Minor victory thread

I wanna wear a kilt. I've only worn a kilt once in my life, briefly in secondary school in London, and I would definitely like to use a kilt in my everyday wear.

Finishing off my second master's thesis, very exciting to have completed the ethics review and move on to data collection. The survey is out in the wild already and I have 79 responses. My target is 100 so I don't have much further to go after only one day.

This one is right up @GasBandit's alley: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ZLZHG88

Some of these conspiracy theories are only a conspiracy theory in the short term, though. I mean, "the government is involved in killing people and hiding their involvement" is something that they've literally done plenty of during the Cold War :p guess I'm a conspiracy nut after all!

"There's a secret group controlling the government"

I had to mark that not true because they aren't secret. Corporations, special interests and billionaires control the government.

It's actually been hilarious the amount of people that are like "That's not a conspiracy, that's true!"

Ok, well, then you know what to answer the question as :D

I had similar thoughts...also about the medical experiments. If it's been documented as happening in the past, it's reasonable to assume it's happening today. I don't see it as nearly the same level of "nutbag conspiracy" as chips in the vaccine (lol!).

"Mind control technology is being used on people without their knowledge" I mean... Propaganda delivered by TV "News" technically fits that bill, doesn't it? Is leveraging technology to tell lies to millions of people simultaneously "Mind Control Technology?"

Also, any vaccine that doesn't involve dead / unable to reproduce viruses does rewrite the DNA of your cells that it infects, since that what viruses do, they infect a cell and change it's DNA to make more of itself.

Yeah, there are some "completely bogus science" ones and some "I hope not anymore but... Well wouldn't be surprised" ones in there.
I don't know the methodology of course, maybe that's intended, because just swallowing everything the government tells you isn't exactly clear critical thinking, either :D
Quite a few "probably true" and"probably not"ones in there that amount to "I hope not anymore but I wouldn't be surprised" for me.
And I answered it assuming the US government, though it wasn't specified;)

I’m probably along the same track as you on many of these. I wouldn’t be surprised is in the thought process on many of my answers. I don’t feel, as a whole, that the “government” is capable of keeping massive secrets. But, I do think that a limited small group that have found a way to hide behind a larger group could keep a secret. Especially in the USA and the inability to pass a real budget by any Congress over the past decade.

Thankfully there's no one more average than a Halforumite :D
... The average person has three weird fetishes, one Belgian and five trans friends, thinks all cops are bastards, all politicians are bought, and that even the American left isn't left enough? And is convinced "minotaur penis" is not a fetish but a healthy habit? Dang.

No. Propaganda is not mind control. Propaganda's target is your software, not your hardware.

 I have a full kilt with my tartan, don't get to wear it often. I have a pre-ban sporran which really compliments it. Rest of the full formal kit as well, but probably out grown them :(

May think about day use kilts as well.

That one about the vaccine causing variants, isn't that sort of how it works? We become immune, it dies out or adapts?

Not really, since teh mutations are random, and would happen even if no one became immune at all.

The vaccines just influence what mutations become prevalent, since they target different parts of teh virus, so mutations that change that part enough so your immune system doesn't recognize it any more have an advantage.

But, as i said, new variants would show up anyway, they would just be ones that make infections faster, or change what the immune system of most target on the full virus etc.

A vaccine provokes an immune response within your body, presumably mobilizing it to combat a specific threat. It has no direct affect on the virus itself.
Any "response" the virus takes is the result of evolutionary pressure(s).

101 responses, I can technically close off the survey! WOOHOO. That's one big step closer to being at the end of this schooling. Thanks to everyone for their help. I look forward to sharing the questions that you were actually answering!

I recently remembered when I was a child, my father was asked to come up with a means to save lives when there was a sour gas leak at well heads or refineries. No one at the agency could come up with a cheap an effective way to keep the oilfield workers alive when they rolled up on a leak.

I heard my parents discussing the situation.. and my 5 year old ass said, "Why not use windsocks at all the wells so the workers would know which way to run?"

My dad did not give me credit for the idea. But that is OK because his boss did not give him credit either.

Good news everyone! Results of my research are in and - you're all crazy!

But no seriously, of the 108 respondents, I somewhat proved my hypothesis.

The idea was that people who are vaccine hesitant, militantly or otherwise, don't like to discuss vaccines with their doctors, especially in this current environment. So instead of a healthcare provider jumping right into vaccines, that can have conversations about some of the general conspiracist beliefs like the small group of people running the world, aliens existing, etc. It's a bit of a psychological cheat - you discuss parallel beliefs to determine if they're going to be vaccine hesitant or roughly how fractious a discussion about vaccines will be. If you know that they have a massive distrust of a small cabal of private individuals running the world, for example, you approach the vaccine conversation a lot more lightly.

Anyways, it turns out that there are some moderate correlations r(106) > .5890 in those statements, so while it's not definitive, it's somewhat helpful in determining how to start parallel vaccine conversations. With the data analysis done, I just have to finish up my discussion of the results and I'm done, yippee!
