I have to keep mine inside and block him from the door, because if he gets out, he'll come back in 1-7 days covered in grime and pissed off as hell, swatting and hissing at everything including me.

Yeah, I've known both types of inside cats.
I've considered adopting a couple with FIV, but they're obligatory inside cats, and you never know which type you'll get. Some might not even venture into the terrace, others might try to take every opportunity they can get to try and break out...

And sometimes they switch types unexpectedly. We had a cat who went from timidly stepping outside if a human were with him, to racing outside every chance he got.

We have a catio and also a leash/ harness for our cat, and that is pretty much all the outdoors he desires.

Unsurprising since he was scared of grass when we adopted him.

We currently have two very different cats. About 3 year old neutered male that has always been afraid of almost everything. He would go in the back yard of his own free will, but come running back in if a plane, helicopter, or even larger bird flew by. He enjoyed chasing squirrels, as long as they ran from him, after they started learning he would run, they started standing up and running him inside, but, insists that he must go outside each night after the sun goes down. We now have a about 13 week old kitten that has no fear of anything. He plays with our Husky mix dog, and purposely annoys the older cat by jumping on him, older cat bats him away and will run away from the kitten.
