They talked about it a couple weeks ago on the NPR show "Wait Wait Don't Tel Me". Apparently the creator of Grimace says he's a taste bud. Which is weird to me.

The wiki doesn’t contradict the creator. My info was about the role Grimace played, not about what he was.
