PS3 retail sales overtake 360?

Yep, more people want Blu-Ray. Had the 360 ever added the functionality, I'm sure it would have buried the PS3. That coming from someone who prefers the PS3 as a gaming system.

Yeah, it was pretty much inevitable with the Blu-Ray thing. Sony gambled big that they would be able to extend the life of the PS2 long enough that they could be prepared to dominate the tail-end of the current console generation with tighter hardware and Blu-Ray, and it completely paid off (though XBL probably delayed it for a while).

Yeah, color me not surprised either. Why not pay a little more for that blu-ray player when it can also be your video game/netflix/etc player.

Well M$ still has more units shipped to suppliers then $ony... and they're selling more in the US even now (as per link in my OP).

But the race is at an interesting place...

I think I've said it before, I have not played a console video game since PONG.

I just looked at the products and the Sony looked superior. I figured other people would see it the same way.

I'm using that analogy because betamax was the superior format yet VHS managed to dominate the market... hence... thinking that people will pick the superior product simply because it's better isn't necessarily the case.

Didn't VHS have longer run time?!

And the PS3 came out a year after 360 and at almost 2x the price...

Yes, but Beta was superior in picture and auidio quality and in many facets of recording.

True, but Microsoft dropped the ball so hard with their Xbox 360 GPU failures (red rings of death) and they supported the losing format between HDDVD and Blu Ray... I'm not surprised the PS3 has made such an incredible sales gain.

And obviously the difference wasn't enough to make up for the lack of play time...

RRoD's are pretty old, and so is Blue Ray...

IMO the price was always the problem, and now that the difference isn't as large it's showing.

Red Rings of Death still happen.
Damn true... granted the Jasper chipset is LIGHT YEARS better than the very first motherboards... it's still prone to failures. The Vejle chipset on the Xbox 360 S is too new to really have much data on it's long term lifespan (or so I have observed from my friends who have them anyways).

I have a couple of diehard 360 gamer friends (who live together) and have a total of 6 360's in their house right now from their collective red ring adventures.

I gave up after the first one.

I bought a 360 core unit when they first came out and actually made it last about 3.5 years before it died on me (which of course was well past the free replacements they were handing out). I replaced it with an Xbox arcade version (Jasper chipset) and it's been good ever since.

I have 4 dead Xbox 360's in my basement that I've inherited from friends lol.

Blu-Ray players WAS expensive and PS3 is a better solution. Blu-Ray player + gaming system. It was a win-win for customer (but a lost for Sony since PS3 are under selling cost) We just saw you can buy a Blu-Ray player for less than a 100$ now :)

The idea was that your average consumer, Joe Sixpack to borrow a phrase, might go to the video game store to buy a console for himself or his kids. Keep in mind this is around 2007.

He probably doesn't give a shit about Blu-Ray.
He probably isn't gonna hook his console up to the internet and tus doesn't care about built-in wifi.
If he cares about video games at all, he might be swayed by either consoles exclusives, but 360 and PS3 share a lot of the same library.

But ultimately, if he isn't part of the small tech-nerd/"hardcore gamer" audience that cares about a lot of that shit, he's gonna see that he can pick up a 360, Call of Duty 2 and an extra controller for the price of a PS3.

Done.

Yeah, but does that player support all of the Blu-Ray features? Not everyone cares about whatever BD-Live is, but last time I looked at the list of bare-minimum requirements to put the Blu-Ray logo on, versus what is possible on the PS3 and other players, there was a lot of stuff. More important than that is compatibility. Some of the earliest players to drop under $149 are no longer compatible with the latest discs, and don't have firmware updates to fix them.

I understand. I think that is why PS3 are still selling as a gaming console AND Blu-Ray player (they did won after all) It is a win-win for the consumer since it does update, has all the features AND can play 3D :)

link?

Yeah, I had a $500 game rig. Then 2 years later I popped in a $170 card and can play most games at full settings.

This is Nvidia's guide. I think you'd get even better numbers using a 460 rather than a 550 or even going with price competitive ATI cards.

It also doesn't hurt that the Cryengine 3 is easily the single most aggressively optimized gaming engine ever developed. It will squeeze every ounce of performance it can out of any machine.

I remember thinking about getting a PS3 when it came out. But the cost, the fact I didn't have an HD-TV and that there were honestly very few games you could play on it all turned me away. That last one was very damning for the system early in. It's only in the last couple of years that some of their exclusive titles have begun getting really good. God of War III (and the I & II collection), Little Big Planet, Uncharted, it's starting to really spruce things up.

Plus, I've said it a million times before, but some of the best games coming out these days have been the smaller, downloadable games. Several of them have been PSN exclusive, like all the Double Fine games (Stacking, Costume Quest). Plus, playing online is free, unlike Live.

Now that the price is down, people are starting to pick the system up. It's not that the 360 isn't a bad system by any means. But you look at the three systems and this is kinda what I see about them: the Wii is primarily kids or more specifically family; it's definitely for the most casual of gamers. The 360 is for the hardcore gamers who want their games big, loud and violent (Halo, Gears of War, etc; basically the FPS crowd for the most part). The PS3 is kind of a happy medium between the two. You've got a lot of FPS games that are on the 360 as well, along with a few exclusive like Killzone. But then you've got a couple of games for the casual gamer like Little Big Planet.

The lack of HDTV in the homes when 360 and PS3 came out really hurt both systems early on. I do kick myself that I did not buy a PS3 with my TV. 2 years on and I still don't have a console game system.
