Yeah, it's like a form of rebellion. Most in the creative arts tend to lean on the liberal side. Not all, of course, but I'm pretty sure the majority.

Spillane being a Jehova's Witness surprises me because his work was always controversial. Very violent, sexually charged, etc.

Li'l Z asked to watch Terminator 2, which we said he'd need to watch The Terminator first so it would make sense. He was pleasantly surprised when he recognized some of the pop-culture references, but during one of the future flashbacks, we had this exchange:

Li'l Z: "When did this come out again?"
Me: "1984."
LZ: "And all this is supposed to happen in 2029?"
Me: "Yes."
LZ: "So, five years from now?"
Me: "...yes."
LZ: "Uhhhhh...."
Me: "They were taking a guess. Not a great guess, but a guess for the sake of the story."

You should show him Transformers: The Movie. It takes place in the far off future of...2005.

So...Escape from New York next?

I'm genuinely surprised he hasn't seen Robotech yet. It was Mr. Z's favorite growing up, and we have one of the boxed sets.

But yeah, anytime we watch an older film and they took a wild guess what things would be like...pretty much now, it's always humorous, even when it's not supposed to be. I've told him more than once that no one is more disappointed in the lack of accuracy than those of us who have lived this long, waiting for it. Maybe not the dystopia stuff, but the fun stuff. Although, the other night we were at our second restaurant with robot servers, so there's that!

where are my hoverboards?

You know, this and flying cars were part of a discussion we had once. Li'l Z said we needed this stuff, but I pointed out that even when we have wheels on the ground, people regularly get into horrifically dumb accidents. You want to add falling out of the air to that? As much as it pains my little sci-fi loving heart, we are too stupid as a society to have commonplace flying things.

But that's the only stuff that came true.
Cyberpunk technocrazy dystopia is the world we live in.
Star Trek "post-scarcity all humans are one" is the world we want to live in...And, frankly, could live in if 75% of the people weren't such selfish bastards.

I say your point reinforces the need to have it all now. Thin out the gene pool, get rid of some of those poor decision genes to improve humanity as a whole.

If they were able to keep it to themselves, maybe. But the likelihood they'll land on us? High.

I just got a call from an unknown number. Usually these are telemarketing calls, but I'll still pick up because I'm not in a position to ignore calls from unknown numbers.

I pick up. A robo voice says, "We're sorry, all of our agents are currently busy, please call back later." Then the call disconnects.

Spammers use auto-dialers. Once they connect, they attempt to route the call to an available spammer agent. In the US, I think the law is you have to connect with a live agent within 2 seconds for it not to be a violation.

The new car I bought comes with free roadside assistance for six years. I also am a AAA member, which also offers roadside assistance. Just found out today that since I have full coverage my insurance company has free roadside assistance.

If I ever break down I’m going to have them fight it out.

Thunderdome: Omaha

I could totally live with that.

And I got the car a week ago. I've driven to/from work at least 4 times since then, 25-ish miles each way. I still have 300 miles on my range. My Volt had a MAX range of 300 miles.
It's a hybrid? I am looking to move to a hybrid once my 2014 fusion dies.

I still feel like PHEVs are the way to go at the moment, unless you ONLY make short (<150mi) trips. My criterion is that the range has to be enough to do my full commute 2 or 3 times in order for me to consider it, and right now my commute is such that it's too much for a full-on, EV-only vehicle to handle.

I have to say, the charging infrastructure even in rural Texas is really starting to ramp up. But yeah, for the moment, a PHEV is the most sensible option, especially if you don't/can't have a Level 2 charger at home. I do, and it makes all the difference to be able to start any given day at 100% right out of the garage, and be able to drive 250 miles for 8 dollars.

Oh! Show him Robotech! I'm still waiting for aliens, transforming planes, and space travel. It's only... *checks calendar* …25 years past due.
Human girls were supposed to be teaching the zentradi about love through music by now!

Actually by now isn't Earth a scorched ruin?

I've been staring at one of these bad boys all week. I've been carless for a while thanks to being poor and now that I want one again, they cost 3 times as much.

There’s a meme video going around where a guy walks up to random men on the street who are with their wives/girlfriends, shows them a picture of Mia Khalifa, and asks if they know who she is. They all did.

Funny thing is, I would recognize her as well and I’ve never seen any of her videos. Not that my wife would believe me, but it’s true.

She's basically the modern day equivalent of Sasha Grey. Who yes I know who that is because I'm not embarrassed about watching porn. I won't admit to watching entourage, however.
