Gas Bandit's Political Thread V: The Vampire Likes Bats

No, seems it is supposed to be french: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parler#History

Isn't it more like Par-leh ? Parl-lay is more how english people say it after hearing it instead of reading it.

As to the first thing, huh. That's silly. Parlor -> Parler makes sense in a Tumbler -> Tumblr, grinder -> grindr, whatever fashion. Usoing just "Parler" is like naming your program "Talk". Very useful.

As to the second, the problem is most anglophones have a lot of issues pronouncing any -ee sound without adding the "y" to the end of it. It's the long, open vowel of hey, way, wait, hay, gate, but without the ending blow whose name in English I forget. It's one of the most recognizable tells of an American speaking French or Dutch.

I could get on discord and say it :) I’m afraid that I don’t know how to spell phonetically. Apologies if I mangled it.
I was going to say something about it being your language so you should be able to... but then i remembered it's english, where the same combination of letters makes different sounds based on the star alignment of the month/day/year when the word entered the vernacular...

Yeah the Pirates movies are actually saying “parley,” which is an English word meaning “Let’s have a chat about this” (or can refer to the chat itself) and which is itself an Englishification of the French “parler,” but not the same Englishification that got us “parlor” (or “parlour”) which refers to the room itself where we would have those chats.

I speak it, but certainly not an expert.

Steve Bannon reminds me he was a big part of Gamergate.

Which also reminds me that both Gamergate and Comicsgate basically imploded when people stopped giving a fuck about them and they turned on each other.

Kinda hoping that happens with Trump and his swarm of Republicans. I've said this before, but once Trump finally leaves, I guarantee he'll throw as many people under the bus as he can to save his own ass. Including his own family.

This thread is fascinating. A focus group of voters who were leaning Biden but went Trump in the last two weeks before the election. This is how tremendously fucked up and willfully stupid America is. A selection of the points I found most interesting:

I read about that. Now that they have their own “private” platform with Parler, it’s very much going down like that point in Ronald Dahl’s The Witches where the leader says, “You may now remooff your wigs/gloves!“

I will YET AGAIN refer to the Paradox Of Tolerance, which explicitly states that in order for an atmosphere of tolerance to exist, those who preach INtolerance must be suppressed. Hard. Otherwise they will work to codify and legitimize their intolerance at every opportunity, making their intolerance harder and harder to dislodge as time goes on.

I really dislike that concept.

It's not intolerant to not allow intolerance.

Just like it's not unfree to not allow people the "freedom" to murder others.

It's not a complicated idea. Stop trying to make it seem it is by calling it a "paradox".

December 8. Somehow, some way, it will be over by December 8.

Meanwhile, hold on for the bumpy ride.

Oh by the way - No issues reported at the state level.

Oh, almost forgot to add, and this is for @GasBandit - Jorgenson/Cohen have received 1.53% of the vote in Maricopa County so far. That happens to be about a half-percentage point better than the total number of Not Qualified, Overvote and Undervote totals in the county as of today.

This is so absurd that it almost belongs in the funny politics thread. But if they actually managed to tamp down the white supremacy, it would probably work.

It's premise is just stupid, because "total" tolerance would also require tolerating murder.
This is a false equivalency. You are either conflating "tolerance" with "anarchy," or you are assuming that it is impossible for the first to exist without creating the second as a consequence.

There is a billboard I see on the way home from work. It reads PEACE OFFICERS across the top over a picture of a dozen-plus people in police uniforms, and something like "part of your community" across the bottom.

Only two of them are PoC, and they're both standing at the farthest right of the pic. I facepalm every time I see it.

If there is one thing I see Republican syncophants saying a lot, it's that there was no racial tension in this country until Obama became president. It never once occurs to them that maybe it wasn't Obama stoking it, but maybe all the racists coming out of the woodwork to protest the very idea of a black man in power. (Also that is was, in fact, already there, they were just able to pretend it wasn't while patting themselves on the back)

GWB introduced a lot of racist stuff. heck, so did Bill Clinton. Mmmaybe Carter wasn't racist - though by today's standards, even his policies probably favored white over colored. The idea that there's no racial tension in the US berfore Obama is ludicrous. Did MLK give his speech in 2008? I think not.

Suburbs are full of people who maybe have one black person/family in their lives, and since they are nice to them, they think racism is solved.

Guess we'll add racism to the list of Solved Problems, along with sexism, covid, antisemitism, poverty, hunger, socialism, and the Riemann hypothesis.

So you agree that the "paradox" is nonsensical...

I am completely at a loss as to how you could possibly take my comment as supporting your claim. Unless...
When I said "you" in that sentence, I meant what you, @@Li3n , are doing, and not the generic "you" that implies "anyone" and refers to an indeterminate listener. YOU are the one doing the conflating/assuming.
This is weird.
Do you think they merged with DHS?

Renamed and rebranded as the Freedom Army, protecting the States from unrest.

But the assumption is supposed to be mistaken, as an example of why the idea doesn't work.

If tolerance isn't anarchy, you're implying there are rules for tolerance, and you don't just have to tolerate "anything" for it to count, and thus there's no paradox. (i do disagree with your apparent definition of anarchy though. Not having any leaders isn't the same as not having any rules, but that's a whole other discussion)
