The more I look into it, crunch numbers, research housing costs... the more sold I am on saying fuck it to california and moving east as my current lease ends. I've officially put in the transfer request to a full time position and am waiting to see if I get the offer, which I can always decline and keep the status quo. 40 hours a week at my pay rate is barely a room in a shared rental here, but in Kansas City I can easily rent an entire unit for less than 1/3 of my income, and that's not even accounting overtime and my side gigs, just my bare minimum regular income.

You're not alone in that assessment. Thousands are moving away from CA's unbelievable cost of living.

What's San Francisco gonna do when there's no one left to work in the shops or restaurants? Will the skies be filled with drones after Google creates an online-only grocery store?

I legit don't understand how anyone who doesn't make six figures is living there now. It just doesn't seem possible. $15/hour doesn't add up enough to cover rent, let alone food, gas and bills.

Grandfathered in. Legacy families that owned homes from before everything went insane, and their descendants are still there.

For now.

I've considered moving out to CA because I know I can live surprisingly efficiently and because the salaries are so much higher, since this would get my family out of debt that much faster and give us more options sooner (i.e., "Get a good-paying job in the city and pay off the farm"). But HOLY Moses, the current residency prices and homelessness mean that unless I luck into some 250k/yr position, I'm probably better off staying where I am. And that's somewhat of a shame, because I wouldn't mind having a chance to really stretch my talents and pick up some new ones.

When people can no longer afford to live or transport to the city every day, THAT is when they'll build the high speed rail and I assure you, the tech companies in San Fran will bribe the shit out of local town councils to make it happen.

The problem with the CA evacuation is that they're leaving to the next state over.

People in Oregon and Arizona are not happy. (Nevada doesn't count because CA'ians have been driving to Vegas up the 15 for years.)

they have been moving to, and subsequently ruining, Colorado for at least 25 years.

Sitting in my meeting now. I’ll know in about an hour how much my bonus is going to be. But I have to sit through a lot of shit to get there.

You can all move as much as you want. I’m here to stay, and the less overpopulated the state gets for me the better. However, we have a massive influx of people moving in as they follow tech jobs, so the people leaving are just barely keeping it even.

And we wouldn’t have as much of a homeless problem if those other states you keep mentioning would stop putting their homeless on busses and sending them here.

12% + 3% cost of living raise, +$100 for my 10 year anniversary.

July is going to be nice.

'Course, it's all gone already as we're buying a sleep number bed, but at least we can get one!
So for the next few years, nights in bed (literally) sleeping with your wife are going to be nice.

Innovation centers draw in high-demand, high-paying jobs, drive up costs, drive away other people, pole moves, people follow, etc. It's a cycle that's been going on for decades. Like much everything else, of course, it's getting more extreme lately.

Anyway, I went to a visit to the building they're retrofitting to be our (FedEx) new European IT headquarters. Its going to be really pretty....But i've worked in the building before. The location is crap, crap, crappity crap. They're completely stripping the whole building. Everything, literally including the plaster on the walls and the plumbing and the roof etc etc. The only thing they're not changing - and can't change - is the location - and the people who decided on the move admit it's not a great location! THEN WHY THE FUCK DID YOU CHOOSE THAT ONE?! It's right across from the new NATO headquarters, which means pretty streets and high-value and nice impressive stuff for international visitors...And absolutely horrible mobility issues for every summit, every international problem, every manifestation, etc. Having a lovely office is useless if you can't get there, dumdums!

And holy crap, a 15% raise? I know things are different in different places, but I don't think I know anyone who has ever gotten that much of a raise for anything. Congrats.

I was expecting to see my yearly increase on today's check (based on when they've done it in the past).
Nope.
Looks like I have another 2 weeks to find out.

Oh I see how this goes, you'll eat my double chocolate mini muffins but not my hard tack. I see, I get the picture, I know what's going on. Yeah. So, think about that.

Coming back to that work event yesterday....It was a useful networking opportunity, and fun and all that. One person I talked to added me on Facebook. Sure, why not, I'll just throw you in a "colleagues and work" group and make sure you don't see most of my posts (political etc).
So he starts chatting on FB. Why not, he's an expat, he might want to meet new people. Great. In...5 posts time, he's opened up that he's gay, bottom, and in-the-closet trans, but likes to dress as a woman when he's alone. Good for him, go right ahead, I certainly do'nt have any problem with any ofthat, and the fact that he's fairly high-up in an American company is a positive thing. But...Maybe that's a bit too much too fast? I mean, he's also sai he thought I was bi or gay, too, and now I'm confused if he was trying to come on to me or just being polite, or what. I'd gladly go have drinks with him in a collegial setting, but I'm not really trying to explore my sexuality at the moment

I'm attending a wedding of two people I don't actually know. I'm mainly noting three things:

1. I'm horribly underdressed. The invitation said no dress code, but everyone's in a suit and tie anyway, while I am very not.

2. The church guitarist looks so much like Elon Musk.

3. The bride's dress makes her figure look amazing.

Are you still in the UK? Because, in the UK and large parts of France, Belgium, etc, a wedding is suit and tie standard - if they wanted people in jeans and t-shirt, they'd have mentioned it. I'd never arrive in anything but suit and tie unless I was very sure it was OK.

And I think that's what bridal dresses are designed to do ;)

Like me, you must have "that face." The one that says, "You can talk to me about anything and you probably will."

Considering his comeback to my "I'm straight, monogamous and in a committed relationship" was "well, we can still be friends, and if you're ever single or adventurous, just say the word", and he was the second gay guy coming on to me this week, I think it's that with an added "radiating my mostly-straightness* doesn't work when there's no girlfriend on my arm" :aaah:
