The majority of the country has not yet realized that Portland is being used as a Petri dish/focus group to measure just how far a populace can be pushed & how much force needs to be applied to ensure capitulation, and also to trial run tactics and explore their legality prior to more widespread deployment. I fully believe the reason the Portland protests were "chosen" for this honor is because someone decided that, demographically, they were the site most likely to put up the strongest resistance, and therefore any tactics determined to be effective there should be adequate to deploy elsewhere.

Yup. You have a public key and a private key. You use your private key to encrypt and/or sign messages, and the rest of the world uses your freely-available public key to decrypt it to read it and/or authenticate that it actually came from you. Alternatively, anyone else in the world can use your public key to encrypt and send a message that only you can read. Spread your public key out to as many people as you like, but DO NOT lose/give away/let anyone else use your private key. EVER.

So, the DHS is saying that they've pulled all of their troops out of Seattle, as reported by Inslee and Durkan. If - IF - it's true, then it's only because they've deployed them into Portland as backup, because there are some of the rookinest rookies possible out in POLICE DHS uniforms now. I know they're rookies, because they're where I was a week or so ago - they look for the source of the noise when a firecracker pops, and then they're looking at it when the flares go off. You gotta know what's coming next by the sound of the explosion, the hiss of the canister, the color of the plume, how fast the chemical disperses, how thick the fog becomes, or what symptoms you feel. I can't believe I'm going to actually have to write this out but, here's a guide:

  1. On sound - start listening through recordings of previous Portland streams on Periscope or Twitch. Radarbeam, Veteran4Peace, ConcreteReporting (all on Twitch), TheRealCoryElia, IwriteOK, tuckwoodstock, and MacSmiff (Periscope) are all good sources. Except for Radarbeam, they're pretty good at remaining unbiased. Radarbeam makes no pretenses, he doesn't claim to be press, he's "out there to protect the Mom's behind him with his body." Put the streams on, grab your best headset, and listen over and over until you can tell the difference between a firework, a flash bang, a nine-banger, a roman candle firework, pepper fire from the automatic paintball guns, and the oh so distinctive "fwoomp," of grenade launcher based canisters leaving the barrel. Then keep listening until you stop flinching when the civilian versions go off, if you haven't already.
  2. For grenades - they come in two general types, hand thrown and launched. Hand thrown are no less dangerous or powerful than the 40mm/37mm round launched versions. They include triple chasers, smoke pots, stinger ball grenades, flash bangs, nine bangers, gas canisters (come in choice of OC, CS, and CN gas), and lethal versions that we haven't seen on the ground yet so I can't speak to those. The big difference between the launched grenades and hand thrown is range - a well arced grenade from a 37mm launched can sail two downtown blocks, falling behind protester lines and cutting off the phalanx.
  3. On phalanxes - you want two shields and two umbrellas per leaf blower. The more powerful the blower, the better. Look for backpack worn, gas powered blowers vs battery operated, they just have higher capacity. Make sure the shields are rigid enough to be used to waft gas or smoke away until the leaf blower gets going. The umbrellas are for both providing overhead cover from grenades and for deflecting sprays of pepper spray or DM.
  4. On DM - this ties in nicely with all the rest of the points. For color blind individuals, check the smell notes at the end of the gas description.
    1. Pepper spray (OC, or Oleoresin Capsicum) will make you sneeze, cough, burn your nose, burn your eyes, and make you tear up. In PDX they've been using pepper spray grenades, pepper spray filled paintballs, pepper spray in fire-extinguishers that they spray right in your face, and bear mace. This is a liquid, droplets, or spray application, including in the grenades. It doesn't create large clouds of gas or fog, unless they spray it on a fire, which they've been known to do.
    2. CS gas, of which the primary component is 2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile, is your traditional massive cloud dispersal tear gas application. It's an aerosol delivery system, and the size of grenade tends to determine the radius of the dispersal. Watch for triple chasers, which hit the ground and explode into three sections, each of which likes to rocket around on the ground for a bit while trailing a gas plume, before detonating with a resounding low boom and giving off a big cloud of gas. This stuff smells like sulfur/rotten eggs/crap, etc. Generally just terribly unpleasant smells. If you smell something terrible and it's making you cough but not puke, throw your respirator on and you should be ok to make egress in a calm and orderly fashion.
    3. CN gas, of which the primary component is chloroacetophenone. It was investigated, per wikipedia, during both world wars, but due to its high toxicity, it was never used then. It's being used in Portland, as a powder additive to the regular CS grenades. It tends to leave a pinkish residue, and has been reported to burn hair off of peoples' exposed skin. Smells the same as the previous one, plus peppery. Mask up, sleeves down, calm orderly dispersal.
    4. DM, or Adamsite, is a crystalline substance that can be blown through a fire to create a gas that makes people vomit. The vomiting agent is a chlorine derivative. Several other chlorine derivatives are present in the gas created by burning the Adamsite, including very small amounts of Chlorine Gas - the kind that made the trenches in France and Germany uninhabitable to this day. This tends to produce a yellowish green gas. We'd been calling it swamp gas until we found out what it was, but now we know. There is no gas mask that will defend against Adamsite. If you start to feel the need to puke, run. If you see yellowish gas, run. There is no defense against this agent, and if you stay in the cloud too long you can pick up toxic concentrations of the other chlorine gases. This stuff smells like a pool, so if you smell a pool, run.
  5. Smoke. There are two main types of smoke device being used by the feds right now. The first is the SAF-SMOK grenade, which is your average everyday smoke grenade from the cop shows. It comes in white/gray, red, blue, and dark green - very important distinction, dark green, like a pine tree. It's obviously very different than the yellow-green of the Adamsite. The other one is much more like a smudge pot. A couple of these will obscure a city block.

Edit: The withdrawal agreement only covers BORTAC. The FPS, and US Marshall Service will still be onsite, and will be working with state patrol troopers (the only ones that don't have a restraining order against them). Here's a source from Oregon Live. Otherwise, it came from watching, live, as the leadership of Don't Shoot Portland, who had been handed the reins of the WallOfMoms official account after a couple weeks back (or last week, they all run together) spent the day disavowing the Wall of Moms leadership because they kept getting swooped. Don't Shoot PDX had been handed the leadership reins after Bev from Wall of Moms spent a day tweeting out that they had proof that the feds were going to start using live ammo that night and then deleting every tweet where someone asked for proof and refused to provide it to any media sources except for KGW, who they personally did an interview with, and just kept telling everyone "watch the news, we told the news watch the news." It was a massive debacle then, because they didn't have any proof that feds were going to start using live ammo, and in fact, they didn't have any documentation that hadn't been available to everybody back in June. The feds have always had live ammo in their rifles, shotguns, and sidearms.

So leadership had their access to the Twitter account pulled and it was handed to the leadership of Don't Shoot PDX. Bev - who lost control following her "theys got live ammo!" stunt - then took control of the moms on the ground and continually led the white moms away when BIPOC moms were getting gassed in front of the federal court house. They spend most of their time sitting by the Justice Center listening to a bunch of narcs scream about how women are bad, people of color other than black people are bad, and black women are especially bad (Black Unity PDX, aka Portland Justice, aka Rose City Justice, aka Portland Protest Bureau, aka narcs). Last night, their final chant of the night was "Fuck Black Lives."

Then, Bev registered three trademarks for the group and registered them as a 501(c)(3) with herself as the leader and the slogan "This is about more than Black Lives Matter."

Also, interestingly enough, the person in local independent journalism who had been working most closely with WallOfMoms completely disappeared from the ground the other day, showed back up at home, and is back to tweeting about cute cuddly animals and no longer calls herself a journalist.
