a Trump vs Clinton United States Presidential Election in 2016

Who do you vote into the office of USA President?

  • Total voters
    48
And now we learn that Sarah Palin is being looked at for a cabinet position. She's not qualified for a kitchen cabinet position.
I mean, maybe a few positions on a kitchen counter or sturdy table, but yeah, definitely not a cabinet position...

I've seen a number of friends pushing for the electoral college to be faithless electors and install Hillary instead of Trump. The justification is that she won the popular vote, so it really is the people's will.

I can't support this.

As abhorrent as I find the results of this election, we cannot simply choose to ignore or over rule them. If we do, what makes us any better than any dictator or junta in a banana republic? Worse than that, though, is that doing it for good reasons provides a precedent for someone else to do it for selfish reasons. I hate what this election has brought and I fear what it will bring. But if go with faithless electors and throw out the results of the election, we are no longer a Republic. I will oppose every measure the new administration brings to take away people's human rights. I will vote against them in the midterm elections to take away their majority mandate.

But I will not throw away the principles of our Republic and the ideal that the citizens' voice matters because I am unhappy with the results of this election.

A sampling of Chinese netizen comments translated from Chinese on trump:

褚明宇:
Trump’s win is in no way a victory for the Republican party. Trump is a fake Republican who is actually an independent. He is much stronger than those other weak lunatics in his party. He has no principles and no firm beliefs — and this is exactly what made him so attractive (to his followers).

V微观艺术:
A year ago, no one thought he could win. Two years ago, few people on earth had heard of his name. Trump teaches us that if no one respects you, you must respect yourself first.

汉族之声:
Many people say Trump is the gravedigger of the USA. I just want to say that the great prosperity of the USA does not lie in its diverse culture, but in the pioneering spirit of its white Americans. It must first be said that only after achieving greatness did it begin to attract talent from all across the globe. Only by setting aside politics can the USA properly welcome new immigrants.

JOY_YERAN:
(Regarding his acceptance speech) How is it that upon becoming president, he starts acting like a president; so much more proper.

M_玛琪朵朵花:
I have a dream. I want to be the President of United States in 2050. Although I am a Chinese, I am inspired by Trump!

胡语文:
Our bull market just began.

haha9906:
Don’t take China to be a hypothetical enemy. Take care of your own country’s problems first. Don’t provoke and cause trouble in the Asia-Pacific region.

shawn_hsiung:
Here comes the American dream.

建议永封:
Let us closely unite with comrade Trump as the core of the central committee of the Republican party, who raises up high the great flag of American capitalism; with one mind, struggle arduously to make America great again! Trump’s core position and authority must be preserved, for this is the unified goal of all the people of the United States, its parties, its military, everyone.

林奇视角:
In China, the term “world police” has a negative connotation and is often used to both ridicule and criticize the United States. Now that Trump is elected, the USA won’t inadvertently stay in the role as “world police”, something to which many Chinese cheer for. Something they seemingly don’t realize is that China benefits from the USA acting as the “world police”. If we lose this “world police”, China’s troubles will only grow.

伊卡洛斯Lucie:
Just found out that Trump won the US Presidential election, and for a moment, I was speechless… Trump doesn’t have any political experience, and doesn’t understand diplomacy. I think that now he is elected, rich people in the US will continue to get richer as the poor people continue to get poorer. Okay, maybe two levels of differentiation is going too far…

透见闻:
Now that Trump is elected, the end of US imperialism is nigh! Haha! The entire world can now dump its surplus production capacity into the US. The entire world can now bully US President Trump who doesn’t understand international politics. Hahaha

啊暴阿暴:
Trump’s victory and the UK referendum deciding to leave the EU accurately reflects the fact that the people just want a peaceful and stable life. People would rather fulfil their own lives than try to be politically correct.

Going back to my previous point about being able to surf this wave, I think I'm really starting to re-evaluate my personal politics after this election. So many of the things I base my vote on don't really effect me.

LGBT rights? I'm a straight white man. Doesn't effect me.

Civil rights laws? White man. Doesn't effect me. Shit in fact I may do even better with more bigotry in this country.

Anti-Muslim legislation? Not a problem. White man. Could easily pass for a bible-thumper when I need to.

Welfare? My wife and I both have graduate degrees in highly technical fields. Doesn't directly effect me.

Environment? I make enough money to never have to live in a polluted area. Not my problem.

Climate change? It probably won't actually start killing people for a century, and I'll be long dead by then. I also have enough money to move to more desirable locations if rising sea levels threaten us. And hell, seeing as I work in oil and gas I may actually make some extra money.

Freedom of choice on abortion? Again. Man. Doesn't really effect me and if my wife does accidentally get pregnant we have the resources to raise a child we didn't plan for. Not my problem.

Health insurance? I get great health insurance through work. Not my problem.

This election has made me realize how most of my voting priorities haven't actually done anything to help me. They've always been about trying to help other people.

I mean sure, if I took the long view then of course I think these things help grow our country in the best way possible and it would ultimately be in my interest. But that seems kind of hard, and in the long run we'll all be dead, so why not grab what I can while I can?

Now I'm just out for me. The coming trade wars? Im excited. The inevitable recession that will bring on should knock down a lot of property values and allow me to get some great firesales.

The reduction of environmental regulations is definitely going to be a big boon for my industry, so I should be expecting some good years ahead for me and mine.

Reduction in education spending will be a huge benefit. Less people for me to compete with and worse public schools will ultimately benefit my children since I can afford to send them to private schools. So they'll be guaranteed a much better track.

And immigration. Oh thank god for immigration reform. Do you know how many engineers out there are from foreign countries? My grad program was 90% foreigners. Without them in the way it will be so much easier to excel at work.

I've spent the last 15 years voting based on how it could help others. Time for me to look out for myself. I need the kind of politics that make things easier for me, because the only route to American exceptionalism is to lower every hurdle as much as I can. I am entitled to exceptionalism. I guess I'm a republican now.

Please don't. There are many good people who voted against trump that are going to suffer.

I don't see what everyone's problem is. So what if the weakest amongst us get hurt the worst. They could always just eat their own babies. Seems like a workaround for the whole abortion thing too.

I get that you're being edgy, but your post before last reads like the thought process of a some of my anti-altruist/objectivist acquaintances who aren't NAP-obsessed. You sound plausible, not extreme. If A Modest Proposal had talked about enslaving more Africans as a solution to economic woes, it wouldn't have worked as satire.

And this is why so many people in America are scared. Because they're not you. Because they don't have all the advantages, successes, or privledges you've been fortunate to have.

And it's because of people like you who only care about themselves that those people are scared. Because you're in a position where you could make a difference for other people but don't because it doesn't affect you.

Ok now I get that you're kidding, but the earlier post really seems like it could've been serious.

I pretty heavily alluded to Jonathan Swift in my last post and you guys are asking if it's satire.

See this right here is why we need to in set more in education :p[DOUBLEPOST=1478805111,1478804964][/DOUBLEPOST]

Ahh you got it, and that's a fair point. In my mind as I wrote it I could have sworn it had just enough absurdity in it to pass as satire, but I guess it didn't.

What does it say about us that what I said there comes across as a plausible argument for becoming a republican?

Read a book people! You're making us look stupid!

*sigh* Fine. I'm an idiot. I'm sick of sarcasm. I'm sick of people joking about this shit for laughs. I'm sick of what this world is turning into.

And it's just going to get worse. It was already getting worse before, but now people will feel emboldened and entitled to this behaviour.

This isn't a world I want to live in anymore.

It wasn't written as a joke, or sarcasm, or cynicism really, it was meant as satire in its original meaning, and there is a difference, but I don't have the best writing skills.
