Conan O'Brien Leaving (AKA Fuck NBC)

I think that it was The Hollywood Reporter where I read that if NBC was so sure it was on the right to move The Tonight Show to 12:05 and be in compliance with Conan's contract they would have sued him for breach of contract long ago. They're not convinced that if this went to court a "we don't specify the time slot" loophole would really work against a "the time slot for the Tonight Show has not changed in 60 years" defense.

Apparently this means that although Leno will get the Tonight Show back, they'll avoid further confrontation by releasing Conan to appear on another network even before his contract expires.

Conan on the whole porno thing: "Yeah, in the movie I'd be having sex with a beautiful woman, and just as we're about to climax I get replaced by Jay Leno."

More on the Conan porno from himself: "I'm really considering this and I've come up with some possible titles for my first porno: "Crammin' O'Brien", "Coo-coo for Coco's Puffs", "Two Hosts, One Slot", "Conan's Mono Log", "Chin Deep", "Conan the Impaler", "The Splay Leno Show", "Conan gets the Late Shaft", "Carson Daly's Last Ball", "Laid Night with Jimmy's Phallus", "Changing Time Sluts", "In the Rear 3000", "Conan the Bangbarian", "Andy'll Try Him", "NBC Lawyer Gang Bang: The Backend Deals", "The Fistahood of the Traveling Timeslots"

"The Fistahood of the Traveling Timeslots"

I fucken LOLed hard on this one. The rest are awesome too.

What a terrible idea this all was. NBC should have had the balls to let one of them walk years ago but they had to try and have their cake and eat it too.

What about Andy and the Twitter Tracker Guy? Not to mention Max "The Perv" Weinberg? What happens to them? But yes, if Triumph is lost to NBC, there will be hell to pay. I'm talking mountains of burning doggie-doo at NBC's doorstep!

Considering Triumph has made appearances on shows not owned/aligned to NBC and for reasons not associated with NBC, it is clear that he is owned by Smigel. In fact, he was even used by Smigel in his TV Funhouse show on Comedy Central, which is clearly not owned by NBC and was created by Smigel. The only reason he WOULD be up in the air is if NBC was trying to buy the character off of him.

Apparently Conan had no interest in taking the bits and characters with him.
Which I am pretty much totally cool with. I honestly feel like his bits got pretty stale. Not as bad as leno but I didn't have much interest in his stuff after years and years of the same thing. This gives him a chance to do what he does best, write new stuff and show us how amazing he can be.

I'm not saying some of them aren't funny but I'm glad he's getting a chance to start from the ground up. I expect great things and am really hoping for comedy central although Fox would be fine.

Comedy Central would mean he'd have to go after Colbert at 12..... Isn't that what started all this :paranoid:
It's not really a matter of the time slot itself that was the problem... the problem was that Leno was supposed to step down, agreed to it, and then changed his mind when his new show tanked. I'm almost certain that Conan didn't make it an ultimatum that he receive the Tonight Show, but rather jumped at an opportunity that was presented to him. More importantly, putting Conan in that time slot on Comedy Central gives him a great lead in with an audience he's already a hit with, giving him a better chance to increase his ratings. Yes, it IS a step back, but it's also a chance for increased creative freedom by leaving network TV.

It's a ratings cut with a paycheck cut, but with more freedom. Whereas Fox would mean a chance at pretty much the same ratings as Tonight Show with a big money deal, but less freedom.

I think I'd be ok with either, really, I just want Coco back acting out his jokes.

Is Comedy Central really a realistic option, though? I mean, have they said anything about being interested? I know Fox has, although they themselves admit it'd be a hard accommodation, but is the comedy central premise just a hopeful pipedream of ours?

Yeah... during the whole Colbert/Stewart/Conan crossover in the writer's strike days Conan clearly joked about how his network ratings towered over the "little guys" at cable, and even though it was clearly a joke and he has nothing but respect for those guys, it rings true. I doubt he'd take a cable offer unless it was really juicy.

Let's hope Fox can make it work.

By the way... does anyone know of anyway to get a hold of old/classic Late Night episodes? I want my Conan fix when he's gone, and I never got to watch lots of his most infamous moments like the Chuck Norris lever or even the masturbating bear. I began watching regularly pretty late in the Late Night run.

I know there's random clips on youtube, but I was hoping there's a way to see whole episodes? Monologues and all?

He's only got 2 options if he wants to be on a big network again: CBS, Fox. CBS doesn't need another talk show so that is out. Fox could use the late night programing but they'd need to clear it with the affiliates first due to how Fox works as a network. He could maybe do something with the CW, but they are pretty flaky as far as a major network goes. Besides... at this point, ANYTHING is going to be a downgrade for Conan. Right now he just needs a venue to create, so he can do what he does best. If he gets an offer, I imagine he's going to jump for it.

Then again, he could just take some time off to write a book or something. He'd make millions if he wrote a tell-all about the behind the scenes decisions of the NBC executives and Leno.

They are not released legally in any way or form. Probably due to the sheer number of episodes, and the fact that every episode is dated after about 3 days.

Ok, I "acquired" the Late Night 10th anniversary special (Conan's, not Letterman's, duh) and it fucking rocked. It got me almost to tears, both for all the laughter and the knowledge that those days are gone now.

Fuck NBC.

Some monologue jokes may age horribly because they're mostly about current news... but the rest of the episode is always fuckin awesome, be it 1996 or 2005. That's what I like about Conan, his best bits usually come when you least expect it. He's one comedian that realizes the best comedy is the unscripted kind and is not afraid to let circumstances take their random yet hilarious course.

We need to send the 10th anniversary special to the Fox executive board, no one can watch that and not instantly want Conan. :(

Did that episode have pimpbot tell Tony Randal "I will cut you sucka" ??

The look on Tony Randal's face was priceless. So dry it was brilliant.

On the golden globes.... Richy Gervais shot a one liner that had me bawling.

"*loud sigh*.... let's get on with it before NBC replaces me with Jay Leno."

After reading this topic, it's nice to know that people won't give a butt fuck if Jay Leno is on at the same time as Conan. People will follow him to whatever channel he goes, and I know I'll be one of those people. Even though I get it a day late here in Australialand.
