[Webcomic] PVP Discussion

If I remember correctly, Robbie just got rich by winning it big in the lottery. So the latest comic doesn't actually work since Robbie's not "a success". He was just goddamn lucky.
I'm still waiting for the inevitable arc where Robbie loses it all and goes back to living on the PvP couch with Jase.

I think he was referring to Robbie's rich friend, not Robbie himself.

Today, Cole continues to be the strip's antagonist, in accordance with Gustology.

Ah, comicgenesis used to be a fun place with a lot of activity. I remember Van Douchebag. I know a lot of the members didn't like him but I found him amusing.

Remember a few pages back when I said that PVP had gotten it's groove back?
Kurtz shit all over that pretty much after I posted.
I realized I hadn't read PVP in a few weeks and didn't miss it. When I came to this forum and saw this thread at the top it'd serve as a reminder to check out the comic. When this thread dropped to the bottom of the page it never occurred to me to check it.

The only thing we really should expect of Kurtz is inconsistency.

When he's good, his stuff is really good.

When he's not, his stuff is fecal matter.

All right, I did some digging. Here's an image of the guy who Kurtz was saying was a rip-off of Skull (only he was blue)

And here's the girl who he claimed was a rip-off of Jade

\\

This was apparently enough to warrant legal action from him. But I guess he thinks it's okay for him to blatantly and admittedly rip off characters from other media.

There's an old comicgenesis forum topic on the subject here.
Actually the little redhead's first few appearances had her doing the "Jade frowning with arms crossed" a lot, too, before Kurtz got on the guy for it. So I can't say it was entirely off base - the wizard also looked quite a bit more Brent-like. But that was within the first few weeks of Spells and Whistles.

Ugh, Kurtz's latest rant. He's the one who needs a reality check. He has no grasp on how unusual his position in comics is.

"All without any real grasp of anatomy or storytelling."

Wow, Kurtz actually admits it. I'm trying to remember any PVP storyarc that has a clear conclusion.

Yeah. That's amazing that he posts that, immediately beneath a character that is an admitted swipe from another intellectual property, and doesn't feel the least bit of irony.

The first half of his rant is stunningly correct though, right up until he gets to the "make your own characters" part.

Not true. I knew CG (the old timers call it "CG" or ceej) before it got taken over by the hipsters. They really ruined it.

For the record, I never knew about it until yesterday...
You mean Keenspace? :p

Anyway, I'm disappointed in that rant. It was sorely lacking in classic quotable Kurtzisms. For all that he didn't understand about what he's saying, he didn't state any of it memorably. Sad.

I don't. Even in 2005, that was a haven for hipsters.
It was a great place when it was Keenspace. We had a blast in the forums. Some of the art threads (where we'd do a comic jam which included many of the forum members) were a blast. Around 2005 it got pretty bad and I ended up searching for a new forum. Found the PvP forum to be really interesting and stuck around. Sad empty shell of what it once was.

That's pretty much my story right there. I can count on one hand the number of people I kept any contact with, and they too have pretty much disassociated themselves from that place.

You mean where he's summarizing facts that recently occurred?

I wonder how many of the artists he just criticized already have their own characters, and are doing Marvel sketches at conventions in order to support themselves long enough for their own characters to catch on.

Well at least this afternoon he offered a half-assed apology for so many late strips. He's still gonna be late, of course.

So, Kurtz tweets:
"It's fascinating the email I'm receiving over my "reality check" post. Is there a perception I happened upon success through luck or fate?"
"Many feel I succeed only because I started so early in the history of webcomics. Nobody arguing wants to argue I earned what I have."

Mr. Kurtz, you are a tremendous talent, with skill in both drawing and humor but you're also a lazy jerk. Yes, your success is partly due to happenstance. While your talent has seen you succeed despite your chronic lateness and your incredible ability to offend others, there are many who have just as much talent who have not succeeded to anywhere near the same level. When it comes to fame and fandom, there is a great element of chance. Some memes propagate, while others fizzle out, and often it doesn't have anything to do with how funny or culturally relevant they are. Fame, she is a fickle mistress.

If you were talented, driven and personable, then I would little doubt that you would have succeeded eventually, chance or not. There are many I respect who have all three of these, and more, who have succeeded, and it's clear they would have to have immensely bad circumstances in order to not succeed. However, when someone is only talented, and does not show a willingness to be disciplined in their work, or an ability be consistently nice to their fans and competitors, then their success is based on the chance that they can build a following before they lose it to apathy or aggravation.

It is both chance and effort that combined to make you the success you are Mr. Kurtz. Don't shy away from this truth, it is true for a great number of successes in this world. Let it be a reminder to have humility from your position of greatness. You have done great things, and I have enjoyed a great many laughs because of your work, but do not think to condescend to other artists who have not succeeded simply because you have. Be proud that your talent, and the time you've spent developing it, has allowed you to take great advantage of the opportunities that have come your way, but be humble and never forget that those same opportunities have not presented themselves to every artist, and it is not your skill that necessarily made all those opportunities available to you.

I like how he doesn't bring up the fact that he criticized people for not making their own characters and his current comic crew atm.

And then Tuesday Brent and Cole walked up to it to find it was a statue the guy had placed in their office for decor.

No matter what Scott says on twitter I think stealing a current character from Parks and Rec for his show is both cheap and stupid.

I groaned to high heaven when I read his justification using Dubbelosix from Asterix. One of the key features of Asterix beyond it's immediate main plot (Asterix's adventures) was the secondary parodying of real (mostly but not always French) celebrities/politicians.

What Scott is doing isn't parody, it's more like a straight transfer of a character who doesn't have anything remotely resembling the iconic impact of Sean Connery. It's just cheap.

And he keeps saying, oh, no, he's a homage to LOTS of other people.

No. He's not. He's a cheap copy of the same guy. But this is classic Kurtz. He gets super offended and pissy with anyone who dares to call him out on it. Because he is the TASTEMAKER.
