Video Game News and Miscellany

It's absolutely dog shit to cut off people who haven't upgraded for a while from their games.
I believe there is a legacy version of steam that can run on older OSs and download older versions of steam games, but it has to be run through a command line. A youtuber I watch that likes to install steam on ancient hardware that was never meant to play games uses it often.

Is this referring to SteamCMD? That's a command line steam downloader typically used to install dedicated server software, I use it a lot on my server for things like Valheim, Conan, Empyrion, etc.

Probably, I've seen it used to download steam software onto older, no-longer-supported machines.

Something something gog.com downloadable offline installers
Something something planned obsolescence
Something something capitalism
Something something destruction of art

Leaks and rumors say that Valve is working on a version of Proton that works on ARM devices. The main aim of this is likely to run Windows VR games directly on VR headsets, though it could, in theory, also allow Windows games to run on a variety of ARM based devices, including tablets and cellphones. It's also possible that Valve is hedging their bets for future versions of the Steam Deck, in case they want to move away from x86-64 based chips.

Valve reportedly working on ARM64 Proton compatibility layer for Linux gaming

There are like 4 of them now, all from ex ZA/UM people and that's not including the unannounced one from the main writers. And at least two of them got announced hours apart.

I won't hold my breath. Disco Elysium is easily one of my favorite games ever, I'm in danger of spontaneously writing several paragraphs on it here alone, and I just recently finished yet another playthrough of it. But it feels like lightning in a bottle that is unlikely to be recaptured.

Now an official English translation of the original book.. that I can still hope for.

I need to replay it finally (on the copy you gifted me) after going through it once on a less than legal copy.

I always feel intimidated by it.
Failure in that game is just as important as success, so don't be afraid. Embrace being a failure*

Do/Did you enjoy Monkey Island? Then you might enjoy this fan-made spin-off: The Booze of Monkey Island. It's a free download and supposedly captures the charm of the original, but I can't speak to that as I still haven't experienced any of the franchise. It's also based on a property currently owned by Disney & Co, so if you're interested, you might want to grab it while the grabbing is still good.

Valve is doing a massive 20th anniversary for Half-Life 2, including:

-Giving away Half-Life 2 for free this weekend, along with its expansion episodes.
-A major update and bug fixes. Also developer commentary from members of the team (Episodes 1 & 2 had commentary, but never H:L 2 itself)
-Half-Life Upllink, the original standalone demo, previously unavailable, is now available on the menu.
-Old Deathmatch maps re-added
-Workshop integration for mods
-Officially verified on the Steam Deck

Just an insane amount of updates and fixes for a 20-year old game. Some are speculating they're ramping up to announce Half-Life 3, but I'm not getting my hopes up there. It's been 16 years since Episode 2 released and the "Half-Life 3!" thing is just a punchline now. If they are working on it, then great, but yeah, I'm not getting my hopes up.

On t he other hand, I think I'll load up 'ol Half-Life 2 ad check out this new update.

If they are planning an announcement I'd put my money on either a TV show or Half-Life: Alyx 2.

Whoops, I linked the wrong thing for their website. That was for the 25th anniversary of the original Half-Life. Here's the website for Half-life 2.
