I disagree. Relm is a fantastic character, just learn to use her correctly. She's got the best magic stats in the game and thus she can dominate with her spells if built right. Have her equipped with fake mustache and sniper eye relics with a brush weapon equipped. In battle have her either use control, and if control doesn't work use magic, she's good with magic. Control is a trump card with 50/50 chance of working but if you get it to work it could be useful especially when the opponent controlled takes out its allies and you don't have to waste MP fighting them.
1: I used her correctly, she had uses but Control was worthless compared to higher end on the list character's special powers. Her best use was Magic and there were much better choices for magic users. Control was also 100% useless against bosses.

Umaru IMO isn't a real character in the game just a bonus character and thus I consider him as such.
So was Gogo and his mimic ability made him one of the strongest characters in the game, so using the -he was a bonus character- just isn't justifiable.

I used to think Gau sucked hard, then near the end of the game I grinded a few of his Rage skills and when he came back... he was amazing.
Gau had some of the strongest -free- abilities in the game when he came back. Meteor and his Wind Heal were amazing and he needed no resource.
As for -
Any character could be good if used well- I will mostly agree with but my point still stands, no matter how good you use the lower end characters, they won't compare to how powerful the upper end characters were when also used correctly.
Again,
FF6 is an amazing game and one of my personal favorites, the inital point was that even the greats in the series had serious flaws, while the later games had great strengths that most people over looked. I think the issue with the later ones vs the early ones was that the early ones were very weak on gameplay and amazing on story where as the later games were the exact opposite.
I just loved Rinoa and Zell.
I loved the cast of
FF8 too, but
FF7 did feel like an overall better game when compared side-to-side.
