The Awesome Videos Thread (with Extra Sauce!)

Here's the official first video of my new channel, with a video essay on 12 Things I Learned on My First Solo Bike Tour.

If you saw it on the other thread, it's the same video with a different title.

Not so much a funny video, but an awesome video podcast discussing the wildfires and the real things that are happening out in California right now:

I still love station wagons, and have never really seen the appeal of SUVs.
The story of the SUV is literally just "we know you want station wagons and minivans, but we make more money when we skirt efficiency and safety regulations, so here, we'll spice things up with some toxic masculinity and you can convince yourself this is what you wanted anyway. Or not. We don't care, we're not going to sell the other stuff anymore anyway."

Thankfully efficiency has still dramatically improved and a hybrid SUV can get 35+ mpg and now there are decent electric options.

I saw that the day it came out. I don't even follow the channel, but the station wagon is the best all-round family design and I will not hear otherwise. There is one -- ONE -- decent modern wagon out there right now...buuuut it costs something like $75k.

We're in the process of rolling all that back.
I was living in the Detroit area when the Ford Expedition was announced, and I remember a (Guindon?) newspaper cartoon that had two guys in a very tall SUV that was crowding and belching smoke over everyone next to them, and the driver was saying something like, "Who needs a tailpipe, when you can have a smokestack!"

This was almost thirty years ago.

My family drives a 20+ year old Toyota Wish, which I believe is a station wagon. It's great.

Also, I just realized that yeah, we've been driving this thing for more than two decades and it's still running pretty much perfectly. Damn this car is amazing.

It does not appear to have a NA equivalent, but it looks almost exactly the same as a Honda Odyssey, which definitely straddles smack dab between the station wagon and minivan slots.

The Wish is a smidge smaller, I believe, which is why when I look at a Wish I think "station wagon", but when I look at an Odyssey I think "SUV".

But, of course, we are firmly within the gray area where these definitions are nebulous and could go either way.

(Also, thanks to recent cinematic offerings, when I look at an Odyssey I also can't help but think "the Honda Odyssey fucks hard".)
