Movie News & Miscellany

Thanks for linking that, I forgot that I wanted to watch it later and it fell of my radar.
A bit disappointed I didn't see any Rudolph, though.

To be fair, it's called the evolution of stop-motion and memorable as they are, from an animation standpoint those Rankin-Bass productions were a step backward.

I think we can agree that the years 1977-1980 showed quite a bit of improvement, though.

I'm gonna quote evilmike's video post since we're discussing it and it had the misfortune of being the last post on that page:

I'd have to know which movies you're referring to as progression for those years. There's a few time jumps in there--they skip from Gulliver's Travels (1933) to The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms (1953), and while there wasn't a ton of stop-motion in the 40s, I'd consider Mighty Joe Young to be a progression point. I'm surprised they found stuff to fill the gap between Clash of the Titans and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

But we just watched Rudolph, When Santa Claus Comes to Town, Jack Frost, and a few others, and the stop-motion was sometimes what you'd expect from the time period, other times characters just split off from where they were and into where they go. I don't know if you've watched The Little Drummer Boy, but the animation's easily the worst there (though it doesn't help that it's been so poorly preserved).

Does anyone know, did they actually do stop-motion for the game table in The Force Awakens? I feel like I heard they had before, but then I was surprised to see it in that compilation.[DOUBLEPOST=1472939523,1472939351][/DOUBLEPOST]Okay, Wikipedia has a list.

I've not seen all of those for that time period. Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger had some weak stop-motion in some scenes, but I remember the stuff with the prince who was turned into a baboon being really impressive. I sadly never got to see Planet of Dinosaurs, but I have seen snippets of it and the stop-motion was really impressive from what I remember.

EDIT: Watched the Rifftrax trailer for Planet of Dinosaurs (so yay, a way to watch the movie where I get to see the stop-motion, and also be entertained by comedy). That Stegosaurus moves awkwardly, but the carnivore is pretty smooth.

1977-1980 was a specific reference to the time between Star Wars (1977) and The Empire Strikes Back (1980).

Looking again at the list, I realize I've also seen Laserblast (thanks, MST3k).

I'm guessing you meant ILM got better at it? Because earlier in the day I thought you meant that they skipped movies you felt were integral to the process.

There are two major omissions. The first is Mighty Joe Young. Not only is it a solid film which won the Academy Award for Special Effects and was a precursor to the stop motion monster effects that were so prominent in the decade that followed, it is the first feature film that Ray Harryhausen worked on.

The second is from Rankin-Bass. However, it isn't Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, which was a television production. It's Mad Monster Party? from 1967.

It's not the best animation, but it should be included because it's one of the first feature films to treated stop motion as a medium of animation rather than a special effect. Tim Burton even recognizes it as a direct antecedent to The Nightmare Before Christmas. (Goodreads)

Warner Bros have used the DMCA to ask Google to stop linking to over 4 million infringing websites this year. Or rather over 4 million allegedly infringing websites. Torrent Freak have been examining the DMCA takedown requests and have found some interesting websites on the list.

Like the movies IMDB pages. That's factual non-copyrightable information.

Or online stores selling legal copies of the movies. You realise if we can't get your movies legitimately we kinda have to pirate?

Or even their own official pages for their own movies. Yes that's right Warner Brothers believe that Warner Brothers are infringing on Warner Brothers intellectual property, and want Google to stop linking to Warner Brothers dastardly copyright infringing websites!

A secret ploy to take down Rotten Tomatoes for being meanies about the DC movies!

I love this news so much, I want to marry it and have seven children with it.

I'm sorry, those children have been stricken with a DMCA takedown by WB
Ha! Joke's on them. I named each kid after major companies: Nintendo, EA, Sony, Microsoft, Disney, McDonald's, and Ubisoft. So WB will have to fight their claim with those companies. I'm going the Jim Sterling route in naming my kids.

This is nothing new, and it's what happens when you let a computer do your lawyering for you.

Kate Beckinsale announced that she's doing another Underworld movie. I wonder if Selene will be trading her latex catsuit in for a pantomime horse costume at some point in this one.

Before I get 3 "I need this explained to me" ratings, Kate Beckinsale takes a pantomime horse costume with her when she travels. She has done for years. On days off from shooting, she will occasionally put on the horse costume and gallop around the hotel.

Kate Beckinsale likes dressing up as a horse. I mean, that's all you need to know, innit?

Also, I haven't seen many of her films (for example, I've never seen any Underworld movie) so I hadn't realized before today what a lovely voice she has.

SHIN. GODZILLA. Playing at a distant theater, yes, but also now playing in the one down the street from my job :D.

Already bought my ticket. I can't wait! ... but I'll have to, because it's still over a month from now.

Where do you find locations? I've never seen a Japanese Godzilla movie but I just love that design of the monster.

Fandango + movie, then zip code. But evilmike is right about not all locations being listed yet. By Saturday it should all be set in stone. All screenings seem to be for the second week of October.

The theater near my job is only playing it the one time, one night. I've never been to a screening this limited, so I have no idea if it'll be a big crowd or if I'll be the only one in the theater.
