[Movies] MCU: Phase 5 - To Kang or Not to Kang

This wasn't even fun to angry-watch, and I'm quickly approaching the point where I'm going to write the MCU off entirely. They've totally lost track of what made the movies fun to begin with.
The MCU's early strength was its inventiveness and ingenuity. They took these different genres and showed audiences what adding superheroes could do. Ant-Man was a heist film... with superheroes. Captain America was a period World War II movie... with superheroes. You get the idea. There was also the thrill of discovery. New characters were introduced with cameos and we got to look forward to seeing them again in a year or so.

Now it seems like the MCU is on a treadmill. There is no anticipation anymore because we know another movie or Disney+ series is right around the corner. The films aren't BAD. They're certainly miles ahead of most DC movies. But they lack the spark that made the MCU such a novelty.

Nah, some of the recent ones are absolutely bad. Bad scripts, bad direction, incoherent decisions. Shang Chi is an example of what you’re talking about - a movie that followed their formula to a fault and did what they’ve always done. This Captain America movie and Eternals before it are just ugly messes that don’t warrant the time they take to watch.

For what it's worth, I've been enjoying the recent Daredevil revival. It's willingness to spend a lot of time on Matt Murdock when he's NOT out being the shit out of people is refreshing.

Daredevil: Born Again season 1 concluded and here are my quick thoughts. Overall a very good series. The season finale feels incomplete but it opens the series to what I hope will be a very strong 2nd season. Punisher finally gets a little attention in the finale and it’s great to see that actor return to the role. Daredevil does make an odd choice in the previous episode that feels unexplored in the finale, and quite possibly just makes things worse for everyone.

A personal issue for me is my inability to disconnect this from the MCU since it’s been confirmed as part of it. A lot of crap is going down and it feels like somehow Daredevil is the only one really involved.

The Avengers are "gone", SHIELD's been out of action for years and only deals with national security issues, and SWORD is busy dealing with fucking aliens, so who would actually be involved in dealing with this? I guess we could get The Defenders back up but we'll see if that actually happens.

A friendly neighborhood someone for one.

Blame Sony for that one. They've been dragging their feet getting a new Spider-man movie out because they wanted to waste all that fucking money on Kraven and Madam Web, I guess.

They also seem to want Spider-man to waste away in production purgatory, because newer execs in charge seem to think working with Marvel was a mistake. Better to own 100% of a grape rather than 50% of a watermelon, apparently.

To be fair, it’s just a consistent plot hole that you will see in any superhero film that has a larger connected universe. Where is everybody else during these major crisis moments? Sure you might be able to explain away a few heroes but you can’t explain away everyone.

Daredevil spoilers ahead so

I don't mind a balance of head thumping and lawyering, but there was too much time wasted on hanging up the horns. I personally have seen one too many hanging up the cape story lines.

The worst part? The big ass action scene is in the fucking dark!? I hate that shit. Only DD can fight with the lights off right?

I did enjoy it for the most part. I liked all the peripheral characters. I wanted to see the Night Nurse. I hope they somehow get Jessica Jones and Luke Cage to show up, which isn't likely.

I finished the season so at least there's that. I have quit most of the post Endgame stuff.

Season 2 better have a bit more head thumping. More cool superhero shit too. Swinging around with the billy clubs. Kicking ass.

One last complaint, why was the Muse such a tough bastard? DD should have conked him on the head and turned him in. Weak villain. His fight with Bullseye was way way better.

Looks like Thunderbolts* is really good. Just saw a review by people who are usually very critical of Marvel movies of late and they really like it.

So I got to see the premiere of Thunderbolts* on Monday and yes it is indeed the best Marvel Movie in a while. Good story, fun action... if you follow the movies/shows you will know who everyone is but if you don't the movie will fill you in. It is well written, well acted, fun and delightful in unexpected ways. The themes it explores are timely and important and I highly recommend it.

Just got back from seeing it. It’s absolutely worth it to see this in theaters. I don’t think I was disappointed at all.

Totally random thought, but I was thinking about Captain America: Brave New World. I've been rewatching Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes and the Serpent Society show up a few times. You know, the snake-themed terrorist group with an assortment of snake-themed powers.

Well, they were briefly in Captain America: BNW, too...as a generic black ops terrorist group with no powers. It boggles my mind that they fucked up such an interesting group and made them so boring. Hell, you could hire a contortionist, dress her up in a snake getup, and wrap herself around Sam in a fight. That'd be kinda interesting and creepy, and still keep within their attempt at grounded superheroes.

They also wasted Giancarlo Esposito to the point that I'm fully expecting them to do something else with the character in the future just because of how bad/underutilized he was.

I'm pretty sure he was added to the movie entirely in reshoots.

Thunderbolts* was fantastic. Well worth it, and easily the best Marvel movie of the last 5 years. I would put it in my personal top 5 MCU ranking, though my daughter thought it was more “good but not great.”

Disney is rebranding all the promotional material for Thunderbolts* to the “actual” title. Two thoughts.

1) I feel that doing this so early after the release is just hurting the surprise for anyone who can avoid spoilers until they see the film. At least wait a few weeks.

2) The movie should never be rebranded anyway. That’s the whole point of a good portion of dialogue in the film and that asterisk in the title. The reveal of the true name comes at the very end as a surprise for both audience and characters and it’s a fun reveal.

The only time retitling the movie after its release should have been John Carter. I will defend this hill to my dying age, but it wouldn't have bombed if it was called "John Carter of Mars."

It's still in theaters! I haven't seen it yet and was contemplating actually doing so! I hadn't even been spoiled yet on this bit!
