Video Game News and Miscellany

Yeah, it's like... well, I guess I don't get to finish the story. Thanks Skybound for making the situation WORSE. SOMEHOW. You could have done nothing and I'd be better off.
Why not? Instead of being left hanging, they're delivering the game on all platforms it was purchased and making it available on their own, right? What am I missing?

Because I already have -7- god damn market place apps for my library of games, I don't need a fucking 8th, for a SINGLE title.

Because they are only selling it on Epic, and just fulfilling orders for people who already paid for it elsewhere. Who even knows if that will be the case. Maybe I'll get the rest of the game, but only if I use the Epic Games Downloader. It's too soon to tell.

Again, the article says it'll be delivered on whatever platform you bought it on...? Also I fail to see how having it available is worse than not, regardless of circumstances.

I understand that it feels shitty to have Epic snatch the game up and use it to push their new service, but wasn't there real fear that the game was just cancelled and would never exist anywhere? Isn't this automatically better than that, even if they end up making it exclusive and you have to choose between skipping it or adding another launcher?

What @Dei said; you had to buy it before on Steam. I hadn't gotten it on Steam yet; I've been broke for about two months because I was saving for a trip AND saving for next semester at college. Right around the time it was taken down is the first time I'd have had cash to get it. So now I don't have the option to solidify it in my library alongside -every other game in the series-.

And again, I have 7 marketplace apps on my PC right now: Steam, GOG, ARC, Battlenet, Twitch, Origin, and Discord. My library is scattered amongst all of it, but now I'm expected to get Epic -just- for TWD? Fuck that noise.

I'm still not seeing how you're worse off than if it had been left to rot, though.

Because you're trying to make a point that I should be "thankful" that it exists at all, but you're doing it badly. I shouldn't be thankful for Skybound and Epic to have a gun to my head in regards to this because this is the fucking PC marketplace. The defining feature of the PC marketplace is that -nothing- is exclusive, all you need is a PC. But they are trying to upend that shit and waste more of my time and hard drive space (not to mention whatever fucking analytics they take from me without my permission or knowledge or compensation) and normalize PC marketplace exclusivity like this is the fucking consoles.

Fuck. That. They should be thankful we've supported this game, especially after the lackluster Season 3 and the Michonne game that no one asked for. They did this to themselves and I shouldn't have to deal with their attempts to actively make PC gaming a worse business than it already is.

I don't give a shit if you're thankful for it, I'm saying that it can't possibly harm you to have it available instead of not available. The company that made the game went under, another company stepped in and made the game instead of letting it rot. They chose to make an arrangement to put it on one marketplace instead of others, and if you decide that you don't want the game badly enough to download the extra client, you're in exactly the same position as if they hadn't put the money in to finish development. You can either buy it and play it or not, and in neither case have they made your life worse by making a game available.

Dude, tone it down a little. No need to be so antagonistic.

If you read it again you'll see that I made zero personal attacks of any kind in what I said. All I did was swear in response to a post littered with profanity, and one that was far more aggressive in tone than mine.

I didn't say you made any personal attacks. It's all in your tone and attitude.

After 3 replies of Ash completely ignoring what I was saying and accusing me of things I wasn't doing I ran out of politeness. Oh well.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Randomizer has a special holiday version available for Christmas. It's the same options, but all of Hyrule is covered in snow, some enemies are wearing festive hats, chests are now presents, restorative hearts are peppermints, and other sprites are changed as well. Plus there's festive holiday music!

And if you just want to watch someone else play it:

This video makes some damn good points.
That's a good video. I like how it completely and utterly unmasks dual analog as the shittiest control scheme currently in use, and that the only reason it is accepted is because console game devs make the games bend over backwards to play FOR you because you can't be expected to do well with such shit controls.

And yeah, PC gamers adopt motion controls more readily because, really, the mouse IS sort of a "motion control," albeit only in two dimensions. It makes use of all those same coarse/fine motor adjustments they mention get used in motion controls.

I didn't play the Wii much, but I tried it - I think the main reason motion got a bad rap was because the initial implementation was bad and the Wii itself was a weak console. Remember when the wiimote was first introduced, and everybody said "NOW THEY NEED TO MAKE A STAR WARS LIGHT SABER GAME WITH MOTION CONTROLS" and it never happened? Every time I tried to use the motion controls on the wiimote, it got out of calibration within minutes and often times entirely failed to pick up my movements at all - or interpreted them incorrectly. By the time the problems were ironed out, it was after the Wii was a viable option anymore and most people had long since written off the entire motion control paradigm as double plus ungood. It took years to come back from that.

But now we have Beat Saber, Gorn, and countless other good motion control games... and in VR to boot. And people are slowly starting to come around again.

Which prices most people out of the experience. Right now, VR rigs cost as much as a console and most require a PC/console as well. This is the problem with motion controls: ether it's affordable but doesn't work 100% of the time or it's fucking hella expensive and most people will never get to experience it. Until developers can bring the price of VR gaming down into the realm that most people can actually afford, motion controls are STILL just developers fapping.

I think aside from the cost (which is the biggest factor, no question), the problem with VR is the lack of a "killer game." The game that gets EVERYONE'S attention and screams "This. This is the game you need VR for."

The Wii had it right out of the gate with Wii Sports, which is partly why it was such a hit with the casual customer. The system was affordable and with the game included, it was inviting for anyone.

That's true of full motion control; it's still too expensive to be mainstream. However, it's still noteworthy that it works as well as it does, since previous generations of VR still had movement tracking problems.

That said, gyro aim works, it works damn well, and the only reason it's being held back is gamers who don't want to learn how to use it.

Because, again as I said, its initial implementation was shitty and soured a lot of people on the idea. They'll come around, as long as it is consistently good. There are still plenty of PC gamers who won't even use a wireless mouse because of how laggy the technology was 10-15 years ago.

I mean, I won't use them because I suck at remembering to plug them in to charge when I'm done with them. :p

That's why I got one whose charging cable also doubles as a data cable :p So even if I forget... I'm not out of commission and can game while it charges.

I mean, I won’t use a wireless mouse/keyboard for gaming either, but that’s mainly because I don’t want the battery to die while I’m playing. The mouse problem has been (mostly) solved with the introduction of mouse pads that charge the mouse as you use it, but that doesn’t really solve the keyboard issue.
I'm feeling very attacked right now.
You’re only being 20% attacked, you’ll be fine.

Recently I learned that there was a NES port of Sim City that was very near completion when it was canceled, possibly to keep it from distracting from SNES sales.

If you wanted a copy of Star Control: Origins, then I hope you got your copy already.
Because now it's gone.
The ongoing legal battle between original Star Control creators Fred Ford and Paul Reiche III and Star Control: Origins developer Stardock escalated significantly on the last day of 2018. Following a favorable court decision, Ford and Reiche filed DMCA takedown requests with Steam and GOG over allegations that Star Control: Origins infringes on Ford and Reiche's copyrights. Steam and GOG both removed Star Control: Origins from their respective stores

Man, what a legal mess for such a classic game.
IT basically boils down to Brad Wardell not understanding what he'd bought from Atari, despite the people involved making it clear that they owned the rights of basically all of the creative content involved. If he'd listened, he wouldn't be in this mess... and he ESPECIALLY wouldn't be in this mess if he hadn't spent 10 million dollars on development on the assumption that he could beat them in court.

Posted some of this to Discord, but posting the link here:

Tales of an aging gamer: Why don’t I pick up a controller as often as I used to?

And here’s the part I quoted on Discord. I think it might even parallel a discussion I had with @Dave a while back
aging gamers tend to gravitate toward more casual and less competitive games. “Picking up a competitive shooter takes time to practice and a strong desire to compete, both of which older gamers have less of,” Yee says. Of the 12 motivations in Quantic Foundry’s model used to identify a gamer’s preferences throughout the years, the appeal of competition declines the most with age. It dips faster even than the desire for destruction, excitement, and challenge, characteristics which are usually seen as a young gamer’s motivation.
“The most dramatic shift in gaming motivations (for both men and women) is in competition—the appeal of duels, matches, and leaderboard rankings,” Yee tells Ars. “Gamers are much less driven by competition as they get older, and this motivation drops the most between ages 15 and 25 and levels off around age 32-plus.”

That all rings true for me. I just don't have the time or patience to "get good" compared to the school-age kids.

Mind you, I also don't have the patience for the immature toxicity of said school-age kids.

The industry at large is growing intolerant of this, as the OG Nintendo/Atari generations become middle aged. Most of us didn't lose interest in the hobby, most of us are okay with sharing the space with a younger generation who likes different games than we do, but we've (for the most part) outgrown the racism and sexism we tolerated from each other when we still felt we were the real "outsiders" in life, even if younger fans haven't.

That's part of the recent string of controversies with pro players acting like fucking monsters; they are at the age where they are supposed to have outgrown this shit, but decided to keep doing it in public because their fans do. Too bad for these fucks that the OGs (and corporate sponsors) want to actual make the pro scene respectable and sustainable.

I'm starting to wonder if older gen gamers are just going to isolate themselves in private servers or what in the coming years, because it's clear they aren't having fun with the kids.
