Halforum Minecraft Server

I was even thinking after a month, or whatever time period we decide on, I could even put in a command block to teleport between spawn points instead of going through the nether.
I'm against anything other than a clean break. It's unfortunate for people who have stuff "on the go" right now, but it's how I feel.
Pros of "new spawn point:" Older areas are accessible (if inconvenient).
Cons of "new spawn point:" Generating maps becomes a huuuuuuuuge issue.
I'm ok either way (though I'm slightly in favor of fresh start due to B), but would like a clear date for the transition (not just "when 1.8 comes out").

How about moving the spawn point far away. That would give people who start new a chance to do so. Destroy your bed and die. We could connect it through the nether eventually.
Nether chests would still allow users to bootstrap themselves in this situation.

I'm frankly worried about the "Feel" of it. I hope that you set the spawn point far enough away that we can NOT get back (for all practical purposes, even the Nether) except through cheats. That it feels 100% fresh and that any "tearing" through new vs old terrain is not an issue. Even then, I'd rather it be a new world, with the "old world" being on another server. Then it's more of a clean break. When we did "Caprica" back in the day, in a way it was good to NOT have "Ragnar" there. That we could add it back eventually via multiverse was good, but that did not happen right away. It was after quite a bit of time, and that was good IMO. Because of the new version, we HAD to do the clean break. Now re-setting spawn point may offer a similar benefit with single-server, but as was said, we may run into mapping problems, and IMO that's one of the best parts of seeing worlds evolve, in that we see how far people have gone, and how the "shape" evolves over time.

It's not a "dealbreaker" (I don't think I used that word) but my feeling is definitely one way rather than the other.

Nobody specifically used that word, it was just my way of describing it. Dave was also a hardliner in this regard.

Setting a pretty hard line there.
I'm not going to say "It's OK, but I'd rather blah." I'm saying quite clearly: I want a clean break. I'm against (and will argue against) any other alternatives (unless something is presented I didn't expect and can support). But I'll play whatever happens. I'm not going to attempt to take my ball and go home or anything (not that I could anyways!). I'm just very against anything that keeps the old world "accessible" from the same characters while the new one is around. I kind of like seeing the new achievements pop up and such. Yes my old home will be "gone", but I'm OK with that.

Hey, we're allowed to have strong feelings about trivial things! But in the end I know it's trivial, and will move on.

If I did it, it would be well out of range of a normal nether rail. I don't know how that would affect map size, since the space in between would be empty.

I may play with command blocks a bit and see what I can do. I think I can have them strip a players inventory and teleport them. I know ender chests will still work once you can make one, but starting over isn't mandatory, so if you don't want to start over why do it?

Actually, how far away is the release of 1.8 anyway? I wouldn't be against a backup-then-map wipe if I could finish what I'm working on. Right now I'm hoping to finish within two or three months.

Nobody knows except mojang (if even them). I did some searching today and couldn't find anything but speculation. People already thought that it was going to be in June, but obviously didn't happen. It's all wild guessing from what I can tell.

From Mojang.com

" With some luck, this week may be the last week of 1.8 snapshots! We’re hoping to do a pre-release this Thursday if there are no major issues remaining in the snapshots by then. "

Unless you specifically tell mapping software to do so, it will generally try to map the entire extant world. This means you would have two dots separated by miles and miles of empty space, but the mapping software would probably still faithfully try to render all of that empty space, just for context. That means potential hours of rendering time spent just going, "Map this? Nope. Here? Nope. Here? Nope," when generating a map.

That isn't a huge deal for me. Just worried about actual map size.

In theory, it shouldn't take up more server space than two separate maps together (two servers running on different ports, for example) would take up. The way the chunk data is recorded, map chunks don't actually exist until they're generated by someone coming within render range of them, and thus it doesn't increase the size of your level data.

But all it takes is ONE JAY...

Yes, it's only the rendered maps that would be affected, not the chunks making up the play area, so what Gas says is true. The only way that the play map would start to get messed up would be if someone decided to, say, try and walk the entire overland distance between the old/new areas.

Yeah, you expressed pretty strong sentiment about such things the last time we went through this (which became the Ragnar-Caprica transition).
Meh. I was wrong. I found out I like mining and exploring more than building major edifices.

I just heard about http://www.learntomod.com for making Minecraft mods. It looks like it could be a pretty neat tool for getting kids interested in programming. You can use blockly to do the coding, so it should be pretty easy for younger kids to pick up.

I'm thinking about picking it up for our 9 year old and see if it's something she would be in to.
