A.I. is B.S.

That said, I did just load up one of Meta's LLMs into LM Studio and try to tease out any indication at all that any bits of my books were lurking in its subconscious, and failed to get anything out of it.

Whatever AI LLM Perchance uses also has no idea who killed Randall's mentor. It hallucinated Alaric and Mordred, under multiple attempts.

Also I asked it what "Dilbert Pinkerton, from City of Smoke and Mirrors by Nick C. Piers" had for a profession, and it claimed he was a cartographer. Then I asked again, and it claimed he was a detective... in Victorian London, whose ever-present magnifying glass was his signature accessory, and a charismatic man with a flair for the dramatic. No mention at all of him being an anthropomorphic armadillo.

I'm not sure if it's comforting or disappointing that it can't find the information.

Dill would probably find it hilarious. "Heh. I'm dramatic, sure, but I don't got a lot of flair to it. I'm more a meat and potatoes dramatic kinda guy."

To be fair, being anthropomorphic armadillo is not his job, so why should it mention that? Are you that specist that it's the only important thing about him be should be mentioned every time?

Sorry, I probably should have said that everything after "victorian london" came up in followup queries. I had the AI give a detailed description of him. It never mentioned he was an armadillo, though it doubled down on the victorian image by saying he was never seen without his top hat.

I know there are a lot of artists here and you know I’ve always gone out of my way to make sure when I need art I commission. But I’ve been burned so much lately that I’m leaning towards using an AI image generator to help illustrate Ironwood. I feel dirty but I’d have complete control and it wouldn’t cost me an arm or leg.

Am I a terrible person for this?

Depends on what you are using it for. I don't know what Ironwood is, but I can say if it's something meant for other people, I personally would be turned off by something I saw using ai generated images in place of art.

In my opinion, this is entirely a conscience question.
Technically, any use of any A.I. image generation tool for any purpose whatsoever is "bad" because there is no way to confirm whether all of it's training data was "ethically sourced," meaning that every time you generate an image, you are potentially using another person's work without their permission.
That said, it is nigh-impossible to operate in today's society without enabling/supporting something that was the product of uncompensated labor (clothes, electronics, food, etc), so I suppose the ultimate answer to that question is entirely up to you and how you think it will make you look to others.

It's my TTRPG. I've tried three times to get an actual artist to illustrate and it was either that there was no way I could afford it (we're talking tens of thousands of dollars - at least a thousand per illustration), getting strung along & then completely ghosted, and (my favorite) finding out that the guy who wanted the job was a stalker of someone I knew and that he probably took the job just to get closer to her.

I just paid $75 or so to a guy on Fiverr for a custom illustration for my website. I used A.I. to generate a rough approximation of what I wanted and described a bit what else it needed. The dude knocked it out of the park. (His work was definitely not A.I. and I would recommend him heartily.) I can get the link to the dude's Fiverr page after I get home.

A good Fiverr artist? Been burned there more than anywhere. But I trust YOU.

Ehhh, my hot take on this is that you don't need to spend tons of money on art for a home tabletop game, unless it's a thing everyone in the group agrees to share cost on. Running a game alone is already a ton of work and time. Getting really nice art is fun and nice, but shouldn't be a thing you feel like you have to do, especially for something that will never be seen outside your group of friends.

(But also if this is still about maps, I can maybe help some)

Ah shit, sorry Dave, I completely forgot about that! Though if it makes you feel any better, my preliminary sketches were garbage and not worth showing

"Tens of thousands of explicit AI-generated images, including AI-generated child sexual abuse material, were left open and accessible to anyone on the internet, according to new research seen by WIRED. An open database belonging to an AI image-generation firm contained more than 95,000 records, including some prompt data and images of celebrities such as Ariana Grande, the Kardashians, and Beyoncé de-aged to look like children."

I wish I could say i was surprised.

Ah, a South Korean site. Considering SK is home to the Nth room scandal, I'm not surprised.

(Also, in the interests of fairness, I should note that right now Taiwan is also embroiled in a child porn scandal, in which a website allegedly sold customized images/videos of underaged girls doing stuff.)
