What, no Pokemon Go thread?

New update out. Supposedly has a sightings feature that works differently than tracking did. Among other things.

Don't get too excited. They are 'currently testing a variation of the Nearby Pokemon feature with a subset of users.' Not exactly a full roll out.

I got a curveball and "Great throw" bonus both on a catch for the first time ever. In all previous version (at least one the ones that gave you any bonus at all), a nice/good/great/excellent throw would overwrite the curveball bonus and you'd lose out on the extra 10 xp

Didn't know about the update until a few minutes ago, but a much better day for new stuff today.
Caught just after I left work, first I've seen in the wild.

Hatched from a 5k egg I started this morning. My phone usually sits on a shelf while at work, so my Fitbit steps don't work toward my hatching most of the time.

Caught just as we left the grocery store this evening.

There's a Pokestop that's juuuust out of range of my desk at work. People keep dropping lures at that Pokestop too.

I wonder if I can request a transfer to another department.

I updated and have the "Sightings" feature. Is this what was going out to a small subset?
No, everyone got that - and it actually works.
The small subset is getting a new version of "Nearby" to go along with the Sightings.[DOUBLEPOST=1470765392,1470764931][/DOUBLEPOST]To expand further (I dislike getting ninja'd, why do you ask? :p):

Sightings refresh every 10 seconds, and only show Pokémon within about 200 meters. It groups Pokémon together, so if there's 7 Pidgeys nearby, it'll only show you one. No direction, but given the relatively small area, you can sort of hunt around in an area (or search them out accurately if your city has a checkersboard pattern of streets). So far, it's a LOT more precise/correct than "Nearby" was. Any Pokémon you see, you can actually find in the area.
The nexw nearby version supposedly links Pokémon to their nearest Pokéstop - as in, "a pidgey was seen near the Korea War Monument". I'm not sure how useful/fun that'll be to use in the middle of nowhere with only 2 stops in town, but that might work in a bigger city.

Fluffy, Fluffy, Fluffy and the Fluffies that didn't see combat helped me take a gym! It was a great day for Team Mystic.
There's too many good nights for Team Mystic. All gyms in my neighborhood are tending to Blue, all Blue, all the time. With a "lowest" Pokémon of 1500+, meaning I can't actually do anything there.

Depends. You can take them down a bit at a time. Gyms have "thresholds" to how many pokemon get to defend it, and it's every 2000. So let's say a gym is at 6550 prestige, with a 1000, 1500, and 2000 on it of varying types. Now if you have a couple of fairly uber sets, you MAY be able to take it all down at once, taking the gym all at once.

But there's another option: wear it down.

If you have enough revives/potions, you can take it down over time. As long as your 6 "challenging" pokemon can take down the LOWEST ONE, then you drain prestige from the Gym, and gyms can only hold 1 pokemon for every 2000 prestige. And as long as you kill ONE of the guardians, it loses prestige. So the first time you spend all 6 of your "best" to kill the 1000 guy, and 4 go down, but two survive and are killed by the 1500 guy. But the prestige of the gym just went down by 200 (or something). So revive your guys, and kill again! Do it until the prestige is under 6000. And then look at the gym again: the lowest pokemon will be gone. It will only have two defenders, because it won't have enough prestige.

Rinse and repeat. As long as your 6 can kill ONE, and you have enough potions/revives, you can take down a gym. It's a lot EASIER if you kill all in one stretch, as that auto-kills the whole gym, but it's not mandatory to do it that way.

As long as your 6 can kill ONE,
I've faced off against gyms where my 6 couldn't kill even the first 1. And I've also had it be the case where I beat one, healed up my team, and came back to found the gym more powerful than when I started.

Also, I'm blue myself, so I don't get 6 pokemon, just one. And raising the prestige enough to put in one extra is a heck of a lot harder an lowering it, if the first one's a cp1500 vaporeon or the like.

That wasn't clear in your OP. OK then, you have problems then.

And also, Go Team Mystic!

I apologize in advance: Pokemon is a game for all ages and shouldn't be sullied for children, who have to grow up fast enough as it is.

That being said:
Lickitung can stop by my bedroom! :unibrow:

Have I mentioned my localized gigantism around here before? :zoid:

New update is a piece of shit. Last update the system would refresh ever ten seconds. Now it doesn't again. I have to restart the app to make it see pokemon in the area. Fucking fail, Niantic.

So, I do a lot of gym busting in my town. The gyms change color daily, and I do my part to keep them blue. The problem: I can't keep up with the amount of potions that takes bringing back my top notch guys. So here are my strategies to mitigate that problem:

  • Use a lot of pidgeottos and other stuff I'm going to transfer anyway. The professor will give you a candy whether or not the 'mon has 1 hp or 100. Since I always carry a lot of low level fluff around for later evolution, I can use this strategy to really wear down a gym before bringing out the big guns.
  • Revives. Oh my lord, revives. I used to get so many of these, I'd throw them away 20 or 30 at a time. But now, if I have a pokemon at half health or below, I'll use them in gyms until they faint. Revives bring them back to 50% hit points. So much better than wasting healing potions on every single pokemon.

So, I get a lot of water pokemon near my house. Horsea, goldeen, that kind of thing. I never really thought about it til I showed my phone to a guy from work and he was wondering where I got them all.

It turns out we have a 'lake' two blocks away. It's really just a marshy mosquito breeding depression in the earth that never really holds more than an inch or two of water. But I guess it's good enough for Pokemon Go to continually spawn water creatures near me.
