The EPIC WIN Thread 3: SON OF EPIC

But then she would have to look for a new boyfriend.

I just never really figured the Streets of Toronto to be that tough...
Really depends on the area. Jane & Finch, for example, has a notorious reputation.
Generally, its a really nice city though. For being as big a city as it is, areas like the Annex and Queen St W (my favourite spots) especially are actually shockingly friendly.

Classes are over, finals are done, and last night I turned in the last paper of my undergrad. It's all over but the waiting for credits to transfer and be processed back home.

I'm done, baby! Time to party and travel for a month and a half.

Make sure to run out the door screaming "FREEEEEEEDOOOOM!"

What I like best, checkeredhat, are the people in the comments section trying to turn it into a metaphor for other stuff. :D
I know! I love it! There is definitely a lot of metaphor in there though, so some of them are right.

Thing is, I think everyone of us working on it had our own idea of what it was a metaphor for, so there is no one correct answer. We wanted to make a film that would spark exactly this kind of dialogue among viewers, so I am super pleased, because in my mind this is complete and utter vindication.

I am still fighting back various sites and commentors that seem to think I was the creator just because its hosted on my Vimeo account. My friend and colleague on this film is at this moment coding a promotional website for the film so we can get proper due credit to everyone involved. I didn't think the film would explode in popularity like this, and certainly not this quickly. I was hoping we'd get the site up before people really took notice.

Tickets purchased. Registration completed.

On the 29th, I am going to Montreal for a month to continue studying French. And most of it is free thanks to a bursary!

I am pleased.

Yep, 6-1 in favor of Finland.

EAT YOUR HEART OUT, SVEDUPELLET!

I was also a bit surprised when Russia knocked Canada out of the tournament. Russia's performance in their last game against Finland was not too convincing; plenty of individual skill (Ovechkin, Kovalchuk), pretty much f*ck-all in terms of team play.

Looking forward to squaring off with Canada in next year's final ;)

Man I wish I had been able to watch that match tonight. I did catch the bronze medal game between Czech and Russia though, which was amazing. A buncha drunk Czechs in a beer garden make for an enthusiastic crowd.

I'm moving tomorrow. This is probably my last night ever sleeping at my parents' house... or at least needing to. After crying like a bitch and hugging them and thanking them for all their help, I feel very ready to get on with this move. :D

I was going to queue up "Wide Open Spaces..." after reading that.

What Tin says is correct--these days publishers want around 100k (90k appears acceptable, that's roughly 300 pages), seeing that readers are less apt to pick up what they consider shorter books unless it's by a known author already. And then to make matters worse if you're planning a larger story, they tend to cap at 125k for new writers, so there's a sweet spot you're "supposed" to hit. That said, I see plenty of submissions going for less than 70k, and the artist in me says the piece should be as long as it needs to be, no more, no less. So business standpoint: write more; artist standpoint: write it as the story should be.

Well, yesterday, I went back and added a good chunk to an older chapter. Pushed the total word count to about 70,800. Maybe my trusted editors will give me ideas to expand it but I'm pretty happy with that word count, for the moment.

At the very most, I could see pushing it to 80,000. After that, it'd be just useless padding. With an action/character driven story like this, that would just muddle down its fast pace.

To answer your question, though, Tin: I'm honestly not sure. It's a hard-boiled detective type story, but in a superhero setting. I guess sci-fi...ish? It's hard to say. I was heavily inspired by Simon R. Green's Nightside series, which is fantasy detective, along with John Zakour's sci-fi detective series. Both series are relatively short, certainly in comparison to the ridiculously thick fantasy or sci-fi books on the shelf. I think mine falls into about the same word count or maybe a little lower.

70,000 is a little on the short side, maybe, but better that than a 150,000 word juggernaut. Of course, most of what I know relates to the YA market, for which shorter works are almost always preferred as opposed to longer ones.

I'm groggy, but I go looking around. Seems that almost 7,000 viewers found it last night. It got posted on this site, is why: http://thedailywh.at/2011/05/14/animated-short-of-the-day-11/#disqus_thread

This is awesome!
That was a beautiful film. Was there a thread about it somewhere? Search just says "Sun Day" is too common.

I love the score. It goes so well with the animation. Very nice!

Not that I am aware of. I have posted it once here and once in the Awesome Videos thread, but I just don't really post my stuff here too often. Someone else might have posted it though.

Also, thank you!

Yeah, that was composed and performed by Eddie, the same guy that made the "Dinosaur Battle Town" film I posted in the Awesome Videos Thread. Dude is seriously talented.
