Video Game News and Miscellany

My PS5 is a glorified dust magnet. Most games that I want to play, also release on PC (might take a year) which I prefer playing on. I use it mostly when friend are over to play couch coop, but even then, they prefer Mario Kart or Brawl on the Switch.

Yeah... running the numbers, getting a PS5 and the disk drive is basically the equivalent of $1200 in Japan. You could get a good PC for that price.

PS5 just doesn't have the games to justify this. The Demon's Souls remake is inferior to the original, a new God of War is years off, and I don't care about the next remake of a 5 year old game. Seriously... give me a call if you decide to put out a new Forbidden Siren game, but otherwise ya'll need to get your shit in order.

Spider-Man 2 is PS5 exclusive at the moment and it's spectacular. Well...it's exclusive for now.

Astro Bot has been a big hit. Since it's so Sony specific, I don't see it going to PC any time soon.

But outside of that? Yeah, if you already have a gaming PC, there's no need for a PS5. I like it for my own preferences, like couch gaming or watching movies, but it really is lacking in good, exclusive reasons to get it.

One thing I do enjoy with it is PS Plus, because it let's me play all kinds of games on it and save having to buy them. I bought the annual pass last year and it's definitely paid off for me.

Who could have predicted this?

Just give me the FF Tactics: War of the Lions remake that’s been leaked. I fucking need it. Then you assholes can go back to your gutless cash grabs, mobile games that rob children, and whatever short-sighted dumb shit you want to do. Crypto. AI. Whatever. Just give me that last remaster that’s already in the works and I can go back to ignoring you while lamenting how Square used to be good, I used to like them, whatever.

Have ANY of their games met expectations over the years?

I'm starting to think they MAYBE need to lower their expectations.
I thought 7 remake was great. And ff14 is it's own thing, but yeah, the biggest problem is they expect everything they sell to be the best selling thing ever.

If they focused more on the gameplay and story, and less about how to make it as profitable as possible, they'd make more money. Because you know what sells games? GAMEPLAY AND STORY, and then milking that fanbase by merchandising it with Fortnite tie-ins, Funko Pops, movie deals, probably some Kingdom Hearts action, etc.

A big part of the problem is that they were tying the PC versions to Epic Games for way too long. When Remake hit Steam, it made more in it's first few days than it did in it's years on Epic.

The other part of it is that, yes, the investors want too much and SE can't deliver it.

News Release: Filing Lawsuit for Infringement of Patent Rights against Pocketpair, Inc.

https://www.nintendo.co.jp/corporate/release/en/2024/240919.html

Palworld: "Let's rip off Pokemon, what's the worst that could happen?"

Nintendo: Brings in lawyers.

Palworld: Palworld's version of Pikachu doing a Pikachu face.
My understanding is they aren't suing for copyright infringment but rather patents, specifically for the pokeball and aiming and throwing to capture, on patents filed this year. Palworld and Pocket Pair are pretty skeevy in general but it feels like reaching.

"build Darkest Dungeon into a juggernaut"
What are they gonna do, make a dating sim with in-game purchases set in the world? Create seven spinoffs that kill any and all mystery?
Make an RTS (@bhamv3 or @ThatNickGuy or who was it that raised that question about an/a elsewhere - an RTS but a real time strategy game... Funny language, English) out of it?
Ugh.

Ugh.
Hero shooter with cosmetic loot drops? Netflix series that gets canceled after 6 episodes? Fortnite cross-over?

It'll probably be something bland, like a Vampire Survivors knock-off, but with tons of monetization.

Soul Reaver 1& 2 Remastered

Well that's neato. I've always been curious to play these but never got around to it. This might be the excuse i was looking for.

Thank the Elder God, it's only on the PS.

I have enough of a back log without games i already finished once.

Interesting move... Valve has removed their forced arbitration clause, and rather, put in a "must be settled in court" clause.

One reason not mentioned in the article (though if this is valid depends on how it was - and is now - worded) is that forced arbitration is not always legal and subject to pretty strict regulation in Europe (the neutrality must be assured, if no common ground is found in arbitration there has to be an appeals process that eventually leads to the regular legal system, etc), while a "must be decided in the court of where our company is located" clause is much more accepted. Not for everything and always, but this could mean that all European customers wanting to fight Steam have to do it in an Irish court, according to Irish law, for example (if Steam EU is headquartered in Ireland, as must big tech companies are).

Another reason not mentioned in the article is that valve is currently in the midst of a mass arbitration, and I'm sure that paying those fees and dealing with those cases individually has been a nightmare.

In recent years, businesses have faced an increasing risk of being targeted by abusive mass arbitration campaigns that seek to leverage the arbitration fees the business must pay, win or lose, to coerce a settlement of even meritless claims.

This game, Threads of Time, looks heavily inspired by Chrono Trigger, and it's visually impressive. It'll be interesting to see if it's mechanically sound as well.

One of the recent releases of the Steam Beta ended support for Windows 7 and 8. Is this news though? I was about to make a comment about how any one still running those versions of Windows should expect support from Steam to end soon, but is someone running Win 7/8 expecting to have the latest version of any program at this point?

The most common complaint that I hear about this is that since many of the games that are on Steam ARE still compatible with Windows 7 and 8 (as publicly stated in their minimum requirements), it is unfair to block access to them simply because the Steam client does not support 7 or 8, especially since that lack of support is (as I understand it) entirely because Google decided to drop support for 7 and 8 in Feb 2023, and the modern Steam client front end is basically just the Google Chrome browser, but reskinned for Steam. And I'll be honest: it's kind of a valid point.

Fallout: New Vegas hasn't had any new (official) patches since what, July of 2011? Windows 10 didn't even release until July 2015, four years later, but too bad, gotta have Windows 10 if you want to download it from Steam.

A similar issue happened when Windows introduced 64-bit support and simultaneously dropped support for 16-bit apps. A disc-based game would itself run fine because it was coded to be a 32-bit program, but the installer on the disc would be 16-bit, meaning if you ever had to REinstall it from (the) disc(s), you wouldn't be able to do so.
