I'm just finishing up my loyalty quests and getting the last member of my team before mining to get all my upgrades taken care of before doing the IFF (thanks for pointing that out as the point of no return). I'm LOVING the game so far. Thane is badass.
I was so happy when Garrus joined the party after being gunned down. There would be no words for how pissed I would have been if he died. Can't wait to go to the Krogan homeworld and hopefully see Wrex again.
I believe as long as you have loyalty for everyone and pick appropriate members for each task, I chose Tali for the tube, Garrus to lead both times, Thane to bring back the survivors and Samara to produce the biotic field, as well as get all ship upgrades then everyone should survive.
Finished last night at 42 hrs as an infiltrator with all the side quests finished except the pyjack one on Turchanka, for some reason it wouldn't allow me to turn it in. I had also got 100% completion for all the clusters and full paragon as well.
I had finished the first one similarily but since then the save has been deleted, cursed siblings, and was hoping that there would be a way to tailor the second game with the choices you would have made without an actual save, through a sort of questionaire of some sort. I actually thought that that's what the little mini quiz was about on your way to meet the Illusive man for the first time.
My biggest and to be honest only complaint with the first game was the Mako sidequests and how similar they all felt. Now, I can definitely concede that I most likely made myself despise those simply because I did them all at once instead of spacing them out over the course of my playthrough. I found in ME2 I actually enjoyed doing the N7 sidequests.
The game itself has changed quite a bit while at the same time retaining much of the original. As others have said it is much more of a story driven shooter with some RPG elements kept in from the first. They have definitely simplfied many things, such as armor, both the more streamlined version that your Shepard uses and by removing it from your teamates altogether.
I'll be playing through again as renegade though won't be going for the full completion again.
Llast night, I completed the game and no one died.
Really, the choices are just common sense towards the end.
Sent Tali into the tube as the best tech person on board.
Garrus led the first team.
Miranda led the second team.
Sent Mordin with the survivors and everyone made it back.
Jack held the barrier up for us.
Had Thane and Zaeed with me through most of the missions. Only Zaeed was not loyal to me due to saving the civilians and missing the leader on his mission.
Took Tali and Thane into the final fight.
Romanced Tali as well and was also angry when the her mask came off and they didn't show her face. Soooo pissed.

So I'm at the point in the game where I fly around the galaxy mopping up sidequests and upgrades before going to get the IFF and I want to make sure I get everything. Is there anywhere else besides Ilium that sells star charts?

Yeah, apparently you have to go directly or you lose people. I had to go mine a bit more Platinum to get Legion's sniper rifle made and then went right to it, but still lost a ton of people. Gaby in engineering, 1 of the two people in the crew quarters, lost Kelly Chambers, lost the cook guy, etc. etc. Not sure how you can get the IFF, collect Legion, make his upgrade, and still save everyone.
I've had my ear to the ground about that and it seems like you've got time for one mission before you lose people, so that mission should be Legion's loyalty mission. As far as upgrades, I'll be stocking up on everything before doing the IFF.

It was really a disappointment and a total letdown. It looked like it was going to be this epic, super hard fight and ended up that the fucking humanoreaper was almost 0 threat to anything. 10 quick sniper shots to the eye and he goes down? That's it? Boooo.
Also, Jesus, the FemShep hairstyles are awful. At least the guy is just short military dos. The hair textures are just glaringly awful compared to everything else.
I need to get my Paragon points up so I can get my Loyalty from Miranda back. I started the game Renegade, but tried to play it in a "atone for my sins" angle. Leaves me short of the Paragon points needed to get Miranda back to being loyal again. I hope there are enough sidequests before I head out to get her back on my side.
Someone created a mod that tweaks the ammo system, it's now sort of a hybrid between the first game's heat system and the second game's ammo system. Basically, loaded ammo will regen over time while the gun's not being fired. This represents heat being dissipated from the gun. If the counter still reaches zero, the heat sink is popped and a new one loaded - basically the same as reloading the gun. The downside is that guns now can't be reloaded manually, so the only way to fill up your heat clip is to either wait for it to regen, or spend the rest of your clip and then pop a new one.
I gave it a whirl, and it's not bad. It doesn't feel quite like the heat system from the first game, so it's not great to me, but I think it's an acceptable compromise.
I finished, took my time on purpose cause I had played 32 hours in like 3 days and decided I wanted to savor it more after that. Spoilers next:
Like The Doctor once said... EVERYONE LIVES! JUST THIS ONE TIME, EVERYONE LIVES!! I lost no one, not even crew. I did every single mission and assignment I had before going after the IFF, and purchased every upgrade for the ship except the one that removes the scars. I was Paragon so duh. I bought no upgrades for specific squad members except Grunt's shotgun, so I don't think those have much to do on who lives and who dies.
I'm glad my first playthrough had no one dying... especially cause I read no spoilers before hand so I had no idea what needed to be done to avoid losing people, and I still accomplished it. I win!
So how many endings are there anyway? Not counting the number of people who live, like, actual endings.
Then there are four, I believe. Two variations of two variations.
You can either have Shepard live, in which case he has a final meeting with the Illusive Man, or you can have him die, in which case Joker meets with TIM. And the meeting will either be about Shepard keeping the Collector base, or destroying it.
Ok, my one true and amazingly final complaint about ME2:
That broken neck jog Shepard does when you're running up to talk to Joker in the cockpit. He looks over at the two crewmen who are always conversing about banging whores and dying and shit and he continues his bouncy jog and his head looks like it's flopping around like a broken necked turkey. It's mesmerizing and horrifying at the same time.
There are also a few conversations, where the camera passes through someone's head. That's a little immersion breaking when you're staring at the back of some eyeballs and teeth during a conversation.
Yeah... it's worth it for the awesome cinematic camera movements you usually get flawlessly during conversations, though. The bug only happened three or four times out of, what, hundreds of conversations?
*loving sigh* I know, right? It feels so good when something you really look forward to lives up to your expectations and more. Something Hollywood hasn't given me in a while. I freaking love this game so much

WEll, I should say my only major real complaint is the lack of armor pieces you get. I mean, I got the Terminus armor for pre-ordering and that's cool and all, but I ended up using it for only one mission because the funny-factor of all the conversations being with that big hermetic helmet on wore off pretty fast and became.... distracting. Besides that one, I ended up finding only like 3 variations of each chest, shoulders, legs and head. Why develop such an awesome personalization feature if you're just gonna offer a few combinations of set up?

Finally was able to get the game this week. Started yesterday and am totally addicted. One of my favorite things was that I pretty much made my Shepard look exactly like he did in the first game just messing with the editor, only I gave him hair so that he has a slight change over his military buzz cut I gave him in the first game. First thing I did was went and got Garrus, I can't play Mass Effect without Garrus fighting beside me. I just did his loyalty mission, the followup conversation made me laugh so much. "I had reach, but she had flexibility."
Also I am totally messed up about the romance stuff. Part of me wants to romance Tali, the other part wants to just keep the character loyal to Ash. Call it the loyalist in me, but I don't feel right making my Paragon Shepard dump her after she sent him a letter saying she never wants to lose him again, even though I like Tali. Bah....

I actually find Miranda rather unattractive. Not sure what it is but when the light hits her face she seems almost sickly. Then again, I didn't find Ashley all that attractive either and look at me trying to stick with her.
Really the only characters I find really attractive in ME2 as Kelly and Aria, Tali I like because she has always had a cool personality.
