[Rant] Minor Rant III: For a Few Hollers More

Going on 2 weeks without cable/internet at my house now. Admittedly, the first 6 days of that were without power, so it was a moot point, but still.

And Comcast is insisting that there's not an area outage, and that it must be equipment-related.

*deeeeeeeeeeeep sigh, whilst rubbing the bridge of my nose*

I've been particularly on edge these last couple weeks, and now I'm finally allowed to talk about why - ownership decided to flip the format of my station from sports to classic rock, which went live today at 1pm. I'm still its Operations Director, and we don't have a program director because we're getting a canned format from Westwood One.

There's already a classic rock AND a classic hits station in this market. I don't understand how this is supposed to pull ratings when we have no local presence/live DJs. I was not consulted in the decision making process, though - my job's just to keep the automation automating.

It's gonna be a lot of headaches in the transition period for the next couple months. Probably working on a real good ulcer.

They're changing formats so often, it's a wonder the have anyone listening at all.

I'll never understand radio.

Yeah, we went a whole 18 months this time. Woo. I've worked here for 13 years, and this station has gone through 5 revamps/format changes in that time. Back in 03 it was Alternative Rock, then went hard rock, then went Jack FM, then went back to rock, then ESPN radio, and now classic rock. Oigh.

So last saturday, my car wouldn't start. Friend came over and we worked out that the battery had gone flat. So, went and got a new one. Working fine.

Today I have a flat tire. To make it worse, the lug nuts are on so tight I can't take them off manually.  Luckily, I have an emergency pump and so inflated the tire enough to get my car down to a tire shop close to my work that has good ratings on most of the sites I looked at.

Edit: Well, good news, tire shop was able to fix it quickly and they didn't even charge me anything for it.

Update on my (and most of Mid-Southside Savannah) cable woes. Comcast tech came out today (even though we explained to the terribly insistent Indian man from the call center that we didn't need a tech, we needed an answer to the outage and an ETA. I MAY have been more abrasive than necessary, due to having been woken up from night shift sleep).

Tech advised us that Comcast didn't have the necessary equipment to fix the problem at this time, but it should be getting worked on as of the 23rd, with an ESTIMATED resolution by the 24th.

And I'm sitting here, bemoaning the fact that both Overwatch AND World of Warships are running month-long events, and I'm missing out on them.

1st world problem, to be sure, but still... At least they're not gonna charge us for the down time.

Our power has been out for less than an hour and my daughter just threatened to eat me.
YOU FOOL! You thought you could calm them...keep them orderly...but now when all of your "society" and "infrastructure" have fallen away their true form has been revealed. THE HOBO CAN NOT BE CONTAINED ANY LONGER!

Why would a power outage bother a hobo?

I've found Newegg frustrating to use ever since they had partnered sellers, meaning that the search for some items resulted in dozens upon dozens of nearly identical listings, all with varying degrees of accuracy in their descriptions. Not that it's better on other sites, but that used to be one of the major advantages of Newegg over Amazon, not having to wade through as much crap in search results.

My mom just linked me to this article, because she's been sure that LED lights are somehow bad. It's chock-full of technobabble, like saying that "natural" lights are "black body radiators". There are no scientific studies, just a whole bunch of wild claims about how near-infrared radiation is somehow essential to health, and that the flicker of backlights on computer screens is going to kill us all. (And, yet, OLEDs are somehow going to save us).

I mean, nevermind that actual scientific studies have found that near-infrared light may cause cataracts, or that any workplace safety group worth it's salt knows that strong infrared radiation is actually more dangerous when you can't immediately feel the heat from it.

And the most frustrating part of it all, is that because she was already convinced that LEDs are dangerous (and has them confused with compact fluorescents because she thought they were chemically hazardous), she's going to continue to resist buying LED lights, and insist that my use of anything technological is a problem, because she fully buys into her own bias, and will take the word of a snake-oil article that can easily be proven to be inaccurate, simply because it backs what she wants to be true.

Today is my wife's birthday. No I didn't forget it, even though the earrings that I ordered to go with her two necklaces didn't come in on time.

Her oldest aunt (105, born in 1911) passed away this past Wednesday, graveside services were this afternoon. So we planned to go to lunch and then drive over to the funeral. On the way to lunch, we got the call that her closest aunt (87) passed away. Not a good day overall. The second aunt's funeral will probably be Wednesday, and we get to drive a couple of hours on Thursday to get our daughter to an oral surgeon in Huntsville. So this week is gonna be all chewed up from the "normal" routine that we have.

Yeah, it's starting to get that way with my family - though, thank God, I haven't buried any of my direct relative aunts/uncles yet.

Of course, it's my 23rd anniversary today - but it's also the 16th anniversary of my stepmother passing away. I didn't exactly get along with my stepmother. She mellowed after being diagnosed with cancer, but this always was that one sticking point for me.

My dad has always pointed out to me that she actually took her last breath on the 22nd, but the coroner didn't show up to sign the papers until after midnight. Little comfort, though.

Well, their primary claim, that LEDs don't contain enough infrared A and are therefore not as good for you as incandescent, is utter poppycock.

Infrared A damages your skin and eyes, and along with ultraviolet light is one of the things that are bad for you:

http://link.springer.com/referenceworkentry/10.1007/978-3-540-89656-2_42#page-1

I'm sure if I read through the whole ball of junk that article is trying to sell I'd find a lot more wrong with it, but the entire thing is rubbish. Of course you know that, and these articles probably won't convince her, but it's her money - if she wants to spend the earth's resources to heat her house and provide a pitiful amount of light then who am I to suggest otherwise?

i sell this shit for a living, other than places that get super hot or super cold the newest LED bulbs are amazing. they even developed LED filament bulbs that look like the old bulbs for people like his mother.

I am waiting on two specialist appointments. New ones. My doctor feels that both are urgent and felt one was urgent in early August!

Yet here we are and I haven't heard from either :(

I was told that I'd have a client coming in to pay and record a tag for a commercial, he's a guy running for city council here. He'd already had a spanish spot produced here previously, and this was to run in english on our urban station. But the guy showed up without a script, not knowing how much his check was supposed to be for, anything. Completely unprepared. So he called his campaign manager on his cell phone in our lobby and railed on the guy with extensive profanities, talking about how he was too busy and didn't have time for all this.

Doofus isn't even a city councilman and already he's got a big fuckin' head. I don't think he'll be getting my vote.

So, to update:
Funeral Sunday, went well, it was mostly happy memories for everyone, she will be missed though.
Funeral Wednesday, also went well. Actually had everyone from the family able to be there, with one exception (will explain in a moment) but a great gathering of the family with lots of happy memories.
Today (Thursday), drove to Huntsville to get the daughter to see an oral surgeon, doctor looks a x-rays from local dentist, takes a couple of others, puts off the surgery. Seems that the roots from one of her wisdom teeth are entangled with the main nerve for that side of her jaw. Gotta get a CT scan and try again later.

I did not mention in the original post that the wife of the cousin that could not make it to the Wednesday funeral was involved in a single car accident on Friday evening. Didn't realize that it was a serious as it was until after the funeral on Sunday. She apparently had a stroke while driving, went off the road at highway speed, hit a culvert and went airborne. Her car ended up facing the way that she came from, the engine was sitting 10 feet in front of the car. She didn't have a scratch on her. Unfortunately the seat belt held her in place, she had massive internal injuries in the abdomen. Took over 5 units of blood just to get her stabilized. Tuesday they were able to transfer her to Houston, they couldn't do anything to save her. She passed away just before the start of the funeral on Wednesday. Her funeral is on Saturday.

So, just from one side of my wife's family we will have 3 funerals in 7 days. Things aren't supposed to go this way.

The other grad students in my department have thrown a Halloween party every year since I've been here. It was scheduled for the Friday night before Halloween. So I cobbled a Punisher costume together. I even worked out for two months to get into superhero shape.

A couple weeks before the party, the co-hosts put up a Facebook post confirming the event. Life went on as usual. The day of the party, I baked triple fudge brownies. Then I got dressed up and went to their house. I knew something was awry when there weren't any cars parked outside. All the lights were off too. I knocked on the door and heard the dog messing around and that was it. THEN I got a text from one of my friends saying that the party was canceled at the last second. No explanation, just that it was off. I wasn't the last to know either; some other friends were disappointed too.

Three explanations I can think of:

1. There was an emergency with one or both of the co-hosts.

2. Seeing as how they're grad students, they decided they had to write or grade all weekend.

3. They went to a bar for just one round and it got away from them.

Welp. My Nextbook is essentially a brick.

The SystemUI got borked when I tried to use a touchscreen calibration app to fix an annoying issue of not recognizing screen taps.

Now, I can't even type on the damn thing.

Can you get to the BIOS, and/or force boot to safe mode?
