Coronavirus Thread

It may have been a good idea that I did not go to Mom's for T-Day. A co-worker that I share a cubical wall with just tested positive for the Rona. I don't know if he was exposed before I worked near him 2 weeks ago. I'll eat spicy food for a week and see what happens.

Meanwhile, in Wisconsin, the state GOP is planning to send teachers and state workers back to offices.

Some gems

" It was the first legislation introduced by Wisconsin Republicans since they passed a bipartisan COVID-19 bill in April. Since then, they've regularly fought with Democratic Gov. Tony Evers over his statewide mask mandates and restrictions on capacity at bars and restaurants. "

"Among other provisions, which were spelled out at length in a memo from the nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau, the Assembly GOP plan would do the following when it comes to state workers and teachers:

  • Require state government employees who have been working from home to resume working in-person beginning on Jan 31, 2021. This requirement wouldn't apply to University of Wisconsin System employees.
  • Require teachers to be physically located in a school building when they are instructing students unless teachers provide schools with a doctor's note. The state would withhold funding to districts that don't comply.
  • Require a two-thirds vote by local school boards to allow for virtual instruction. The board's approval would only last for 14 days, meaning it would have to vote again every two weeks in order to continue virtual instruction.
  • Require school boards to pay parents $371 to each student's parent if they provide virtual instruction."

"

The Assembly GOP plan would also enact several restrictions on state and local governments when it comes to limiting crowds. It would:

  • Restrict the power of local health officers from ordering the closure of a business unless it applies to all types of businesses. Similarly, a local health officer would be barred from restricting capacity at businesses unless those restrictions apply at all businesses.
  • Prohibit state and local health departments from prohibiting gatherings in churches."

And probably the most blatant power grab by the GOP-

"

The Legislature's budget committee, which is run by Republicans, would also gain several new powers. The proposal would:

  • Give the Legislature's budget committee the power to transfer up to $100 million from other parts of the budget to address the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Require the state Department of Health Services to submit a plan for distributing COVID-19 vaccines to the Legislature's budget committee, and give the budget committee the power to block the plan.
  • Give the Legislature's budget committee oversight of federal COVID-19 funds. The governor had broad oversight over the state's share of the first federal COVID-19 bill."
There's a whole lot more bullshit in there as well. It's amazing how much they are doubling down after the disaster of Trump, and how much worse this pandemic is here because of their stupid efforts.

No. Though remember, this is also the state which put limitations on the Governor's power because Scott Walker lost the election.
I was going to say; a lot of that sounded exactly like what happened when we had the massive meltdown in 2011.

Really, Robin, try playing some other notes once in a while...

My daughter is now complaining that we won't let her go to her friend's house for her birthday, even though gatherings and mixing households is currently banned because we live in a red zone county.

The problem we may have is that there will be no way to distribute a vaccine because the hospitals are too full with COVID patients for anyone to give out vaccines...

So just a question. Trump is planning all kinds of holiday celebrations in DC - the type of indoor party literally everyone with more than five brain cells knows is a bad idea right now.
If the mayor of DC were to issue a blanket ban on gatherings, would it also apply to the WH? Or is that excepted federal land or some such?

There are 79 schools in the Mesa Public School District. Along with the district offices and staff, that makes for 67,443 staff and students.

We have 229 total confirmed cases right now. Guess how many of the schools have zero cases?

Fourteen.

Every single one of the high schools (with one exception) has 10 or more cases. The other has five.

All in all, that's about 350 cases per 100.000 people... That's far, far better than what we have here (we're down to just a little over a thousand... And the politicians of the southern part of the country are already suggesting loosening restrictions before the holidays. Idiots.)

California is in such a bad place with COVID that we are now doing stay-at-home orders across the state. Unless you are out acquiring food for your family, your ass needs to be at home. You can be fined or jailed for breaking the order.

Of course, that's assuming the sheriffs in podunk towns in the Central Valley and parts of SoCal don't shout "Muh freedoms!" and refuse to follow the orders.

EDIT: And yes, many of our politicians are hypocrite jackasses who order everyone to stay home and then go out to meet socially. It doesn't change the fact that we still need to lockdown before the state collapses.

And the other shoe has dropped. Kinda.

We are going back to remote learning after the Winter Break. SPED classes return on the 11th; hybrid will return on the 18th if metrics have gone down (which I doubt).

The school districts in my podunk Central Valley area are still fighting to try to get all kids in class. You know, because this all just a fake liberal conspiracy.

Note that these are usually the same people trying to cut school funding.

Y'all come to Alberta, where the provincial government decided doing nothing was cool and now we're requesting Red Cross and Army field hospitals.

You can still go to a bar, casino, etc. though. Don't tromp our freedums.

ALSO,
