[Rant] Minor Rant III: For a Few Hollers More

I have this incredible knack of "discovering" bands right after they finished playing a concert in my home town. Earlier this year it was Thrice. I discovered their music in December and they were in Omaha at a small venue (not sold out with a meet & greet after) in November.

Today someone told me about a Pink Floyd tribute band called Brit Floyd. Holy fucking shit these guys are fucking AMAZING! And they were in town Saturday. I was doing nothing and could have gone. FUCK!

Hurm. The photography studio hired for Mud Hero posted their pics. There's an option to search by your number (17451 for me), but that only gives me less than half a dozen pictures, and only for one event. I know for certain they took more of me because I heard the camera make snapping noises or the photographer gave me a nod a thumbs up.

If anyone wants to help scour the pictures, here's the link.

Yesterday was a regional holiday. I had the day off, because, well fuck you guys it's in my contract. Our subcontractors are Dutch and Walloon, so they don't have the day off, obviously. So now I'm back in the office and there's a mountain of issues and problems and miscommunications and I'm sitting here going URGH GOD WHY CANT YOU GUYS BEHAVE.

Seriously, I've been here less than 6 months. I don't consider my job all that essential or even useful. Yet on days I'm not here things go right down to shit. How did they do things before I got here?!

I am so fucking stressed right now. The appraisal report is due back any day (and no later than Friday), and all of the financial paperwork has been submitted to underwriting for a final review. This deal could close within two weeks. Or it could still go completely tits up for any number of reasons. Or for no apparent reason. Right now, my responsibilities basically consist of not spending money, paying any bill that shows up immediately, and occasionally making dinner. Unless I have to run an errand - all of which I do as early in the morning as possible - I spend most of my time at least mildly medicated sedated, and I'm still not sure if I'm going to survive to the end of this deal.

Edit: Feeling slightly better, one of the concerns we've had is that my wife's job hasn't felt terribly stable to her due to some re-orgs being done in her direct chain of command and her boss seeming to be hanging some info over her head that she was worried was the dissolution of her department. Turns out her boss' deal was entirely personal and my wife's job is in no way in danger currently.

We get a subtitling translation case. To produce translated subtitles, it is necessary to transcribe the spoken audio of the video first. The video includes the line "... this injection works similarly to a depo shot..."

The transcriber, who is presumably male, wrote down "depot shot".

The translator, having found nothing wrong with the idea of a "depot shot", translates it into a Chinese sentence that would probably be back-translated as "this injection works as well as a warehouse full of injections".

Client gets mad.

So....Our billing is (mostly) done based on a n excel sheet we have lying around (everyone in accounting can now have a heart attack), which my boss supposedly (can you feel where I'm going with this?) kept up to date. He's now asked me to slowly take it over and start updating it myself.
So he sent me the version of June and asked me to update it with clients that started up in July.
...Except there's not a single client in there that started after mid-March.
So I asked him if he sent me the April version instead othe June version by mistake.
Nope.
We haven't billed a single client who's been started up since mid-March. Considering we mostly work temporary jobs in construction, so there's a constant coming and going of short-term clients, that's....over 20% of our cash flow.
Yeah, ummmm....Sure I can fix this. But this shouldn't have frickin' happened. FFS, does nobody check these things? Some of our clients are going to get "surprise" bills for 4 or 5 months of service in one go. They'll be really happy about that.

For someone who gives other people hell for sending a report 2 minutes late, he sure isn't all that punctual himself.

Well, our appraisal report is in and the property appraised slightly above our offer, so that's good. It is contingent upon some repairs, but we already knew about them (though we thought some of them had already been addressed before the appraisal was due to be done, so that was a bit of a shock). At this point, the deal is more likely to go through than it is to fail, but we do still have to get the seller to agree to the repairs, get the re-appraisal scheduled, and etc.; hopefully before the 4th when our rate lock expires (it's not gonna happen). Our agent is going over the list of conditions with the seller's agent today, but we probably won't hear anything back until Sunday, because the seller lives in the UK. So why is this over here, instead of in a more positive thread? Our agent is not sounding terribly positive... or hopeful. We have an additional month to close the deal in since we had to go to a month-to-month lease, and I'm not sure she knows that, but she did not sound like she expected this to go through smoothly. And I'm waiting to hear from her today to see how the meeting went and what kind of a feel she got from the seller's agent before I divulge just how fraught her tone was to my wife. Oh, and I seem to be developing a tendon injury in my right elbow, just by typing. But, whatever. Memory Loss™ kicks ass.

For crapping out loud, stop piling more work on me, I'm already performing miracles for the company, asking me to do more in less time is exactly the kind of situation that leads to angry client feedback.

"We asked for a technical document translation, but what we got back just said 'fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck' over and over again."

Well, we're still stressing about this house deal, but now my wife and I are getting ticked off too. This entire thing is hanging on the existence of this ridiculous, unpermitted, plywood sided storage shed that someone tacked on to the back of the garage at some point. It would cost all of about $50 to tear it apart and haul the remains away. The back of the garage and side of the house "inside" the storage shed both have exterior siding, have been painted recently, and are thoroughly up to code. The shed adds no value to the property (according to the appraiser, the home inspector, and even the seller's agent), removing it wouldn't decrease the value of the property, and actually, since no loan will appraise out without it being removed, if the seller doesn't get rid of the damn thing he'll only ever be able to sell to a cash buyer; and cash buyers in Port Orford aren't buying 1971 homes that look exactly like manufactured homes from the outside, have the same layout inside as a manufactured home, but just happen to be stick built - they're buying the 1930s millworker cabins and restoring those. Hopefully the seller is feeling a bit more reasonable this week than he was two weeks ago when his agent first asked for permission to take the shed down (first time on our deal, apparently this thing has been a sticking point before), and he wouldn't hear of it because "what if the deal doesn't go through?" Well, now the main thing that would cause this deal not to go through is that stupid shed! What could possibly be so important about a 50 sqft plywood-walled shed? Who the hell is buried under it?!

You are getting more work because of the miracles you keep pulling off. Every job/boss I've ever known will identify the best and brightest they have working for them, and then mercilessly exploit them to a breaking point by giving them more and more work to do. It won't stop until you fail, quit, or tell them no.

Who the F doesn't show up for a contract sighning and doesn't even bother to inform anyone or cancel?
I take a day off, go to the agency to sign the lease for my apartment, and the would-be tenant simply...doesn't show up? Dude, you're the one who was in such a hurry and wanted in ASAP this motnh right now OMG but you don't show up? And don't even bother to let anyone know, or answer your phone? I'm tempted to keep looking for a new tenant, you know.

My job can do some bullshit to me sometimes. I'm not a manager, but I have all the responsibility and power of management and none of the pay. I use to work 4 12s then they changed me to 5 10s so that I could be there all weekday. I work straight nights btw. Well the crews usually fall asleep when they get done working (and that's ok as long as they don't get caught by a different company). Well at 4AM is when the managers for the other company come to work, so I go into the break room and turn on the lights, and they stay on until I leave at 4:45. I got a text at 5:20 asking my why they were sleeping in the other room because they got caught with the lights off. Like WTF people, I can't control what the other people do AFTER I leave. if you want me there to watch them the whole time then pay me to work 12 hours, if you don't want me there for 12s then don't tell me it's my fault when they do shit after you tell me I have to leave.

Proofread people!!! You claim you're so much better than the unwashed masses? Well get your shit together then on simple shit: Hawaii is making plans for a North Korean missile attack. Tourism officials are not pleased
The islands of Nihau and Kauai are the farthest east, and are roughly 4,400 miles from the Korean Peninsula.
WEST people. Those are the WEST-most inhabited Hawaiian islands.

Grrrr.

Simple shit people. This is the kind of thing the editors are supposed to fire you for because it just makes the whole organization look stupid. Which it did, and then other organizations re-print it (virtually, but still) without checking it themselves either.

Not professional.

(Any discussions about N. Korean missiles and related though should probably go into Politics somewhere)
