How do you ask someone if he's having monetary problems?
It depends on what your relationship is, why you need to know, and what you will do based on the answer. A bigger factor is culture - so even knowing the above any answer I give would really only be useful in the US. But if there's something you think you can do to help, then it probably doesn't matter much what you say to ask as long as you're tactful and respectful.

If you can't provide any help or you're just curious, there's probably no good way to ask.

I know you're not talking about me, but the answer is yes. And getting a text about it at 7pm on a Friday night when there's absolutely nothing I can do about it is not the way I'd like to go into my weekend.

It's about my brother. He's selling his car, changing schools and a few little things like that. I'm more worried about why is he having problems. He makes more money than me. It's probably nothing but I'm paranoic like that.

I don't think there's much reason to beat around the bush with family unless you already have a bad relationship, something like "I noticed you've sold your car and are changing schools - what's going on? Are you having financial issues?"

His response will tell you whether he's interested in talking about it with you.

I made it from Huntsville to Kalamazoo in just over 10 hours (I think it was 10:05). How far are you going?

He's heading to Colorado.

I used to make the drive from Morgantown to Jacksonville in around 13 hours. About 6 to Charlotte from here. The mountains add a bit of extra work.

Actually, he's heading to Albuquerque today.
I hated driving in New Mexico. When I was heading to San Diego, it was as if someone had stationed wind machines at the state line. In a little Escort hatchback, it was hours of trying not to get blown off the road. Yuck.

My air conditioner gave out 40 miles ago and the guy at the gas station here says the closest service center will be in Tucumcari. Wish me luck.

Saddle up those horses and we'll head to the northwest
Our climatizer's broken as we head upon our quest
We've got 800 miles afore we get our chance to rest
That's 12 hours of drivin' windows down, windows down, boy
That's 12 hours of drivin' windows down

TIL @PatrThom was from the West End of Nashville...

That's actually San Jon, is it not?

And yes, New Mexico is the only state of the Union where you can legit experience all four seasons in one day, just driving from one end of the state to the other.

Georgia says "U wat?" The temperature difference from the coast to the Appalachians is incredible, over the course of a 5-hour drive. I was not fully prepared for it when I went from here to the approach trail of the AT, in March. There were still patches of snow on the ground, in places.
