It's sad because I ran to DC escaping the reign of Bendis and suddenly all those BENDIS IS COMING ads popped up. He was definitely the weakest part of #1000.

Your mistake was thinking you can escape Bendis.

...

On a mroe sserious note, why does anyone think he should do any books that aren't about street level heroes? Did i miss something?
Im on the same page as you. He dropped doing a fun as hell Defenders comic using the same characters as the Netflix show so he could come potentially screw up Superman.

I feel like he’s kind of lost it even with street level heroes at this point. It’s sad.

I’m willing to give writers multiple chances too. I think Spencer will do amazing on Spider-Man and that Slott has a chance to really do something with Fantastic Four (the F4 stories he told in AMS 657 were great) - but Bendis has let me down time and time again.

Also, he took a book meant to celebrate Superman and made his story about his OC impaling supes while two girls used Bendis-Speak to praise the fact that he was wearing the red trunks again.

I didn't read his Action Comics #1000 story, but I did read his DC Nation #0 story.

It feels like the Donner movie. That probably isn't how Bendis will stay with writing it, but for these few pages, it's eerily in line with that version of the characters. I'd love it if not for all the growth the Super family has gone through in the past two years.

His Action Comics #1000 story was very BMB in its dialog, but his DC Nation story read very different. I was pleasantly surprised. I didn’t get a movie vibe at all though.

Clark's timidity was exaggerated to that point and Perry White's only difference is he's not chomping on a cigar. Maybe it was mostly Perry giving me that vibe since he has like 75% of the dialogue. But yeah, I was pleasantly surprised too. If my comics budget hadn't just been tightened, I'd at least be checking out Action Comics, but I need to save my pull list money availability for the new Justice League books and whatever Kelly Thompson projects are coming this summer.

It's weird that Tom King's Joker story was the least interesting one in DC Nation for me. Maybe because it didn't do anything unexpected. I'm much more hyped for No Justice now than before.

That story would have been 10x better if joker let the dude live
Right, because the whole time you know he's going to. The only part that stuck out was the guy saying he couldn't stand the tension anymore and just asking Joker to kill him, and then Joker talking him down. And not in a fake way, but in a genuine way. But even that didn't fool me into thinking Joker was going to let him live.

I don't need to keep stressing how psyched I am for the post-Metal era of Justice League stuff, but I desire to, because I'm psyched like crazy for it.

Hellboy omnibus vol 1 came out today.

It's pretty nice. I haven't read the older trades in probably seven years. I'll have to see if it's a more satisfying experience this time now that the stories are in order.

Legion of Doom is forming in DC Comics

I may have to find room in my comics budget for Scott Snyder's Justice League.

I liked some of his early Batman run, but didn't like where it went, so I was writing him off. Then I read Wytches, loved it, thought maybe he was just a good horror writer. Then I read his Swamp Thing run, loathed it. Read Dark Nights: Metal and Batman: The Black Mirror, liked them both. So I think the issue isn't Snyder' it's that I can't stand the New 52.

Selling point on this is that he has a two-year plan for Justice League. I like when the writer has a plan and I'm pretty sure DC won't get in the way. It's also nice to know there will be arcs focused on single characters, as opposed to Every Issue Must Focus on Everyone. Also that it's continuing off of Metal, and will wrap into JL Dark and JL Odyssey, which I'm already planning to read ... I'm sold.

I guess I'll have budget room because of DC's bad news today.

The Young Animal imprint is cancelled. All books end in August except Doom Patrol, which will keep going after yet another hiatus. I love Shade the Changing Girl/Woman. It's a brilliant, melancholy book that reads like a long poem. At least it'll have a proper ending though, as should the other Young Animal books.

I’d say I’m shocked but after the first few months Gerard Way became completely incapable of getting Doom Patrol out on a regular basis and it was impacting the other books he was supposed to be overseeing as well.

I do find it surprising that they’re not rolling some of them into Vertigo.

Me too! Especially with the whole Vertigo revitalization underfoot plus DC's other imprints. Maybe they should just do them as OGNs. That would take some of the pressure off Way since he can't get Doom Patrol out on time to save his life.

DC is bringing back their Vertigo imprint.

Hell. Yes. Vertigo was like Image today: a cornucopia of quality books. And I'm digging the line up of diverse books with interesting, political themes. And giving newer talent a chance. This is all stuff that defined Vertigo and I absolutely can't wait.

I'll bet you anything these books will have Comicsgaters frothing at the mouth. Which makes this announcement all the sweeter.

Ahem... "GODDESS MODE from writer Zoë Quinn". They already know.

Yeah. It's unfortunate that since GamerGate died off, she's jumping into similar "Gate" waters. I guarantee they'll not only target her but blame her for the other titles. She'll be their scapegoat for this new line of Vertigo books.

I should note that Vertigo never really went away. It's published series as recently as last year like Astro City, Clean Room, and Imaginary Friends.

None of the titles are calling to me, but I'm happy they're there because despite what the Comicsgaters believe, it's possible to not have interest in something but still be happy it's there for the people it appeals to.

I may check out trades. I need to start keeping a list of books that interest me that I plan to check out the trade, because they slip out of my brain and then later I'll be like "hey what was that book with the pink and blue cover with swords? Dammit ..."

"A Vows feature this past weekend by George Gene Gustines, a senior editor at The Times who writes about the comic book industry, gave away [something] about Batman..., days before the latest issue of the Batman series goes on sale. The plot twist is contained in issue No. 50 of Batman, published by DC Entertainment and set to go on sale at 12:01 a.m. July 4."

The NYT is largely brushing it off by playing the "What do you think we should have done differently?" card:

"The piece was a fun feature in the Vows pages of the Styles section, but many of our readers took it very seriously."

I think they just hate comic book readers.

But beware the NYT - the spoiler is in the headline, so simply visiting their website might spoil something for you.

The internet made it clear I wasn't going to make it to picking up the comic tomorrow (we aren't going to the store today) without it being spoiled, so I just read it online and will get the physical copy Thursday.

I'm annoyed.

I'm going to elaborate ...

I loved Tom King's run of Batman from the start and up to the end of 2017. The double date with Lois and Clark was the best, and the last of the good. 2018, it's mostly been bad issues. They've felt like padding to make it to the wedding, and Julie and I put up with it because we figured this was all going to matter and we were still looking forward to the wedding.

But now? I don't care now. I think I might drop Batman. Not for one bad issue, but for months of bad issues under the guise that at the end the build-up would be worth it. It absolutely wasn't.

One nice thing though: if I buy the trades up to the double date, that's a perfectly good ending that implies the sweet future we saw in Annual #2.

G. Willow Wilson, writer of Ms. Marvel, will be taking over writing duties for Wonder Woman as of #58 this November.

Geez, and I was considering a shift to trade waiting. Daaaaamn.
