Well, I'm reinstalling the game as I type. What servers are all you guys on? My old main was Horde side on Azjol-Nerub but I think I'd like to make a fresh start somewhere else.

When I played I was mainly Alliance on Steamwheedle Cartel. Debating a swap to Alliance Ysera if I get back into it with Cata. I'd really love to do Horde again, though...I dunno.

Everyone is always on different servers.
This is something they have said they want to fix. I am not sure how without making free server transfers (which would be cool, but I don't see them doing), but at least they are trying I guess. One thing I think they could do now with all the cross-server integration, is allow people from different servers to form groups and run dungeons together.

As for Baerdog, which side you thinking of starting fresh? Really the best thing you can do right now until Cataclysm is released is play whatever faction you didn't play the last time. It can feel like a totally different experience. If you have played both factions, try a race you never did before that interested you, and definitely a new class. Starting off fresh should mean a total clean slate. While I don't plan to make any new characters till Cataclysm, you can find me on US Tichondrius-Horde and Ghostlands-Alliance if you want to talk or get some tips.

Also, remember that new race/class combos are opening in Cataclsym. If you want any of these combos you are going to want to wait, figured I would list them for people that don't know.

Orc - Mage
Undead - Hunter
Tauren - Priest, Paladin
Troll - Druid, Warlock
Blood Elf - Warrior
Human - Hunter
Dwarf - Mage, Shaman, Warlock
Night Elf - Mage
Gnome - Priest

You know I have been thinking of starting my own guild soon, maybe we can all try to get one going. My only issue is I don't really see myself leaving my characters on Tichondrius for an extended period. I don't know if subjecting everyone to the mindset of Tichondrius would be very kosher either. ;)

I've played both but during my last WoW outing back in BC days I was Horde. I was thinking about going Alliance side this time around, probably draeni paladin or something. I'll take a look into Ghostlands and send you a PM if I decide to set up shop there.

Orc Mage is so tempting it hurts, but losing my loyalty to Trolls would hurt more. :(
Seen the new troll starting zone? Vol'jin finally gets to do something he wanted to do for a long time. Anyone here play the WC3 Demo Campaign? If not here is a refresher.

In the Campaign, while Thrall is sailing to Kalimdor, his ships get damaged in the Maelstrom. He lands on the island of the Darkspear Tribe, lead by the wise Sen'jin, and helps them fight off enemies including an Alliance force. After the battle, murlocs rise out of the ocean and capture everyone, including Thrall and Sen'jin, dragging them down to an underground cavern. Thrall escapes, but is unable to reach Sen'jin in time to stop the murlocs from sacrificing him to a Sea Witch. His dying wish is that Thrall save his people. When they make it to the surface the Sea Witch appears (in the form of a Banshee), and starts causing the nearby volcano to erupt, sinking the island into the ocean and threatening to take everyone with it. Thrall barely escapes fighting off the Sea Witch, and she swears revenge.

And now for the starting zone.

The Echo Isles are under attack by a rather large force of Naga. While you quest and kill these Naga, Vol'jin learns who sent them, the Sea Witch that sunk his island and killed his father over seven years ago. She has finally returned to finish what she started and destroy the Darkspear for good. You, Vol'jin, and two other NPCs fight her in her spirit naga form (and as a throwback to the demo campaign, she summons manifestations of her power that look like banshees.) and after what feels almost like a full on boss battle, you kill her and end her attempts to destroy the Darkspear. Vol'jin finally able to avenge his father's death.

That is what I am playing on Ghostlands right now. My wife and I are duo-ing as a Draenei Paladin and Draenei Priest because it allows us to get into dungeons instantly. :p Right now working our way through Outland.

Nice! I was looking at the realm stats for Ghostlands and noticed that it was pretty heavily dominated by the Horde. Is this going to be an issue grinding up through the levels or do all the fancy cross-realm dungon finders and PvP wotsits make it all pretty much moot these days?

I have to admit it's hard to tell. I hear in trade chat that we don't do well with Wintergrasp, but otherwise I seem to run into more Alliance while running around then I do Horde, way more then I do on Tichondrius which is pretty much all Horde dominated. Really, Ghostlands the population does not matter a huge amount, because it is PVE, and so you don't have to worry about the larger faction ganking you are every turn.

Yeah SR, I had watched the retaking/new starter zone stuff for Echo Isles and it's really awesome. A Troll Hunter is calling to me pretty hardcore right now, the only part that sucks is finding a place where an up-and-comer who still knows the game could get a casual raid spot eventually. That's what usually got me on new servers when I'd try to start over.

That's good to hear. Anyway, I rolled up a draeni paladin named Aureon just a few minutes ago.

So what are the must-have addons these days? Omen and Auctioneer still I'm guessing. Which others?

Ah an addon list. That is a tough one since I try to use a rather conservative interface. Here are a few of the ones I must-have.

Deadly Boss Mods, basically gives you information on bosses in dungeons so you know when it's about to throw an attack that will destroy you. Sometimes I feel it is cheating, but it will be needed later on to survive raids because they throw a lot of stuff at you.

Healbot, even if you don't plan to heal, just having a little window with various abilities allowing click casting has been a lifesaver. For instance, even though I am a Protection Paladin, I have most of my "hand" spells linked to Healbot cast clicks. So if my wife gets rooted, Hand of Freedom, or if that warlock is pulling aggro, Hand of Salvation. I also have it set for cleansing since my wife can't dispel poisons.

Auctionator, which is basically Auctioneer Lite. It automatically scans information on items and undercuts for you before posting, allows bulk posting, and also scans for the lowest PPI on materials you need, but does not have the large footprint of Auctioneer. Auctioneer still wins in features though, so if you plan to work the AH a lot, you will want it.

Postal, makes sending mail way less complicated, including save lists of alts, friends, and other people you send mail for future letters.

Omen is not really going to be important till you start raiding, because any tank worth a lick will hold threat, and any time you do lose it you can use the built-in threat UI to know. In the end the rest is up to you. You may wish to use a unit frame addon liked Shadowed, or a action button addon like Bartender4, or maybe even a bag consolidation addon like Bagnon. Lightheaded was an old favorite of mine in case a quest was confusing me, but with the built-in quest helper you don't really need it anymore.

A Troll Hunter is calling to me pretty hardcore right now, the only part that sucks is finding a place where an up-and-comer who still knows the game could get a casual raid spot eventually. That's what usually got me on new servers when I'd try to start over.
Maybe I really should consider starting a guild. I want to get more casually like-minded people to group with. People willing to do a small 10-man raid and wipe learning the place rather then rage at every turn when something goes wrong. That is what I had to deal with a lot on Tichondrius and why I don't really raid much now. I was actually teaching another guild how to raid some low end places awhile back but the guild didn't last, no one has patience anymore. Finding casual people on Tichondrius is like finding a needle on a beach.

I played with some RL friends for a long time, but two of our staple healers kept trying to push for hardmodes and we had some real prima-donnas. We were good for a 10m guild but not so good as to warrant attitudes. SWC is a stagnant server, so getting into a guild that sees more than Putricide's boot in their face means you know people or you blow people.

I'd be wiling to do a realm/race move to join. My current guild is okay, but not real social.

Or, you know, READ THE FIRST POST AND REASON I CREATED THIS THREAD!!

Be aware that you can only get RAF if he makes a brand new account. If he reactivated an old one you only would be able to use SoR.

Also, some new information about upcoming changes.

Dungeons are being redesigned to mesh better with the updated world.

Places like Sholomance remain exactly the same, but the various bosses from Scholomance make a large impression now outside the dungeon in the newly phased Andorhal. The explanation is that the Cult of the Damned, even following the death of the Lich King, keeps trying to carry on his work with a large chunk of the Scourge under their control, lead by Headmaster Gandling. Scholomance is also becoming a 4x instance rather then a 5x instance.

Stratholme is also the same, but with a few large upgrades to the creatures. Since the Scarlet Crusade in the Plaguelands has been destroyed, they changed all the crusaders on the living side into a group known as The Risen, who were killed and raised by a once again resurrected Dread Lord Balnazzar. Rivendare also survived, but supposedly not as the same Rivendare. He possessed another NPC in the zone, a Paladin named Aurius, and took over what Scourge remained in the city. All in all the changes merely kept the status-quo of the dungeon, but gave it a upgraded spin. As an added bonus, killing bosses causes Argent Crusade members to appear and start patrolling the halls, making it feel like you are taking over the city and liberating it.

One of the other large changes besides the upgraded stories, is that they are moving the majority of quest-givers for each dungeon just inside it. This makes it mesh better with the dungeon finder, allowing you to grab most of the quests once you pop the queue rather then having to keep them in your log hoping you get it. So far we have seen this used in Sholomance and Stratholme, and it is implied in Scarlet Monastery and a few others to be added soon.

One of my favorite new changes though is once again for Hunters, which as we all know are getting major revamps. Behold the new stable system.

Now a hunter can have a total of 25 pets. 5 active, and 20 inactive. You can switch out the active and inactive pets at any stable master in any village or city. You can switch between the 5 active pets anytime by using the Call Stabled Pet ability, which had it's cooldown removed. This means you can have 5 pets designed for certain situations and can freely switch them while out of combat, and 20 other pets just because who does not love collecting pets!? This, added with the focus system and removal of ammo, makes me very excited to dust off my old main once again.

Removal of ammo? guess I need to toss away my engineering profession. Arrows it the only engineering schematic that I make money on. But, I do love my parachutes and rocket boosts. But I'll be back at page one of just mining to pay the repair bills.

Engineering has always been considered more of the "fun" profession then profitable. You get a awesome mount, the ability to make another awesome mount, and various gadgets that are more about quality of life, like the various dimensional rippers, wormhole generators, jumper cables, parachutes and rocket boots, and let us not forget Jeeves, or the Dalaran Auction House. They are the only profession with activated enchants also, and soon may even be getting a unique gem slot mechanic called Cogs.

One thing I should mention though, even though ammo is getting removed, the ammo slot might remain and special "ammo styles" can be equipped like gear to change something about your shots. If that does happen you may still be able to make some money if they allow you to make those special ammos, the only difference is they would not be consumable. I have not heard much on that possible system in awhile though, so it may have been dropped.

I was reactivating an old account and completely forgot about the Scroll of Resurrection thing. Sorry man.

Anyway, money making seems like it's gotten a whole lot easier than it used to be. I put a stack of copper bars on the AH last night and woke up to find over 9.5g sitting in my mailbox. I was quite pleased.

I would also not mind joining a HF guild. Being on Ghostlands would be nice and convenient but I'm still a low enough level where it's not a big issue to start over elsewhere.

I think Scythe is the logical choice to spearhead this. I tried it once right before I gave up the game.

Scythe, name the server and faction and I'll bring over my rogue. He's new and only 77 so his gear sucks.

Let me think about it before I make a full choice. Have to be honest I never spearheaded a guild before, as I was always much more of a follower. I consider making one mostly because I wish to find other casual players willing to give up quick progression and dramatic environments for simple fun, rather lax play where everyone is not afraid to take their time.

One thing though, my rather OCD nature means I don't like spreading around to many servers. I have sort of made Tichondrius my official Horde server, and Ghostlands my official Alliance server. If I do make a guild it would have to be on either of those. Each one has a plus and minus to it really, so you can give me your opinions on it.

Tichondrius-Horde

The community can be rather unforgiving. Player-Vs-Player means you will be ganked a lot. The server itself is very pro-Horde, so we almost always own Wintergrasp. Economy is pretty steady. I will have lots of character with every profession maxed for a support network, including a personal guild (The Great Ones) that I can convert back to a regular guild from my banking guild. Already has four bank slots I purchased personally. Don't ever plan on being anywhere near the best, to many progression minded players that will make you look like a newb.

Ghostlands-Alliance

Community seems more reserved. Have not played high enough to know for sure though. Alliance seems to be disadvantaged but not at the level of Tichondrius. Only have one mid-level character, so don't have as much of a support network. PVE means leveling experience would be less stressful as you don't have to worry about ganking. Overall would probably be a more "fresh" experience.

Really, even though it's a bit more stressful, I would choose Tichondrius, just because I love having the support network of my characters and am used to the PVP. I mostly made the Alliance character so that when I feel like it, I can log on and experience questlines I can't on the Horde. My wife has a Draenei Priest she loves on Ghostlands though, so you never know, she might drag me over there someday for a longer period of time. ;)

On the one hand, I think Ghostlands might be more appropriate for a casual guild due to the more laid-back nature of the server. However, there is something to be said for having the support network that you have on Tichondrius. If we do set up shop on Tichondrius, I have a level 70 orc shaman from back in the day that I'll probably move over. His gear is shit, but his fighting spirit is strong.

Well I want to get opinions from those who wish to start up, because it would not be fair for me to just choose for everyone. I gave my vote for Tichondrius because I feel I can better help people there, but I am willing to try and give more time to Ghostlands if people prefer that side of it. My biggest fear is finding enough people to fill up a 10 man, really, more then where I go.

The big thing will be finding people outside the forum. From past attempts we know that the forum just can't support a guild on it's own. If you are serious about it, you need to make sure you or someone else is serious about recruiting new people.

Oh, and I may join you guys if you get it going. I still have my gnome dk on Ghostlands from our previous attempt, and if we go horde I may try to roll a shaman. Haven't played one of them past 10 yet. I have no preference.

That is definitely important, but we need to give some people a chance to even start and level. I am certain no matter which server we join, if we recruit someone already at end game they are going to "drift" if we are not ready for raiding. That means we would have to recruit a team to raid without the leveling players, and so once those people do level, we won't have enough room to get them in unless other "core" raiders drop. I find guilds die either due to lack of people to raid, or too many people that want to raid and can't. I want to avoid that.

So does anyone lean either way to either server? I was hoping to get a good feel over which one to consider in the end, but we have not really narrowed it down. I might just end up saying "Join me on Tichondrius". ;)

I wouldn't recruit raiders. Try to sell the guild as a leveling and casual guild. You just need enough people so that when you log in it's not a ghost town.

Well, my main server isn't something I'd reccomend, but I play with about 4 RL friends on Draenor Alliance, and we always have to PuG raids, if we had 5 more people we'd have our own 10 man for Cata. ;)

Damn this lull, is there going to be a pre-cata patch like the last two expansions, that changes the talents and betters the leveling? If so when?

While tempting, I don't think I can handle leveling another character on another server. I can be a little strange about how I setup my characters. I would maybe transfer off Ghostlands to Draenor, but my wife would kill me, and I am broke. :(

Yes there is going to be a pre-cataclysm patch, including events. The two events we know about are the retaking of Echo Islands and the invasion of Gnomeregan, but we also have rumors of events happening in Thunderbluff, Orgrimmar, and Stormwind. The events will actually occur before the pre-cata patch that changes the world. Sadly I don't have a time table for you. It will happen when they want it to happen.
