Movie News & Miscellany

Maybe that's what the end of Birdman meant. Before his daughter entered the room he donned the Vulture suit and flew out the window to be in Spider-Man.

Ehhhhhh, if the sound is turned off, I give zero shits. If they have text sounds constantly going off, then I'd rage.

I say this as a parent who gets trapped watching the worst movies ever.

I'd rather have texter sounds going off than seeing the bright phone screens in my peripheral vision in a dark theater. I don't really care about these as long as they're labeled for adults/non-morons to avoid. If you wanna pay $20 to half pay attention to a movie, you should be able to do that.

I want to pay $20 to enjoy a movie in a high quality dark, environment without people's phones going off, light distracting me from the film and people trying to outstanding the movie with their comments. Shouldn't I be able to that?

Yes. If I understand correctly, they are creating separate environments for people who want texting and people who don't, allowing audiences to choose for thrmselves. I don't see a problem with the idea, though I doubt it will keep people from being selfish assholes in theaters where it is supposed to stay dark and quiet.

I bet I know what will nix this though...

It's hard to tell apart somebody who is texting a lot from somebody who is recording the movie on their phone's camera.

If I think I will be filled with the urge to look at my phone (read: everytime I get suckered into taking my daughter to the movies), I generally sit in the back corner anyways. But I view this in general as less egregious than people who do things like talk through the movie, or don't turn alerts off.

I told my girlfriend about the AMC news story. We had this conversation:

Me: To which I say NOPE! Nope nope nope nope nooooope!
Her: What if someone dragged you to a chick flick?
Me: *long pause* ...you know, on the other hand...

I don't think I would mind it, honestly. I almost exclusively go to the Flix Brewhouse now, which has servers coming in constantly with food or beers, and a little light you activate to call them over to you for a refill, which is way brighter then a cellphone screen. It has allowed me to be desensitized to most distractions.

One article on this supported the idea, saying, "Some people just can't stop texting." Well you know what, some people got motormouths, but we still tell them to shut up or hit the road.

I really don't see this drawing in more people to the theater. The same article characterized this as a revolutionary step that will increase theater profits by immense proportions, as if the theater auditorium will become the only place you can text. I probably had the misfortune of reading an article written by an idiot, but it colored this idea in the dumbest light.

In other news, The Jungle Book is getting solid reviews. I want to make a point of going to more movies this year, but it's hard to make myself head out and pay ticket prices unless it's something I'm really excited about, which means I just miss movies I actually wanted to see.

Oh man, if only the theater allowed texting, surely that would motivate me to head out there this weekend when I otherwise might not. :awesome:

If theaters allowed texting, I could post to HF a running commentary of whatever bad movie I'm watching at the time.

Actually, what am I saying, I'm in Taiwan and we don't kick people out for texting here (AFAIK). I can commentate as much as I want already!

Some time back, I informally kickstarted among my friends the cost of a midnight ticket to see DISASTER MOVIE with the expectation that I write a very detailed review. I took in one of those note pads like reporters use and a pen and wrote down all the terrible, unfunny shit in the movie. Related: writing in the dark is hard and I could barely read my own scrawling. But I still have that notepad, and every time I look at parts of it I laugh heartily.

Good. In fact, I'm of the opinion that theaters should be doing more to clamp down on phone use during movies.
You need to use your phone that badly? Then take it out to the hallway!
