Which reminds me of something. If anyone wants a good Easter-themed show to watch, I highly recommend Midnight Mass on Netflix. Good, wholesome show about the meaning of faith in a tight-knit Christian community.

We got a notice at work about various rules re: conference calls on camera.

No PJs!? I will work in my Pika pants dammit!
I'm supposed to dress business casual on conference calls. More often than not, I'm wearing shorts. Sometimes, I'm just in my drawers. At least once, I've had nothing on but a polo shirt and my headset. :D

My company has insisted all along that we appear in our company dress for all conference calls.

From home, I generally work in my boxers and a t-shirt. If someone tries to call me on teams, I let it ring over while I put on a company polo over my T-shirt, then I call them back, pantsless.

Probably not worth the money/effort, but it'd be a fun gag if you got your company polo printed on a tee shirt and just wore that.

Theres just no good reason for one. There is never a time I need to see the person's face. We can share screens to convey information if needed.

But I'm guessing thats true for you as well.

It most certainly is.

But our managers like to feel they do something, I guess.

And to be fair, once or twice a week I do have video calls with clients. THERE I understand the need to be in livery.

For a while back in 2020 when the lockdown was on, we all worked from home and the kids all learned remotely. I dialed into kids computers to fix issues or reset passwords for flustered parents while completely en femme (not yet out then, mind). It was freeing. Then we had to go back to the schools because the Republicans always get their way around here and I had to start wearing pants again.

Was talking at work last week and I said that I was thinking of getting an electric car. Someone asked me about my current car and I told them it's got about 40k miles on it so it's time to look into something else. I went on to say I was thinking about leasing. One guy, Tom, said, "Your little red car out there? I'll write you a check for it right now."

In a couple minutes I'm calling him. I've already talked to the bank and am hoping to be able to get this:

Depends on the type of car, the type of miles, and the type of driver....But yeah, a regular car with a regular use case*? I wouldn't really be trying to sell it at 40K either. I mean, I think some Americans (and no, again, not meant condescendingly at all) go a bit overboard in how long to make a car last (400+K miles on a gas engine? Yikes), but 40K is just about ready for a first check-up or something.

*the patrol cars used by 20+ different security agents rushing around from Urgent Intervention to Urgent Intervention all night without regards to mechanics; taxis; rental cars, driving off road in cars not meant for it, using a Kia Picanto to haul heavy loads up mountain hills,...all good reasons to replace a car earlier

It's 25 miles or so to my work. That's 50 miles there and back. Every two shifts I'm adding 100 miles to my car. I'm also buying two or three tanks of gas each week right now since I'm working either 5 or 7 days depending on the week.

Are you going full EV or hybrid?

TBH I've been waiting with bated breath for the Corolla plug-in hybrid to hit stateside (It's only sold in China currently).

I do my cars like I used to do my tech. As soon as I'm not upside down on the the thing, I tend to trade up.

Except this 300 I'm currently driving. I could trade it in on a profit over the loan, but I drive so infrequently now, I don't really feel like changing it out. I just hit the 20K mark, and I've had it like 3 years. And that's with driving it to Texas from Virginia, and the occasional 2.5 hour jaunt into DFW. It still feels like a new car.

But once this house thing is done? Who knows...

I could expound upon all the virtues and pitfalls of electric vehicles, but the single one that hits home the most is possibly the most vain. I never want to stand in the rain or wind or blizzard again while refueling my vehicle. I pull into my garage, turn off the car, close the garage door and plug it in without any worries, distractions, people or weather, and it takes 17 seconds.

See, and that is also immediately one of the reasons why I'm holding off for now. Also because I can't afford an EV, but anyway - charging is a PAIN.
Townhouse, no garage, no driveway. I could request a charging station in front of my door if I had an EV, but public charging spots are limited to max 4 hours. Or I can hope and pray to be able to park in front of our house and hang a cable, I guess, but the odds of having the parking spot directly in front of our house are just slightly better than winning the Powerball. Fast charger stations still take easily half an hour, and are bad for the batteries and more expensive.

If/when we get rid of our current car, I hope the next one will be electric - it will p robably have to be. But I hope there are many, many more charging options before that comes around.

I have no garage to speak of, either. And the guy backed out on buying it. So I’m going to see what a trade in does.
