Rant VIII: The Reckoning

Yeah, I'm okay. Just sad because it's grey out and mom's home from the hospital so that stress is off but the house isn't in the shape I wanted it to be in when she got home so I'm feeling disappointed in myself plus saturday my bitch of a sister is coming to visit and she'll just going to ream us out for not taking good enough care of ourselves and I don't fucking need it. I just kind of want to lay down, cry, and then take my mind off for a while and play some video games with a friend.

That's what I wanted to say when she asked how I was doing.

I typed all that out, then deleted it, and put "I'm fine."

I'm not the only one in the neighborhood without power, so I've got that going for me, which is nice.

I'm still terrified of what may happen if they reenergize the neighborhood without checking the house out first.

considering it doesnt look like your service lines were touched and your mast is still fed correctly, other then a quick check to make sure none of the lines got nicked you look good.

I'm nervous because there was significant arcing and sparking outside near the meter box before the power went out completely. But as that was during the worst of the storm and the gutter is now loose, it may have been the gutter contacting the line.

you are not wrong to have it looked at, but other than minor repairs, it looks like you should be ok to have power restored.

I can't tell if the leaning of the house is due to the tree or to barrel distortion.

And now possibly my other uncle, his brother. He has a serious blood infection and they don't know if he'll make it. The hell.

Cats have food and fresh water, and management gave me a room at work. So I'm okay even though power isn't back yet at the house.

Some dickbag left a shopping cart right by my car in the parking lot. Usually not a big deal, except apparently the cart was being held in place by my car. When I backed out, the cart started moving, which I didn't see since I was checking behind me. Slammed into my car and left a bunch of dents and paint on my door

In that vein, when my girlfriend was exiting the garage this morning, someone ran right behind her, and, frightened/startled, she slammed into the side of the garage door. Huzzah.

Getting the tree off the house is a separate expense from cutting it up and taking it away as far as the insurance company is concerned. Getting it off the house is counted under total damage, with a $500 deductible. Hauling it off is covered for the first $500. We pay anything over.

My sister has a lead on a tree removal service that we used for prior work on another tree. Power was still out as of about 90 minutes ago. ETA for restoration about 8pm TOMORROW. :(

Nothing is as thoroughly unsatisfying as helping someone else and then suffering for it.

If it's a nice wood, like oak or maple, you might call around to local woodworking groups and companies. Ask them if they know any woodworkers interested in being paid to cut it up and haul it away. You might be able to get someone to do it for under $500.

If it's not a great wood then for $500 you can get a cheap chainsaw and log splitter, then set it by the road with a sign, $50 per cord, it'll be gone pretty quick, and you might be able to cover your $500 deductible. It's not a small amount of work, though.

Looks like it's big enough that a nice size slab would make a fantastic tabletop.

AFAIK, this was a linden tree, aka basswood. It was not a particularly healthy tree at the end. Large branches would fall onto the driveway on windy or stormy days, so the driveway rarely got used.

That's a lower end hardwood, but favored for carving and turning. It's worth a shot calling around - as poor a condition as it may have been for your purposes, a woodworker might find great value.

On the other hand, I expect many woodmills in your area are inundated with such requests...

The problem with doing it yourself is that a crew will have at best a crane, or at worst chains to prevent further damage to your house. That's going to be harder to do on your own. When you cut a piece, it's got to go somewhere, and the remainder may shift. All while you're wielding a whirling blade of death.

The tree guy, one we've worked with before, just happened to be driving down our street when I called. Got an estimate already. $2200 to get the tree off of the house, and then $800 to cut up and haul away.

The way the insurance works, we're responsible for the first $500 of getting the tree off the house as our total damage deductible, and then the last $300 of hauling it away.

So basically an $800 out of pocket expense. so it goes.

Uncle number two seems to be pulling through. His temperature is down, so hopefully he can kick the infection. There is a chance he may lose a leg though. We'll see.

Remember when I said we'd only be on the hook for $800 to get the tree off the house and taken away? Try the full $3200. I haven't heard back from the insurance guy about how they want to deal with billing, but according to the tree service, we pay it all, then the insurance company cuts a check.

Unless the insurance says differently, that tree may be there for a while.

Anyway, I have to work tonight, so I'm going to bed now.

Yeah nah don't want an AC unit in the window to make the front of the house look ugly, let's just uproot the dude with Asperger's to a new room instead, that won't fuck with his head at all. Not like he's spent the last 6 months finally putting the room together in a way that's comfortable.

Going on vacation without telling your client while there's still a tree leaning on their house is a dick move. It took a day without hearing a word about our claim to finally find that out. Estimate has been forwarded to the new adjuster, and they have been in voicemail contact with the tree service, so I've got that going for me, which is nice.

Still don't know if I'm on the hook for the full $3200 with reimbursement, or just the $800 the insurance doesn't cover.

And the tree is still here.

Super duper broke. Not sure how we're going to make it to payday. Only worried about gas and food. And it's our own fault. We spent some money that we normally wouldn't have, and then an unexpected expense came up and fucked us. Once we got to payday on the 1st we'll be fine, but it's going to be a hungry 2 weeks.
