Mass Effect 2 Anticipation Station

The only thing I preferred about the combat in the first was the lack of ammunition. Especially being a sniper.
This. The whole "charges to mitigate overheating" thing is a bit lame when we had unlimited ammo in the previous game and just had to wait for the gun to cool down like it would in real life.

I love the Automatic sniper rifle I got. It's great to be able to pump a lot of rounds into a target that has barriers up from long range. Though the stopping power trade off kinda sucks. So, if I want stuff killed from a distance quickly, I bring Thane along with me. :)
I'm also not all that jazzed about the dumbing down of the character development. Hell, of the dumbing down of the game in general.

What is the point of no return in this game? In the first one, once you go to Virmire you are pretty much on a roller coaster ride to the climax and are SOL if you wanted to go back to do side quests. I just want to make sure I don't accidentally miss out on a bunch of stuff because I did too many plot missions too soon.

Ok, so I'll keep an eye out for the IFF then. Thanks.
Actually, you seem to have a chance to go back and do stuff after you activate the IFF for the first time. The Point of No Return is before you enter the Omega 4 Relay, though the game seems to make you think you need to hurry. Then again, the amount of time it takes you to get into the Omega 4 Relay might effect some parts of the ending.

My order of dying at the end was this: Legion was sent into the pipe, but he survived that part without any problems. I managed to open all the valves with plenty of time left, I don't know if that had anything to do with it. However, Legion was headshotted trying to close the doors, and was the first to die.

Jacob was my biotic during the shield section, he survived. However, Grunt (one of my squad mates) got killed at the end. You know how pissed that made me? The one single purest krogan in the galaxy, gone.

Everyone else survived, only two people died. I assigned Zaeed to lead the first fire team, Garrus to lead the second one. My own squad was Miranda and Grunt, except after Grunt got killed, I replaced him with Tali. I did everyone's loyalty quests, though if I had to estimate I would say Legion is probably the one I talked to least. Not sure where Grunt falls on the scale.

The revelation of the human-Reaper was definitely a nice WTF moment. Appropriate, too. The Reapers we've seen so far are all insectoid, and the Collectors (and by extension, the Protheans) were insect-like. I'm guessing that after the Reapers' cleansing of the galaxy, they base their next iteration on the most dominant and/or worthy species they find during that pass. Also, I thought the tube-shooting fight was the final battle at first. I was all disappointed until a giant Reaper skull reared up and scared the crap out of me.

There were other nice WTF moments in the game. The revelation that the Collectors were once the Protheans caught me by surprise. The Collector attack on the Normandy was tense, I was so used to having a huge stockpile of guns on my back, getting used to running around without them took a bit of time. Mordin singing was also a WTF moment, but in a good way.

There were still some strange unexplained moments in the game though. Ashley survived my imported game, and she was at that colony that was attacked by the Collectors. We watched her get paralyzed, and everyone else was taken, so how did she survive? Also, I don't think the Reapers' fascination with Shepard is fully explained. Do they target him because they see him is a particularly dangerous threat?

Finally, I romanced Miranda during my normal play through. After completing the game, I had the option to continue playing, so I immediately broke up with Miranda and seduced Tali - mainly because I wanted to finally see what she looked like under that mask. Intimate scene comes up, Shepard removes her mask... and the camera immediately cuts away. FUCK THAT!!
So you didn't lose anyone on the ship before you made it to the station? In the run I watched, the ship suffered heavy damage and 3 people died before they even got to the station. I'm going to guess that the ship upgrades play a part in this, as it seems like the times you lost someone were tied to specific upgrades. I'm just wondering how it determines WHO dies.

So the Pipe person seems to be killed no matter what, or at least as far as we know.

However, once the guy in the pipe died, no one else died in the run I watched. It LOOKED like Grunt was going to die once the Reaper was destroyed, but Shepard managed to save him in the end. This might be tied to something too.

You guys are scaring me.

I read the spoilers just because I won't be able to play the game for awhile, but I am the type of person that can't stand having my squad get killed. I refused to play the game if I messed up and killed Wrex, and it took a day for me to accept the fact I had to make Kaiden get killed. I almost told myself "He is going to fly in all safe and sound any minute now... ANY MINUTE NOW!"

The idea of having characters perish no matter what, and RANDOMLY to boot, is going to put me on edge when I actually get a chance to play it. If Tali or Garrus get killed I am going to freak.

Anyways, that won't be for awhile.

Here are some pics!

A different angle to show my customized armor colours. I chose black white and light blue.

You feel lucky? Do ya, punk?

Alot of the options have been removed, but one thing I noted and liked was that you no longer have to level up skill in each weapon. If you can equip it, you can use it. Also, the same is true of armor. I do like the way they've revamped the ammo and such.

Yeah, like I said, they made it into a competent shooter instead of a half-assed rpg shooter. There's still the rpg bits but it doesn't factor into whether or not you can aim with your mouse.

I think it was one of the Bioware guys who said that in Mass Effect 1, RPG players who were terrible at shooters and relied on the stats and other things to help their characters were still bad at shooters and those people who were good at shooters didn't like that the game was taking control of the combat somewhat away from them.

Fortunately since getting my new computer and playing ME1 in summer '08, I've actually become some sort of hybrid RPG nerd and shooter fan. :)

This game is excellent and pretty much what I've always wanted from a sequel. It's so gratifying to run into people that I've helped in the previous game, and see what they're up to now. And I've only run into a couple members of my original team.

I can't wait to see if Liara's actually working for the Shadow Broker, and I wonder if this is a Liara-specific thing, or a romantic-interest thing.

F11 is not taking screenshots for me and I don't know how to map it. Maybe in the ini. I'll check.

Also, maybe this has been posted already in spoilers, which I haven't been reading, but man, new favorite moment in the game by far:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXiU6kiq_Ms

What the? Youtube videos no longer show up in spoiler tags? WHAT HAVE THEY DONE!?

DUDE!! I know!! I stopped my game, which is hard as fuck to get me to do, just so I could see if anyone else had mentioned it.... I laughed my ASS off, forget Krogan wanting Citadel fishies, that's the epitome of funnyness right there. Oh man, I love Mordin.

Allow me to preface what I'm about to write with this: I fucking love this game, and will continue to play the shit out of it.

The PC version of this game has some of the most horrendous DRM that I've ever seen. If you have -any- DLC, you have to be connected to the internet to play at all. With DLC installed, it connects to the EA store at every startup, to verify your DLC. If you're disconnected, it will fail, and you won't be able to load ANY save with DLC in it.

I can stomach DRM to an extent. Mass Effect 1 connected to verify when you installed the game, and any time you patched the game. And I was ok with that. But EVERY GODDAMN TIME I WANT TO PLAY?

There had best be a fix for this.

This.

That said, every single character is fucking hilarious. There are many times where I cannot stop laughing. I still can't believe how much it's improved from the first game. It's amazing. <3 Bioware.

So I killed a thresher maw tonight...
On foot...
In almost one hit...
With the M-920 Cain.

It was awesome.

Edit: Why is that last sentence in the quote box? It should not be there.

Funny, that's what I was planning on using also once I reach it.

I just experienced another wonderful moment.

Traveled to the Local system, which is our solar system, and started scanning the planets there. When I got to Uranus, and launched my first probe, EDI said with a tone of exasperation, "Really, Commander?" And then when I launched my second probe, EDI hesitated before saying in an even more exasperated tone, "... probing Uranus."

Okay folks, for those of you wondering about survivors of the end mission:

Survivors aren't random, they're based on who gets sent where, loyalty and upgrades.

Upgrades: Get every upgrade you can, especially the ship specific upgrades, if you miss a ship upgrade you'll lose someone in the space battle. If you miss a person-specific upgrade you might lose them on the ground.

Loyalty: If someone isn't loyal to you they might die. Send someone who's not loyal on a job and they'll definitely bite it.

The tube: You've gotta pick a tech specialist for this, have either Legion or Tali do this and they'll survive the tube itself, in order to have them survive the next part though...
Backup team: You need a good leader for your backup team, for mine I chose Miranda, though Garrus will work too.
Barrier: For the biotic barrier you need your strongest biotic, so either Jack or Samara/Morinth. Anyone else will keep you alive, but you'll lose one or both members of your squad.
2nd backup team: I picked Garrus here, though from what I've heard Miranda is also ok.
Protect the survivors: Not really sure of the best traits here, I picked Legion and they all made it back ok, others have picked Garrus or Mordin and also had them make it back.

In the run I watched, Tali was sent and everyone got through OK. I'm imagining this is based on how Loyal someone is to you as well, or maybe something related to their stories and how much you've done. Sending the person you choose for your relationship is probably the best bet.

I can officially confirm this as 100% not true for the Steam version.

I unplugged my LAN line and was still able to load up my game with the DLC content installed. I had no problems at all. You do have to be online the first time you use it, but seeing as it's DOWNLOADABLE content, you would be connected when you get it anyway.

All it says is that it can't connect to the Cerberus network. Clicked on OK, then resumed my game. Everything was just peachy. I had full access to Zaheed and even went to the normandy crash site to verify that worked as well.

I have the Steam version, so I can't speak to the EA direct download version.

They seem quite eager to force legit buyers to the console just to escape this hassle. And they've succeeded: I bought this for the 360.
Which sucks, since the PC version looks amazing compared to the 360 one.
Yeah, but only if you have a high end rig. I just upgraded last year and I can't even run the FIRST Mass Effect game. It's a surprisingly beefy game.

Could somebody explain to me who Hugo Stiglitz is and how somebody found this thread in a search engine by searching "Hugo Stiglitz fanfiction"?
I'm wondering who's the poor soul who came in here looking for Miranda Lawson rule 34.

Great, by typing it out again, Google's gonna index us higher for Miranda Lawson rule 34 now, isn't it.

Crap, I did it again.

I think it's pretty funny that on my PC ME2 runs better than both ME1 and Dragon Age. Game doesn't stutter under any circumstances even with every setting cranked.

I'm still cracking up over the "what will happen if you release the Koran in Mass effect 2"

Religious warfare me thinks...
