down. This didn't bother me in Destiny because they were big armored monsters, aliens, and robots. In The Division, the armor they're wearing is a puffy jacket.

I know at one point the RT guys were going through The Taken King, and basically all agreed that Destiny and Grand Theft Auto 5 were the most improved games since launch. I don't have a system that can play Destiny, and those of you who've had the misfortune of gaming with me knows my abysmal skill level at FPS games, but I have to admit, Destiny looks like it can be a lot of fun to actually play. And as soon as I get a PC that can play GTA V, I consider that to be a necessary purchase.

100 Atari games coming to Steam

A single bundle called Atari Vault, and not just simple emulation, they're getting online multiplayer, leaderboards, Steam controller support, etc. No mention of if these are the 2600 versions, or the arcade, or what.

Considering that you can already play Atari games in your browser, this collection is going to have to be cheap, or bring more to the table.
Atari Vault is out now, and it's $20 ($17 with an intial 15% discount). While it's nice to see that they've got both 2600 and Arcade versions of several titles, the $20 price rules out a curiosity purchase, for me.

Earthbound is out on New 3DS!

Bought it for my wife, who's never played it. Still on the fence if I'm going to double-dip for myself since I'm already in Scaraba on the Wii U. On the other hand, if it had come out for handheld before, I would've finished it by now.

I'll probably snag it once I finish out FE Fates. I haven't even bought the Revelations path yet, and I'm still working on Hoshido (haven't started Nohr yet).

Dude, set her up on a SNES Emulator to play 2 and 3.

Mother 1's on NES, Earthbound's on SNES, and Mother 3 is on GBA, so ... I don't know what you mean? If you mean, Final Fantasy, she's got handheld versions of both, hasn't finished them. She didn't like them as much as we do.
